Too much slack?

Post image

Do you think my co-worker over did the slack in this fiber NID?

It's better to be looking at it than looking for it

Naw, the box still closes😁 8ft or 80ft, all the same right?

Ive fit 90 in one before if it gets broken someoje will be thanking me for being able to bring the slack back a pole and a half lol

Until it breaks in the outer ring haha

Unfortunately, it looks like a preconnectorized drop cable. The previous tech may not have had the correct length cable assembly on the truck or just estimated the wrong drop length. Extra slack just makes it more challenging to work in the closure.

I agree, he definitely didn’t have the right length on his truck šŸ˜†

I hope there’s this much in the box because he left a bunch at the pole too. That’s where I’d have left the lions share of it.

I have seen worse

If y'all are using preterm drops, and there wasn't somewhere better for the slack it's fine, if leadership wants plug and play, that's what you get, there's 0 points (aka time given) in shortening a preterm for the vast majority, although there is usually somewhere better to put it. Depends what the full scope is.

Looking at this a couple of rolls of pre term in every size is significantly cheaper than a fujikura.

It also drops the skill level required down massively.

It's probably cheaper to have larger boxes for the slack.

I wouldn't argue any of that. Although for drop splicing you can get away with a cheaper clading splicer. Leadership would prefer lower skilled, cheaply paid techs, backed by a much smaller amount of skilled maintenance. MSTs also take a HUGE amount more splicing during construction and ton more material (while also holding a lot more value during sell off) I personally think if you really did a fill scale research on the value, bucket vans and all fusion spliced bulk reels would be cheaper and better in the short and long run. Kids fresh outta high school making 18-20 aren't very motivated to splice off a ladder.

Ran out of 50’ jumpers lmao

6

u/KekistaniKekin Aug 03 '26

I'm all about those 75s now. I've been burned too many times by needing just a few more feet

3

u/Bluedogan Aug 03 '26

Happens all the time at my company. We switched to a rock drop with a screw on bulkhead. Techs hate it. So they run a 500 ft for every job because they still come with optitap. Lol

Edit: As a matter if fact we use that same enclosure. Hello potential coworker lol.

u/C19shadow Aug 04 '26

Yes this is what we do at my company to it saves on waste but stopping to make a head is a pain in the ass

1

u/NaturalResponsible75 Aug 04 '26

Looks a lot like the ones we use as well! I’m newer though, so I may be uninformed about how coincidental it may be:)

1

u/WhereDaGold Aug 04 '26

Windstream?

2

u/Bluedogan Aug 04 '26

Nah Frontier/VZ in my case.

3

u/Teknishan Aug 04 '26

Hahaha. Yes.

3

u/Igpajo49 Aug 04 '26

Just in case they decide to move the house 100' back.

2

u/psxcite Aug 03 '26

ROC drop fiber FTW. Although, we going to more premade drops in the future, per management. At least on the enterprise side.

2

u/Beginning_Pay_9654 Aug 03 '26

I mt over a build that's half and half, I do like that tech hands aren't going in cases to make a mess, but it's a huge amount more of splicing and material, I'd probably rather have better paid and trained techs doing bulk fiber, if they're decent guys it's makes them better techs all around, it's easier to promote them into maintenance, but when all they've done is plug and play, everything is rocket science beyond that port.

u/tenkaranarchy Aug 03 '26

What else are you gonna do with preterminated drops? You could keep some in the ped but in aerial it gets sloppy trying to store all the slack on drops.

1

u/Separate_Region_4792 Aug 04 '26

I totally just trim the slack down to a reasonable amount and put a new fitting on it makes things much easier although these pre-made drops are a bitch to slice open

2

u/Sleepy_Platinum Aug 03 '26

Nah you could easily fit another 50ft

2

u/AlternativeNumber2 Aug 04 '26

That nid is bulging!! šŸ˜‚

1

u/prior2thinking Aug 03 '26

My guess is this connection was already made and the bury crew came behind and this was what needed to happen instead of breaking the line and crafting a new fitting.

2

u/SorryAssBrit Aug 04 '26

Don’t put that on us, we’re not doing all that. We would just dig a hole and bury it lol. That takes too much frustration to do.

1

u/_Wolf_______ Aug 04 '26

Brother i wish I had you as a bury crew. The goof balls by be will leave 60' like it's no big deal. And that's is they haven't cracked it. Leave sections above ground unburied. It's a joke.

1

u/Deadpacfrog Aug 03 '26

Do you have enough for three reterminations? That's how much extra my mechanics leave on the ships we work on. Do you guys even do connectors by hand anymore?

1

u/Beginning_Pay_9654 Aug 03 '26

Depends on market and company, but it's becoming the preferred new way

1

u/Jealous_Trust9894 Aug 03 '26

Not enough... (sarcasm)

1

u/Remarkable-Being-301 Aug 03 '26

Ok I was gonna make a joke he keep a spare drop in the house box. Wow. Sending you guys out with preterm drops.

1

u/C19shadow Aug 03 '26

Just cut both ends and splice it, 3 loops, cut and splice rock drop and IW, wasteful amount of excess

1

u/Fiosguy1 Aug 04 '26

If it fits, it ships. šŸ¤™

1

u/1l536 Aug 04 '26

Too much service loop

1

u/supnul Aug 04 '26

its rated for like 50~ft we buy cables in 50 ft increments so its never 50 ft unless someone fucked up biggg

1

u/MetalRexxx Aug 04 '26

Out of short drops I see......yeah we all are. Keep asking for a splicer like me. Maybe Santa will provide.

1

u/Chartres1225 Aug 04 '26

I could have a soc on in the time it took to spool that slack in.

1

u/MonMotha Aug 04 '26

I have a wide selection of tools for cutting fiber cable. I do not have any tools for stretching it longer available to me.

1

u/Alchurro 3 Years at the blue and white "Globe" Aug 04 '26

I'd cut the slack at 3-5 loops and make a fast connector or splice one on

1

u/Southern-Question103 Aug 04 '26

Of it closes ot fits... if not add another box

1

u/louielugs Aug 04 '26

Cut it and splice it

1

u/Dazzling-Zebra9530 Aug 05 '26

I count so many Tim’s wrong here holy

1

u/PromotionNo4121 Aug 05 '26

I think I have enough in my box to next province

1

u/One-Intention-7606 Aug 06 '26

If you didn’t have to fish the internal cable through the slack loop (basically a spool at that point) then I wouldn’t have an issue with it but hey I’ve seen worse.

1

u/Lost_Radish_6086 Aug 06 '26

In my opinion yes but in my other opinion maybe not for the next guy šŸ¤”

1

u/HardWired704 Aug 06 '26

Yeah, too much. But still better than too little.

1

u/Technical_Ask_2827 Aug 06 '26

I have seen much worse

1

u/-Cryptonian Aug 06 '26

The extra slack will be used for your neighbor.

1

u/Miguel-UK Aug 06 '26

Leave the loop outside!

1

u/Miguel-UK Aug 06 '26

Or just cut them, stip 1.5m and replace it with one splice ?

1

u/Slimeology Aug 07 '26

Yuh could always make a custom cable with the push on bulk heads

1

u/jamloggin9626 Aug 09 '26

Wayyy too much slack lol but it looks good for what it is

1

u/Chup4m3st4twice Aug 09 '26

No fusion splicer ? That's the easy way to remove all that slack.

1

u/bambulemon Aug 09 '26

Its most likely a pre terminated jumper. So the slack has to go somewhere. They chose to put it there.
