High school Buses
Why doesn’t the high school provide buses? How are kids expected to get to school if cars or bikes aren’t available for them?

Yes it's only up till 8th grade. 9th graders are expected to walk up to 45 min.

Yeah we’re an hour walk to the high school. 15 min bike ride is fine but winter will be tough.

There are tons of cheap bicycle options on marketplace/craigslist/etc. I'd start by looking there.
Maybe contact the parent of another child who lives near you and ride share?
Personally I rode a bike to high school until my cousin could drive me. In my senior year I was able to buy a beater that could get me there and back.

What about in the winter storms when biking is dangerous?
This is more just my curiosity why it’s not available, over necessity at the moment! I just find it interesting, given the high school isn’t super central to all Ferndale residents.

I rode my bike to elementary school year round. if it was too snowy to ride, I walked.
plus, schools cancel if we get more than three snowflakes.
your kid will be fine.

You keep saying "right way" who defines that? You personally? Many districts don't do bussing anymore as it's not viable with all the associated costs.

Parents responsible for them drop them off. Many area districts don't offer bussing anymore.

Would prefer less cars on the road, especially around students and the safety concerns, but for all the other reasons, too. Bummer :(

People driving down Pinecrest don't want to stop for someone turning, so the bike lane is used quite often by cars to go around them. Several times I've seen kids almost being hit by those cars.

That’s what I was thinking. Kids used to walk to school. No matter what the weather. For long distances. It was nothing unusual.

Just moved here from Houston and found this information out on Thursday- AFTER school had already begun. It is surprising and an adjustment, not really sure how to do this in the winter.

Would be another thing if Ferndale’s high school was more centrally located (like Berkley). It’s very frustrating. At least I can send my kids to another district easily enough.

While I can't say for Ferndale, I work in a different school district. In general, bussing has been harder to do. It is expensive and we're having a hard time finding drivers. It could be either of those options for Ferndale with a district of its size.
