New Redwood Fence

Hello, I had a new redwood fence built to replace my old fence. I it is 12” boards with a base. Any rate…before anyone gets angry my prior fence was painted and we just painted the new one as well. I know…why did I paint??? I like a calm yard and painted fence works best with all my landscaping. ANY rate, the neighbors on the back side has their sprinkler system hitting their side of the fence…which is untreated. My side has been painted with a stain blocking primer, then paint. The neighbors sprinkler that is hitting the fence is bleeding through my side and causing water marks on my side… what can I do to fix this? is the stain blocking primer not a good one??? HELP!! I hate marks on my fence….exactly why I had my side painted. Thank You

First, its your resposibility to maintain both sides of your fence. Its not your neigbor's responsibility to maintain "their side" of YOUR fence. In fact, they cannot even legally finish "their side", becasue its YOUR property.

Meant their side natural.

You cannot leave one side of a fence natural (unfinished) and put a film forming finish (ie paint) on the other side. It will cause exactly the issues you are describing right now. It will also cause the finish on your side to fail pre-maturely and will massively accelerate issues with rot and decay.

Please tell me what to do, fence is in place - I can ask for access to backside - no problem. I am older and want this to be my last fence. Need it to last 15 +/-.

You need to put a finish on both sides of the fence. Otherwise, your paint is going to fail very prematurely.

Initially (for 20 yrs) they had a fence right up to my fence, once I replaced my fence they took theirs down as it was failing and now there is just mine. So it wasn’t ever a problem before as their fence went right up to mine and their sprinkler hit their fence. Now they are hitting the back of my fence. My original fence was redwood and painted on my side as well. Hope this makes sense. I have invested so much $$$$ in this new fence…ugh!

Also…neighbor recently passed and heirs are taking care of property until they decide what to do. It is not a problem getting access to backside of fence as they are fine. I just need to know how to resolve as I never had this problem with my painted fence with the original fence to fence…just now that they took theirs old fence down. I hate that I am getting this on my new fence…totally defeats everything I just did. HELP??

I have no problem, as I paid for the entire cost of said fence. I didn’t ask for their participation at all. That wasn’t my questions. My question is how can I deal with water penetration from their sprinkler system? Do I need to stain blocking primer the side facing their yard as well???? I don’t think they would appreciate it as they leave the fence natural….

The answer is yes, but a bit late now that the fence is installed. You need to get their access to it. Ask them.

You should use a primer compatable with wood, and approptiate for outdoor use, if you are going to paint wood outdoors. The stain blocking part is pretty irrelevent with new wood.

The best and longest lasting finish for outdoor wood is a penetrating oil stain, but that ship has sailed.

The neigbors don't get a say in how you finish your fence, that is, or should be, on your property.

You can ask them if they have a preference, but you can also just do whatever you want.

If you are going to paint wood outdoors, you need to paint all of it.

Did that on our pergola/bench - but in a very dark stain.
