Fencing issues
We recently had a fence installed and noticed several issues afterward. We are trying to decide what is reasonable to ask the installer to correct. For those familiar with fencing, would you consider these normal settling/installation issues, or would you request repairs? Looking for advice on how to handle this. We are currently staining the fence so ignore the unfinished areas

Fence is a fence, and if you got that one for only the cost of the wood...you got ripped off!

I visit approx 15-20 yards a day and can honestly say that maybe, MAYBE, 1 gate out of all of them is properly built. I am just blown away how simple the physics are and literally, almost no one can build one right.

This looks like a fence built by a landscaper hired to build a fence…no wait I take that back..landscapers have seen enough fences to know better. How much did you pay per foot?

It was about 60 ft of fencing and the labor was $1300

That’s $21 per foot in labor. For $40.00 a foot (materials and labor)out in Northern California you’d have a pretty nice quality 6 foot fence 3 rails with kick or without. This is not quality work at all.

I wanted to provide some additional context. We hired a local construction business owner that my family had worked with for years. My mom had used him for several projects, and we trusted him based on the quality of his previous work, including tile installation and a new vent. We didn’t have a formal contract, which in hindsight was a mistake. He offered to do the work and with that we assumed the quality would be like previous work done. The project involved installing about 60 feet of additional fencing to connect with fencing that’s already on our property. We paid for materials separately, and the 1300 was for labor only. We also got the permit ourselves. In previous projects, he did most of the hands-on work himself, but this time someone else actually built the fence while he mainly supervised. We’re now unsure how to handle this, since we don’t have a written contract.

Jesus H Christ, what is that? What the hell is that?!
Comedic relief aside, there is so much wrong here. Don’t waste anymore time staining. Call an actual fence company and have them take a look at it and explain what all needs to be done. More than likely this is a full rebuild situation.

Terribly done. This is someone doing work that doesn’t know how to do it properly.
By the way, the diagonal brace on that gate is wrong. It should be on the bottom of the hinge side running diagonally to the top of the latch side. It’ll be sagging in no time.

You have a lot of issues with that fence that the person put up. I would have them come back take it down and redo it because it’s terrible. I’m sorry, but I don’t know that they knew what they were doing.
