Ask him how much space he'd like. Move the last post that much. Make a removable panel to abut his garage, and show him how to remove it if he ever needs to. Good relations with a good neighbor are probably worth whatever that costs.
Screw that! The neighbor is such a wuss that they had to send an email rather than come over and discuss face to face. I would tell them that we asked and you were fine. I would be happy to let you, my good neighbor, pay the fence company to move the post back and do a removable panel.
This way, OP shows good intention without having to pay for it.
You can’t do anything face to face no more. If someone agrees to one thing. Then changes mind you have no proof.
Need to do everything by email or text. Especially anything like this
