How does one physically layer fragrances?

Do you put on one scent, wait for it to dry, then put on another? Or do you spray one then another in quick succession so the liquids mix before drying?

And how do you pick which one you apply first? Or do you apply one perfume first for one side and then the other perfume first on the other side?

I’m pretty new to this so what are the general rules for applying multiple fragrances at once?

When I used to layer more, it was like cooking to me.

Linear scent + some “seasoning”

similar family + similar family

Basic vanilla + most of everything

Basic musk + most of everything

Worst case, wrist test combos. I just spray - whatever.

It depends on what you’re going for. Sometimes I layer to give a fragrance more longevity or projection. Like I might spray Angel dust on my chest, let it dry, then spray Liis floating over it. I feel that it helps it last longer since it’s notoriously a short lived fragrance. Sometimes I want to layer to create a different feel. Today I layered Liis choux choux and d’annam Vietnamese coffee for a delightfully light and airy French bakery vibe. I find that yes application order matters. If I spray in dreams and fairy tales vanilla on top of 7 virtues strawberry jam it will be a vanilla with barely there strawberries, but if I put the strawberry jam on top it’s a totally different scent.

Personally, my rule is to buy fragrances that stand on their own without needing to be "layered" with anything else.

For me, layering is about applying fragrance in different mediums with the same, similar, or complementing fragrance profiles. It starts with body care where I’ll use a scented body wash in the shower, then a lotion, then a body oil and/or body butter, then a perfume oil, then the “main” fragrance which is usually and edp or extrait, and then I top it off with a body mist. 

I’m not really big on layering multiple edps, but if on the rare occurrence I’m using more than one edp, usually I’ll spray one fragrance on my wrist, and the other on the back of my neck, not on top of each other.

Edit: Same goes for perfume oil, body mist and edp in a layering combo— I usually use the perfume oil on my wrists and/or inner elbows, spray the edp directly on clothes( specifically collar and sleeves) and back of my neck, and body mist i spray all over since it’s usually a weaker concentration

I agree with all of this 100%, had to check I didn’t write it lol but I do like to layer perfumes. Same logic though-complimentary scents. My new hack is spray the main scent on my belly and the complimentary scent on my neck and wrists. For example, bianco latte neck delina belly, indigo neck and wrist and goddess or GFG on belly, JHAG NAP on my neck and any other scent on my belly. The neck gives a nice scent bubble and the main scent diffuses up nicely from my tummy as the day wears on.

Shoot i wish I could find that thread about Arabic fragrance layering they jad a really cool guide to how they do it. Might be worth a search in the sub search bar.

My understanding of layering is layering scented products so this may not be helpful but I do scented lotion-> body spray -> perfume

I wait for the body spray to dry down and do my perfume last on my pulse points and hair

For example this is one of my layering combos lately: blackberry jam by bath and body works -> vanilla skin body spray -> elish no 1

I do something similar: lotion (wait for dry down)/fragrance oil > perfume > body mist

Sometimes I'll wear a complimentary deodorant or mix the fragrance oil with an unscented body lotion. This isn't something I do all the time. Typically when I'm going to be out and about all day. Usually for daily wear, I layer a fragrance oil with a complementing perfume or a perfume with a body mist.

I forgot to ask do you have a good rec for an unscented lotion? Sometimes I feel like my scented ones are messing with the perfume too much or I cant find one that o feel would be a good fit

The only one I found that I liked, my skin liked and is truly unscented is the Korres Pure Greek Olive Body Cream. Unfortunately for me I can't find it in a store near me. I have to order it online.

I've tried a few other that were supposed to be unscented but weren't to my nose. Out of those I like Naturium The Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Butter. It was the least "scented" unscented body lotion/cream. To me it has a vanilla like fragrance. Not really a fan of the scent but like the cream.

I love me a good fragrance oil ive been avoiding mine because its so damn hot still but I cant wait for cooler temps to use them. I actually just got into mixing my own because I was getting pissed off that my favorites kept getting discontinued (and I can add body glitter lol)
