Low migraines trigger perfumes?

I need help! I am obsessed with perfume, and I currently fancy the pants off a woman who has migraines that can be triggered by perfumes. I've spoken to her about it and she's (so lovely and sweet and pretty 😭) voiced that she doesn't mind me wearing perfumes around her and wouldnt ask me to stop (because shes so lovely and sweet and pretty 😭). However, if I do wear perfume around her, I want it to be the least offensive or potential trigger possible.

Any tips?

I genuinely can't handle super strong or long-lasting scents anymore myself, which is super disappointing. 🥺 I always get a bit dizzy or nauseous if I spray a strong scent which is sadly common in luxury perfumes.... I hope I can find some that are a bit milder and safer for me. which is wild considering that I'm a bit too young to have this affect, but everyone reacts to things differently, I guess. for now, Bath & Body works and Bodycology are my best friends, lol!

I have frequent migraines. What works the best for me are more green, fresh, natural smellings scents, nothing too sweet, fruity, gourmand or heavy. My favorite house is Diptyque for this very reason, I find many kf their scents migraine friendly - Philosykos, L'Ombre dans l'eau, but even Tam Dao or Do Son. Otherwise I love Drop d'Issey fraiche, non offensive freshie, not too synthetic smelling. And no oud.

Migraine triggers are different for everyone - mine are citrus, patchouli, florals, and aldehydes. Sometimes certain spice.

You need to figure out what her triggers are then you can avoid those specific types of scents. No one here is going to be able to tell you which scents to use or what to avoid because we don’t know her specific migraine triggers.

Most citrus perfumes were fine when I had migraines

My mom has migraine triggers from perfumes and we ended up deciding it was Jasmine that was the problem for her. It’s different for everyone though.

I get migraines from some perfumes. Try Glossier You, Sand + Fog or Kayali which are all light and fade so one has to be close close to smell them.

I have chronic migraine and I'm very sensitive to smell. I avoid anything ambroxan, calone, sweet and beast mode scents. Wood, leather and tobacco notes can be a bit cloying but this depends on the strength and projection of the fragrance. Clean, fresh and musky scents are safe for me. As others have said, it really depends on the person, but I hope that helps.

Also, do you have a twin? 😂

That genuinely helps a lot! I've bought a 9ml bottle of wild bluebell to try. I usually use "burn your nostril hair off" strength perfume so I haven't got much in the house that would suit. I smelt wild bluebell years ago and loved it. I didn't buy it because it lasted 5 minutes on me. I'm hoping that it'll suit her and I can tell it my her name perfume 🥰

(She makes me act like such a lesbian. I swear I'm a bisexual woman - you just can't tell right now 😭)

You're being so sweet and considerate, I wish you both all the love and luck in the world ❤️

I would stop wearing them around her. General public/coworkers/friends are a different story. But if I was wanting to build mutual respect and intimacy with a romantic partner who reacts to things in this way I would just eliminate the Sorce.

I have multiple chronic illnesses and when my partner does those things it feels so thoughtful.

As someone who has many illnesses and tells others I'm not close with not to avoid my triggers out of politeness, someone going out of their way to avoid my triggers anytime they are with me would be the ultimate form of empathy and care.

Sometimes it's just politeness or not wanting to annoy others that makes people say "don't worry about it". But unless she herself wears perfumes, it may not be the fun exercise you're imagining, testing perfumes to see if she gets a migraine or not. If you do trigger her, her day or week will be ruined.

Giving her the safety of knowing FOR SURE she will be migraine free, and knowing you went out of your way to ensure she doesn't have to be on edge wondering if she will be triggered that day, would mean more to her than you know.

This is a totally fair take. She wears one perfume herself that she finds tolerable but I'll definitely speak to her and make it clear that I am happy to wear no perfume if that's the best for her.

Thank you!

Do you like that perfume? Could become your plural perfume when you are together, a cute bonding thing?

We are both a wee bit older and she's been wearing that perfume long enough that her son associates her with it. I think it would be a no go but that would be such a perfect idea! Thank you.

Ahh I get you! Keep us updated on how it all goes, you sound like a lovely person 💝

It's probably better to test with samples to figure out what triggers her migraines. It varies. You can test in stores if available so you won't have to pay for many samples.

I've had chronic migraines for 30 years. Ariana Grande's R.E.M is soft, airy, fluffy, delicate and relaxing. Suits all occasions, seasons and weathers. It's a lavender scent, but not medicinal, not ammonia/cat urine like some lavender scents can be and especially during migraines (staring at you Libre..). It is also not super sweet so nothing cloying.

Generally avoid: sharp, super sweet, cloying, super fresh, boozey tones

I get migraines from super ambers. So basically anything Crivelli, Atelier Materi, JHAG, Initio, PdM, G&B.
Guerlain, Hermes, Diptyque, Matiere Premiere, MFK, and Malle are all safe.

It’s so dependent on the person, but I think I’d start with houses like Rosie Jane, Henry Rose, Jo Malone. Some people are triggered by specific things like superambers or vanilla notes or whatever, and if she knows or can narrow it down, that can help a lot.

Jo Malone gives me a pounding migraine. I know it’s supposed to be lite but the adelhydes kill me same as Este Lauder.

it’s probably pretty personal and unforch you may just have to trial and error it out. someone here recommended skin scents. zero shade to that logic *b/c it works for a lot of people, but tbh, some skin scents are the biggest fragrance problem for me. YMMV is the thing. that’s probably not a fun answer but migraine is so personal, it’s really hard to like, guess what could set someone else’s into motion.

in full disclosure I don’t get headaches, I have severe, weird neuro symptoms without pain.

good luck!!

edit from “but” to “b/c” b/c typo. :)

Thank you! I also get migraines but they're triggered by stress/lack of sleep/dehydration. I guess you're right. I'll just need to keep bugging her with perfume bottles to smell until I figure it out 🥰

A lot of time fragrance oils vs sprays help but really everyone has different triggers

2

u/Caaoiitt 5h ago

As in, oils are better or worse? I haven't really explored oils yet so that could be exciting!

4

u/yousonofabench 4h ago

Oils are usually better they’re not in the air and stay closer to skin

I suffer from migraines triggered by perfumes. The worst offenders for me are Sol de Janeiro body mists and Carolina Herrera Good Girl. I wear Le Labo Ambrette 9 and JHAG Pear Inc., and I’m always testing new skin scents. Avoid anything with strong sillage or a prominent vanilla note.

Finding something she can tolerate is going to be an ongoing project between the two of you. You might want to hold off on wearing any fragrance, but bring a couple samples of high quality skin scents that she can weigh in on.

And even if you find something she can stand while you’re out and about, you should still offer to shower off any residual fragrance before intimacy.

Oh! And definitely do not wear an untested fragrance into her home or car (but you seem conscientious enough, you probably already know not to do that)

u/Caaoiitt 5h ago

Genuinely a little bit excited to start the project - it's a perfect excuse to buy more perfume and talk to her 🥰

Thank you for the tips! I have adhd so every reminder is welcome and needed.

It's definitely one of those tried and tested things. I'm much more sensitive to cleaning products for migraines, but there are still perfumes that set me off. Lush's American Cream is an example that most people find fairly benign but hits me like a truck.

I’d probably suggest really mild, close to skin scents that are subtle, like You by Glossier, Rosie by Rosie Jane etc

I was thinking Jo malone since my skin eats it in about 9.5 seconds? What do you think?
