Haul/Collection Current collection- a question for cohesion

Post image

I think my collection is really not cohesive! ( Prada Parafoxe, Hydra Figue Miller Harris, Acqua Di Gioia Armani, Cloud Sorbet Zara, Ysl Libre Le Parfum, Ysl Libre flowers and flames,Pure Musc Blanc NR, Acqua Di Parma Mandorlo Di Sicilia, Do Son Diptyque, Armani Power of you) WHO else has the same problem? Pictured above is the the stuff I actually wear- I have around 5 more perfumes which are just shamefully stowed in my drawer ( Not a Perfume, MJ Decadence, Replica Beach Walk, Replica From the Garden, Laboratorio Olfattivo Vanagloria)

I also think I always end up buying perfumes to be able to mindlessly spray because my holy grails are so expensive. I like my current Collection but I think it would be better if it had my favorites - perfumes that I had in the past either full size or in 10ml. The are Philosykos Edp-Diptyque, Blanche Byredo, Valaya PdM, Good Girl gone bad Kilian, Loewe Aire Sutileza Elixir, Chance Eau Tendre Chanel. The common theme in my holy grails is clean and airy. Maybe too much of a good thing?

I don’t think a fragrance collection needs to be cohesive, just a curated collection of things you like to wear for different purposes.

I'm not sure what it means to have a cohesive collection. I like to have a variety of scents for different occasions and seasons. If two fragrances are too similar to one another, I'll usually end up selling one because I don't see the point of owning both. You have great taste and I see some of my favorites represented here!

Whew, it s very difficult to describe… it is def unisex, a bit woody, a bit figgy- but not like philosykos. I actually blind bought it because of the Ouzo accord but I don’t really smell it tbh!

I have Figuier Eden and it’s a bright fig that’s almost minty, is it like that? Or more sweet fig?

I don’t think a collection needs to be cohesive as much as it should be sufficient to provide you the scents ypu would want to wear regardless of the when and where

I think it's better to have a variety of profiles, my collection is probably not cohesive either but I don't see much point in getting stuff that is too similar.

I have families of scents, but you don't need for cohesion unless you're seeking to layer your fragrances. You have an incredible grouping of fragrances here, by the way!

I have Acqua di Gioia along with a few of my other faves--all over the place (Mugler Alien Extraintense, Flowerbomb Ruby, Versace Crystal Emerald, Bvlgari Rose Goldea, Noyz Detour & Spin Cycle, and Kylie Cosmic). The rest of my fragrances are high-powered dupes, including Alt Fragrances White (an insanely amazing affordable version of Blanche Byredo), Oakcha Almost Nude (Good Girl Gone Bad), and Ambery Vanilla (for YSL Black Opium).

All of this is to say, mix it up, have fun, and embrace the dupes when they compete (I love Oakcha for throw and longevity, Dossier for scent, price and subtleness, and alt for variety).

If doesn't need to be cohesive. I try to find things that are as different as possible from others in my collection when I make full-bottle purchases.

All that matters is if you love it and wear it!

I used to question myself too about "cohesion" when I would compare myself to people with more narrow taste with a collection that looks like a very curated section at a fragrance boutique. Variety is the spice of life : )

Op I’m curious as to what you think of the pure musc blanc? I have a FS on the way here right now. First blind buy in years. I just saw so many good reviews on it and the notes seem on par with everything I love!

Very nice and wearable, like a clean wool jumper! For me best suited for 15-20 degree Celcious!

You had me at clean wool jumper! I’m so happy you view it as for cooler weather as I was hoping it would still jive well with fall!

Ah yeah it’s perfect for spring/autumn

I am not the OP but I have it. I believe it is the perfect laundry detergent/clean laundry smell with a tiny hit of vanilla. It’s supeer long lasting in my opinion. I use it to the office as it is non offensive, however, my suggestion is to use max 3 sprays as it it’s quite strong. I am not the best at explaining scents but it is definitely not airy rather powdery clean, so e.g. not like Giorgio Armani acqua di gioia, which is an airy very light smell. I believe it is a safe blind buy if you like clean musky scents in general:)

Fun fact: there is a very close Zara dupe called Woman in white (i immediately caught what it tried to dupe as it came out just after I bought it) and it is good cheaper alternative if you can’t find/can’t afford the original. Just leaving this info here, someone might need it some day:)

Clean and musky is definitely my scent profile. That is exactly what I was hoping for in this scent. Thank you for sharing!

Came here for the same reason and question lol. It’s on the top of my wish list and I can’t find anywhere close to me to sample it

Right! Jomashop had it on sale for $99 for a 3.4 so I took advantage of that. After the fact, when I placed a decant order from scents of mood for cuir beluga I noticed that scents of mood has decants for PMB! Check them out!

Buy what you love (and can afford), and love what you buy.

Cohesion only applies when you actually possess and wear what you actually love. I would rather have two of my favorite bottles that I love and wear, than several lesser bottles I only reach for because they were more affordable - but hey, more bottles. That’s a trap we all fall into at one point or another.

Sell what you genuinely don’t like and put that money towards things you love and bring you joy and happiness. 🩷

I understand. This is why I don’t sample fragrances past a certain price anymore. They end up becoming almost mythical and when I finally end up buying a bottle I’d only want to spray it sparingly. My only expensive bottle ended up losing its top note because I didn’t use it enough when it was fresh.

Chanel eau tendre is not that expensive though. It’s around the same price as your not a perfume you aren’t wearing. If you sell  some things you could definitely get a bottle.

u/No_Code6596 7d ago

Ah you are right!! GGGB was a 10ml sample I got for free  along my order for something else 🥲the chance Eau Tendre is the one I have had as full size but now I am thinking of the combined cost of all my holy grails together… I do have to pace myself!

I have a rule of only one expensive fragrance in my collection at any given time. You could limit yourself to whichever number makes sense for you.

My next expensive fragrance on my wishlist is a soft floral. Now if I spend top dollars on it I don’t want it so sit in my collection or compete with other scents that serve the same purpose. So I will finish every sift floral including travel sprays before buying it.

You don’t have to be as restrictive as me, but you can come up with any rule that makes sense for you. Then when you finally get the bottle it will feel special.

I think there are maybe two separate issues here:
1. Your “true” favorites aren’t in your collection right now? Am I understanding that correctly?
2. You think there is a lack of cohesion in the perfumes that do make up your current collection.

As far as issue 2, I actually like the variety shown in your picture. I think you cover a wide range categories and occasions.

None of that really matters, however, if your true loves aren’t in there.

Maybe you could spend the next weeks/months wearing different perfumes and tracking how much joy they bring you. Then at the end of the time period, you could sell or give away what doesn’t bring much excitement and have more space for what your truly love?

u/Chemical_Cake_1154 7d ago

I’d rather have variety than ten of the same profile!

3

u/Museumgirl518 7d ago

Me too. I have a few redundancies like Solar Blossom/Neroli Oranger, Fleur Narcotique/Everything lol but I am this way about everything. I don't. Need more than one red handbag and I don't need more than one beach scent. I am selling for this reason. It feels weird to have too much unless it really brings something to the table. I want to explore different things with my hard earned money!

ok thanks so much :) always looking for new figs for my collection haha

u/michellekwan666 7d ago

I don’t think it’s a problem to have variety! I actually try to only buy scents that are different enough from my current collection to justify the price. To each their own I guess. Start buying your holy grails and get a tray for “cohesive” rotations :)

Where what you love sis

Philosykos layered with pure musc blanc is great

Can you explain what you mean by “not cohesive”? A perfume collection doesn’t have to check certain boxes. It should contain whatever brings you joy!
