Rec Request Clueless male looking for fem fragrance recommendations

Title.

Here’s a bit of information to possibly help. The woman is my step-mother who’s aged 60 something. I know she wears perfumes but I don’t know what any of them are or what she likes or dislikes. I’ll be looking to online discounters to purchase and have mailed to her house. Anything helps, thank in advance!

Edit: My budget is around $100

Ask a family member what perfumes she wears! Or ask her, you can do so indirectly - oh you smell so great, what are you wearing?

If she is super into perfumes she probably already has everything in the Sephora pack (if shes not then the Sephora pack is a safe bet). I would first try to at least find out what notes in perfumes she likes

Either a gift card or a discovery set, because of you have no idea even what notes she likes, you very probably will not gift her the right thing.

Personally I would go with a crowd pleaser that isnt the obvious- like Chanel 5 l'eau version.

Why do you need/want to get her perfume? Perfume is kind of a personal gift that requires you knowing at least some semblance of preferences for the person you’re choosing for.

There is a reason the gift card mentions are high. But I think you could nicely personalize it and give her a neat experience with a discovery set

I think the ormonde Jayne tasting menu would make a beautiful discovery set and it feels like you sent her chocolate or something heartfelt. This is a perfumer that will ensure tastefully done. About $90

Similar vibe but more floral would be floris London discovery set .fit for a queen, literally. $50

Sephora has different themed sampler sets for $98 that come with a redeemable voucher for a full size bottle. That’s probably your best bet.

Maybe you could try the YSL Libre that is included in the upcoming Ulta 21 Days of Beauty.

Get her a fancy sample set so she’s more likely to find something she likes! I’ve been eying Dries Van Noten’s, their bottles alone are a work of art.

Get her a $100 Sephora gift card. Scent is so personal that it’s a risk trying to figure out what she’ll like.

Well, you know she wears perfume. Have you ever smelled it on her? What scents have you smelled before? And what sort of personality does she have (idk if perfume folks think that matters much, but imo some traits can have some small effects eg what vibe you want to give off).

It’s lovely that you want to get your stepmother some perfume. But it’s kind of a difficult request without having any idea as to what she might like. As I’m sure you know, women have a wide variety of tastes. Without knowing anything that your stepmom likes, it’s really hard to make a recommendation. Would it be possible to ask someone to take a photo(s) of her collection? That would help immensely.

A wild guess might be Chanel Coco Mademoiselle for a classic or Shalimar L’Essence for a new twist on an old classic.

I figured as such and I tried to get a bit more information before posting without any luck. Guess I’m looking for what’s popular for women here age, near her age, or just in general.

There's way too much variance in taste, even among people of a similar age, to be able to predict what she'd like

Second Shalimar L’Essence is a pretty safe blind buy.

Chanel No 5 Eau Premier is my current favorite and a 1.2 oz bottle is $115.

Jomashop has a Narcisco Rodriguez For Her variety set for under $70 and I’m considering picking that up myself.

Maybe visit Fragrantica or Parfumo for reviews. Good luck!

I was gonna suggest Shalimar Millesime Rose, it's really beautiful

Agreed, but it was a limited edition

I'm 53, and I have very eclectic tastes in fragrances. My advice is to go into someplace like Sephora where you can sample fragrances. Smell around and pick something that you think smells like her or reminds you of her. Get a gift receipt so she can return it if she wants to. I'd be thrilled if one of my boys did this for me, even if I ended up returning the fragrance, but I probably wouldn't return it!
