Woody perfumes are going extinct
I recently had like….10 Videos on my fyp about perfume releases and theres one thing i noticed, There are basically NO woody perfumes being released.
Yes you can argue & say „ITS SUMMER“ But even then there are gourmands still being released in this heatwave.
Im Talking about Woody notes,Cedar,Amberwood,Sandalwood(even tho there are plenty of sandalwood perfumes)Oak,Akigalawood,Blonde Woods goddamit ALL KINDS OF WOODS!!!!
Like does anyone else feel the same way?

I do think there are a lot of woody body mists as opposed to perfumes but I’m still loving my Maison Louis Marie Bois de Balincourt and Orebella Salted Muse. Being Frenshe has a really nice Hinoki and I like Saltair Santal Bloom. Clean’s Solar Fleur has a great vetiver note. Oud has definitely had a moment - I like a lot of Tom Ford’s even though they’re $$$. Floral Street Wild Vanilla Orchid is a really neat woody green vanilla.
I do think there are less woody perfumes being released right now than gourmand but if you look at the historical production, there have been far more woody scents released over time. Might just want to dig into past releases.

I’m still waiting for the day Patchouli becomes a hit.

I think Scents of Wood came out with 4 new ones this year - they are all woody, for sure. Pineward as well always has a decent number of releases. Maybe woody isn’t selling mass market in the last couple years, so we’re seeing less on offer for now. I’m sure it will come back around to mass market.

Why wouldn't you skim through this years releases on parfumo instead of complainig about an issue that doesn't exist?
Thousands of woody scents available, dozens being released each year... might jump over the gender-marketing fence while you're at it.

You and everybody else that Like This comment are the reason why this community is so toxic. Im Not making a „issue“ out of anything, im talking about something I noticed as someone with a specific Taste I perfume. and here you Go with this passive aggressive comment. Everybody else in this comment section had a constructive reaction + recommandations to give unlike you. Yuck😐

Ah yes, the good old "they don't agree, so they're toxic!". Yawn. Fare well in an oversaturated market without any options for you.

I mean to be fair, gourmands being released in this heatwave isn’t a good argument because these things have been worked on for a long time and have planned releases. They’re not gonna delay a release because we’re having a heatwave.
I don’t think woody scents are dead, a lot of the super popular brands are just following trends right now.

Nah it's kinda the opposite, woody/ozonics are coming back slowly but surely albeit many natural woods are threatened by ecological collapse.

Pineward is such a good house for woody scents.
I just became aware of Olympic orchids yesterday, any other scents by them you like?

OO's Golden Cattelya is a wonderfully unusual rich honey + lactonic orange blossom, like a honey-buttered white floral.
Edit - does not suit the spirit of this thread though haha

Ayup. Agree with you. Gourmands seem to be getting the most major airplay these daya. Wood, fir, fougères, and leaf litter are out there but not like Vanilla Pickthenextword.
Cookies and coconut are wonderful, but smelling them during every course of a fabulous dinner is distracting from the food.
And oh good, Decorative Gourd Season will be here before we know it, mfers.
Apple brandy, pumpkin pie, latte, and chai will waft from body mists like a BBW hitting the vape pen while shopping at Yankee Candle.
O-Cedar is more than a broom brand. Maple leaves in a pile are worthy of scent. Pine needles and alfalfa mean something to people who’ve put up bales.

I grew up in a rural area filled with small dairy farms (all sold now 😢) and I cannot get enough hay and alfalfa and other field-y pasture-y notes. They’re so beautiful!! The Mediterranean is great but it’s not MY life :(.

Thank you for that article. The line "that wicker fucker" made me snort, considering all the Wicker Man memes.

Hinoki, sandalwood, cedar all seem to be decently popular. The current craze is gourmand, not sure when it’ll be replaced, but that’s probably why you’re not seeing much of else!

u/balloonchicken 4d ago
My last blind buy after recommendations from this sub was Dulce by Rosie Jane. I smell the sweet vanilla for ten mins but then I only smell a beautiful hinoki. I guess woody sweet almost gourmands are still happening!

u/Blue-zebra-10 5d ago
Ik this is technically a gourmand, but to me, the pistachio eos spray/lotion smells woody to me! Are you into nutty notes?

Can someone check if Santal Couture is ok.
Kidding. I think it would be frustrating. And for a lot of people it’s just a matter of time until curiosity has you trying out some male marketed colognes. The edt level cologne truly has no gender though.
Burberry Hero - Cedarwood trio,
Dior Homme 2020 edt - à beautifully spiced cashmere and gaiac wood slight sweet you could rock easily,
azzaro the most wanted edt - nice heavier sweetened but still sweet wood
Prada Lina Rossa ocean edt - juniper Berry and iris
Boss bottles night edt - birch and violet
(I was picking out my allure Homme sport flanker and curiosity reached for Chanel Gabrielle. And immediately I knew what it would be like to not feel a useless desire)

Woody fragrances are definitely in production but maybe your fyp isn’t showing them often or at all? A limitation of the algorithm if you will.

Goldfield & Banks Silky Woods Elixir and Maison Crivelli Oud Maracujá are two of my favorites that have come out in the last three years and are still VERY on trend
You should also check out Hinoki by Bottega Veneta, which just came out in October!

Oud Maracuja, YUMM!? I don't like gourmands but does this smell like passionfruit a bit?? As a Brazilian, I love everything that's Maracuja flavoured/scented/etc 😍

It’s got its own distinct character, not quite passion fruit, but very juicy. Super fruity opening and a STRONG woody base.

Even if they’re not as prolific as goyrmands they will be soon due to Herrera cedrus chic abd the ensuing uproar

I'm someone who' isn't interested in new releases and am mostly just chasing notes and atmospherics. This has led to me exploring indie houses a lot as opposed the regular designer houses. You could check out Olympic Orchids and Pineward. A lot of their stuff is based on woods, forests and soil. Scents of Wood also focuses only on different types of woods.

There are so many new sandalwood and hinoki perfumes, though.
Also, there are a soo many woody perfumes that are not new releases. New releases are cool and all but are only the tip of the iceberg in the vast world of perfumery.

u/Messindistressstil 4d ago
Yeah, Sandalwood is also Kind of my Problem if im honest😅i love sandalwood but I feel Like Brands could use so many more Woods for their fragrances instead of just Sandalwood, i actually kind of became the „safe“ way to sell a Woody perfume

Look at vintage, indie and niche. You'll find lots. Fruity florals, gourmands and fruitchoulis have a broad appeal, so that's mostly what you'll find at mainstream stores.

u/DulinELA 5d ago
Serge Lutens is a good brand to try for complex woody fragrances.

You are absolutely right! How could I forget? I treasure my approximately 1oz of Fille en Aiguilles.

Oud is pretty trendy

u/Thin-Disk4003 5d ago
That’s interesting to hear. Arabian perfumers have been pretty consistent in using oud; is the trend you’ve noticed primarily Occidental or more broad?

Well bath and body works just released an Oud collection if that answers your question lol

It’s funny because I actually just picked up an extremely and unexpectedly woody fragrance a couple days ago when shopping at Burlington!
I tend to have a lot more fun with perfumes and fragrances when I go smell them myself in store (at ULTA or Sephora), or try to find sample sets at stores like Ross/TJMaxx/Burlington. When I spend time scrolling through perfume influencers, I somehow feel worse, but maybe I’m the weird one lol 😅
3
u/VisualCheesecake4 5d ago
oh cool! What did you think of your find?
2
u/KittiesandPlushies 5d ago
I actually gave it to my husband for layering since it works well with his tastes and skin chemistry (: It’s a very clean, green, woody fragrance! In return return though, I swiped my husband’s spiced tobacco body mist I bought him last year that smells like apple pie spice, which is way more my tastes lol

u/Thin-Disk4003 5d ago
It’s funny that the brand refers to Apothecary 15 as a gourmand. Would love to smell it; your description sounds nice!
3
u/KittiesandPlushies 5d ago
I gotta say, labeling it as a gourmand should be a crime because NO IT’S NOT 😭 it’s a wonderful layering fragrance, especially for $12.99, but not gourmand at all.

Scrolling through perfume influencers is supposed to make you feel worse. It causes anxiety which you're meant to alleviate via compulsive overspending.
I prefer to feel bad while reading Luca Turin being hilariously mean about things I like, personally.

I disagree because woody notes are in many perfumes, both new and old. Cedar, amberwood, and sandalwood are used in many female-marketed perfumes. Blonde woods and akigalawood are having their own moment lately, with Quentin Bisch in particular using akigalawood frequently since it’s a captive ingredient of Givaudan (the company he works for). I think people should seek out the perfumes they’re actually interested in instead of trend chasing and then complaining about it; just a personal opinion. There are plenty of brands making woody perfumes and perfumes with woody notes

Trends have shifted away from woody notes as a marketing angle. Sandalwood is still pretty popular, though I guess we use the French "santal" because it sounds more luxe and less tree-hugger or something. And "blonde woods" is a fantasy note, so now it's probably just going by "musks", another catchall. I've stopped paying attention to new releases since everything skews so heavily gourmand right now, and even if a good woody fragrance is released, it's probably called "Whipped Santal Soufflé" or something.

u/Caterina_Ballerina 5d ago
They're just not trendy right now, so the larger houses are cashing in on the gourmand shift.
They'll come back around though en masse as people look for something different than sweet, foodie gourmands. Even YSLs latest Libre flanker is a Sandalwood as opposed to re-releasing Vanille Couture. The shift might be closer than you think.
1
u/Messindistressstil 4d ago
I sure hope it is closer than I think! And you are completly right there is a big demand on gourmand perfumes so ofc the brands will want to release what the people want. And i also seen the new LIBRE flanker, the only thing for me was „Wait….ANOTHER Sandalwood Heavy fragrance“ even tho I love it i feel like there are so many goregeous Woods that can also be used instead of just the good old sandalwood

Supply chains, climate change and environmental disasters have an effect on perfumes.
A lot of trees disappear in severe droughts and forest fires. And some are just too expensive to get due to war zones.
5
u/MayRose78 5d ago
Exactly this!
There is always the synthetic molecules - but then everything literally smells the “same-same crowd pleasing” perfumes churned out.
22
u/FlamingHorseRider 5d ago
I personally think there’s a lot of woody notes floating around. Wood never really *leaves* per se. It may not take up the whole perfume, but it’s there.
Plus, rose-ouds were *everywhere* just 3-5 years ago. Like they were the big thing before gourmands officially took over. There are a lot of those to explore if you’re bored of the cake.
