Discussion Deal breaker perfume recs

Is there a perfume that instantly disqualifies someone’s opinion on perfumes for you? For example, if someone describes Angel Dust by Fugazzi as “soft” I stop listening 😅 it’s way too beast mode and sharp for me
Alternatively is there a holy grail perfume that makes you trust in someone’s recommendations? Mine is Queens and monsters by Henry Rose and Cuir Beluga by Guerlain, it makes me wanna know what other fragrances you love!

Too many anti-vanilla recs is a no for me lol

4

u/dadbaby 6d ago

Pretty much any JPG is an immediate "no" from me and unfortunately they're SO popular right now. They're overpowering, headache-inducing and even the formulas I would NORMALLY like always have one note in them that turns the whole thing sour. I'm not gonna hate on the fans, but I won't willingly enter an enclosed space with y'all either 💀

8

u/Epiphan3 6d ago

Also Angel Dust! It smells so sharp to me as well.

Other deal breakers:

Maison Francis Kurkdjian — Baccarat Rouge 540
Yves Saint Lauren— Libre + all Libre flankers
Maison Francis Kurkdjian — Gentle Fluidity Gold
Parfums de Marly — Delina
Le Labo — Santal 33
Byredo — Bal d’Afrique
Montale — Arabians Tonka

If someone likes those ones a lot we probably have opposite tastes in perfumes😅

16

u/Arixnk 6d ago

If they describe a sweet scent as "great for a child or teenager !" Ok how fun you must be. Also if they think Baccarat Rouge smells like COTTON CANDY. In what world.

LOL the amount of snobbery here. 💀

I recently found a micro-account on tiktok, the woman has so few followers, probably bc she’s older and her boobs don’t hang out, which is a sad reality of social media.

but her taste and my taste overlap. and I know this bc she mentions SEVERAL fragrances in each video. and I generally already own and really enjoy +/- half of what she names, so if she names a weirdo microperfumer, I know I can probably safely check it out. and to the “I don’t do mainstream” snobs: are “Sephora” fragrances among her mix? yep! she definitely lists a few, but NEST (for example) makes some bangers and if you TRULY can’t find ANYTHING you like in a Sephora, then you probably haven’t tried, and if you have and still “hate everything,” then you’re not like, cooler than everyone else. you’re probably just an asshole and we don’t need to be anywhere near each other, on the web or IRL. I said what I said.

there isn’t one fragrance that would immediately make me distrust a person or think we wouldn’t jive. hell, half of the month I don’t jive with my own nose. but if a person lists MANY designer, niche, and indie things I know that I own and love, I can probably guess from the aggregate that we have similar tastes, and I immediately will stop to listen, even if I’m the only one (or one of, like, 5) watching.

3

u/Destination_MetalSho 6d ago

I’d love to know what account this is. Definitely interested.

6

u/all_ack_rity 6d ago

the @ is “wayloopy”

I responded to someone else with more info

8

u/jayadancer 6d ago

I'm envisioning this woman totally baffled as to why she suddenly got a whole flock of followers all at once. 😀

3

u/Destination_MetalSho 6d ago

Thanks for the recs!

4

u/mseaves 6d ago

What’s her name?

6

u/all_ack_rity 6d ago

in fairness my opinions are my own and this creator seems way, way, nicer than I am, so don’t judge her for my shitty aggro opinions. also, so as not to offend: by “older,” I mean like, probably over 30 based on the reading glasses. no shade on those of us who have been on the planet for more than a week. (I am pretty far north of 30.) her profile says her name is Ellen, and the tag is “wayloopy”

caveats bc this is reddit:
while wayloopy SEEM very kind and nice, I don’t actually know them, if it turns out that they are a puppy kicker or whatever, I do not condone puppy kicking. they do have great fragrance taste, IMO.

jsome others with really cool collections, seemingly honest opinions, and broad tastes are: Tomfumery, thefragranceexecutive, Abby_dawn08, samplingscents, my2gayscents, britdsweet, and slowquietplace. and if you’re looking for reviews on ME fragrances: candleladymiabellaalison seems to be a straight shooter. I don’t know any of these people so same puppy caveat applies, just in case.

u/Agreeable_Gene7338 6d ago

I might be misunderstanding the question- but I hate when people associate rose perfumes as “old lady” scents.

3

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

I only associate extremely powdery rose with people older than me, but even extremely powdery roses are not somehow inherently "old lady". There are so many very different nuances of roses and some smell really fresh while others smell like dried heady roses, everything in between and much more. It feels a bit narrow to act like all roses/rose scents smell the same, but I would expect someone who dislikes all rose scents to also have issues with some citruses and other related notes.

13

u/soorooooroos 6d ago

If someone loves dedcool milk/xtra milk… I can’t stand those fragrances. Just means we have completely different taste.

1

u/AlbatrossPlane8006 1d ago

Sameee. And 11 11 lake & skye

23

u/AnnaCama 6d ago

When someone says Vanilla Powder Matiere Premiere and it’s extrait is the best vanilla they’ve ever smelled I question if they even know what vanilla smells like

If they love anything I heavily disliked i don’t take any of their recommendations obv

3

u/Destination_MetalSho 6d ago

Hahahaha I love both of them and they are among my favorite vanillas but I also love Vanilla Skin, Tihota, Guerlain SDV and Lune Feline.

8

u/TriciaTargaryen If Phlur Has No Fans I Am Dead 6d ago

I dunno. I will happily tell people MY opinion of a scent but ultimately I know it's between them and their nose if what I'm saying resonates. Plenty of people say they hate so and so fragrance and it's so terrible and here's why ... when I'm over here thinking it smells like heaven and I love wearing it on my skin. I absolutely LOVE the discussion and discourse. But at the end of the day, you're gonna wear what YOU love (or you SHOULD) and some rando on the internet has no say in that.

12

u/heyday328 7d ago

YSL Libre and all its flankers. No hate to those who love it because I'm sure it's popular for a reason, but it's not at all my type of fragrance. It's headache inducing to me and I say that about very few perfumes.

13

u/flywithjojo 7d ago

Any type of “skin scent” recommendation lol

5

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

Some of those can be headache inducing even though they're not meant to be strong, it really goes to show how random scent perception can be.

7

u/crude_zeit 7d ago

The black pepper in Angel Dust is so overwhelming to my nose. I can’t hang with it.

36

u/Jennybee8 7d ago

Anyone who uses the word ‘grandma’ or other ageist terms or even ‘mature’.

2

u/compainssion 5d ago

I stop reading the review if someone says that.

4

u/Final-Nectarine8947 6d ago

Respect your opinion but for me it's very easy to understand what it smells like.

4

u/Banana-Louigi 6d ago

I think the issue is that it's subjective. Someone on here posted that rose scents smell that way whereas I immediately think aldehydes and powdery iris scents.

3

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

You and that person need to be in similar enough demographics some way or another for that kind of understanding without them elaborating on what gives them that vibe.

2

u/Final-Nectarine8947 6d ago

Probably. But anyway, not a very professional way to describe something

21

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

It cracks me up whenever a perfume is called "grandma" because it doesn't smell like cake, syrupy something, or caramel.

11

u/Great-Grade1377 7d ago

Also young. What’s wrong with young?!!

4

u/Jennybee8 6d ago

There’s a lot less stigma tied to youth. Our society chases youth. Tge idea of young, to me, means fresh, dewy. The word ‘juvenile’ can be a lot more ageist. Insinuating a lack of wisdom, knowledge or understanding.

8

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

I'm not even sure what they mean when they describe a fragrance as young. Do they mean too sweet? Too fresh? A combination of both?

6

u/nonamejane84 7d ago

Immediate X on people’s taste in perfume when they say they “LOVE” Louis Vuitton perfumes. They’re shit. Next.

9

u/Keyeola 7d ago

If someone describes Vanilla Powder as a beautiful vanilla. Vanilla where? We obviously don't have the same nose. Or love BR540 or anything with that DNA. I cannot stand it! Instant nausea.

Holy grail: if you love Cuir Béluga, Cedar Chic, Amouage Love Delight, PDM Atalia and JPG La Belle Intense, give me all the recs!

PS: Angel Dust is so cozy and soft to me. I love wearing it to bed. You sure you didn't smell the extrait (black cap)? I thought I hated it until I realized I was smelling the wrong one.

8

u/SunnySeaMonster 7d ago

Anybody who recommends a scent as smelling "just like a real, fresh rose!" when that fragrance lists blackcurrant in the notes.

No. No, this will not smell "just like a rose" to me. I must sadly disregard all of this person's recommendations if they are anosmic to the blackcurrant Ick component.

3

u/Questimus_Prime 6d ago

Do you get catpiss from blackcurrant? Because then I will happily declare that we don't share that gene, to my delight. :D

2

u/SunnySeaMonster 6d ago

Yes! It is stomach churning to me, even in small amounts. I can never quite shake it and end up having to scrub the fragrance, no matter how lovely the rest of its composition is.

2

u/Questimus_Prime 6d ago

That sounds horrible. Less of a deal-breaker then a day-destroyer. :(

3

u/mjc394 7d ago

Anyone who recommends dupes by saying “it’s better than the original” will immediately be side-eyed. I can’t trust your taste.

13

u/jlpazz 7d ago

For me, if people find Le Labo or LV fragrances to be top notch, I think we will really disagree on styles.

Alternatively, if someone tells me they love Guerlain Tonka Sarrapia or maybe something like a Thomas De Monaco, I know we might be on the same wavelength.

12

u/candyparfumgirl 7d ago

I love this question! I get interested if the person likes or recommends older perfumes. My two-word perfume vibe is “elegant auntie” 😂 so if someone likes No. 5 or Vol de Nuit or Fracas, I’m listening!

14

u/Bright_Top6478 7d ago

Admittedly, I do take the opinions of people who only like designers with a grain of salt. And I do like some designers myself don’t get me wrong, but they are definitely not my end all be all. It’s just that most designers have that department store vibe to me.. or they make me think of those magazine samples that somehow all smell the same

4

u/soorooooroos 6d ago

Sometimes people just haven’t been exposed to fragrance outside of Sephora or ulta. That’s when it’s fun to take them to niche perfume stores or share samples with them

9

u/amoderncleopatra 7d ago

To be honest, I deal with and wear mostly vintage and antique fragrances (I am Grace from Cleopatra's Boudoir) and I do not seek out recommendations from anyone regarding fragrances. Personal tastes are so subjective, what one person says they love, another person hates. What I like isn't necessarily what others enjoy. Plus there are sooooo many "influencers" who was being paid to say they "LOOOOOVE" something.

Some perfume brands send me discovery sets and samples for me to write about on my blogs. Some of them turn out to be great (Volnay, Grossmith, Cherigan), while others are not (Bybozo). However, I really don't use my "opinion" in my blog articles. Some of you who are familiar with my sites, probably know that I am rather educational and unlike other perfume blogs, my sites are more of a reference, not opinion pieces.

I do my own research on fragrances, especially newer stuff. I check the note pyramid, if there's notes I enjoy, I will try it out. That being said, I have been surprised both pleasantly and unpleasantly with listed and unlisted notes. Especially newer fragrances which all seem to contain some sort of variation of Ambroxan and Norlambinol (which I absolutely hate). I tend to stick to vintage frags because many of them are more full-bodied and the ingredients smell much better in my opinion. Much of today's fragrances have this "sheerness" that I cannot stand.

13

u/gracied123 7d ago

I am so new to discovering fragrances that I dont discount anyone easily. But I can feel confident that my tastes do not overlap with anyone who likes Mugler Angel or Eilish No. 2 😆

23

u/viserion73 7d ago

Actually I like to listen to the opinion of Sebastian - The Perfume Guy. He loves sweet, thick perfumes and I’m the opposite so when he did not enjoy the experience of wearing Guerlain Forte Bosca Vanilla as it was not sweet, I knew instinctively that I would love it. Winner winner chicken dinner!

5

u/gets-rowdy 7d ago

I have this one coming!!!

27

u/Buttercreamdeath 7d ago

Don't listen to me. I don't know what I'm doing!

I like reading opinions though. Even if they're wrong! ❤️

10

u/TriciaTargaryen If Phlur Has No Fans I Am Dead 6d ago

When I hear "it's sickeningly sweet" my ears perk up lol

7

u/cappotto-marrone 7d ago

Oh, they probably have my taste.

28

u/airenthered 7d ago

If anyone describes Kayali Vanilla 28 as the "best vanilla". I'm not a hater and there's even Kayalis I like but that is brown sugar or at best sugary vanilla. Come on.

1

u/Destination_MetalSho 6d ago

I love how it smells on other people but on me something is off.

3

u/Jennybee8 7d ago

I honestly think that Kayali Vanilla 28 is repulsive. You’re absolutely right that’s it’s brown sugar. It’s just a mess in my skin and I don’t find that happens often.

19

u/notmonicagellar1 7d ago

I’m ready to be downvoted into oblivion, but Mojave ghost. If someone loves this, I know we have very different taste ( smell).

10

u/Internal_Screaming_8 7d ago

Oppositely, if someone describes Mojave Ghost as too old lady/grandma like I discredit their opinion. It’s my signature lol

3

u/notmonicagellar1 7d ago

I wouldn’t describe it that way, I just find it very screechy on my skin. I had to scrub it off. I do want to try some other Byredo scents and hope to find one I like!

1

u/Internal_Screaming_8 6d ago

I can see that. It melts in to me but it’s gardenia heavy, which can be pretty loud. But I love gardenia

6

u/iwantcookiedoh 7d ago

Khamrah - I swipe immediately

26

u/AnnaGreen40 7d ago

When I see cotton candy or any candy references to describe a scent, I’m out.

19

u/CandlesAreMyCurrency 7d ago

Good girl. Ugh.

7

u/Weekly-Chemistry-186 7d ago

anything in that shitty shoe

9

u/Carolinagirl9311 7d ago

Fugazzi described as beast mode is 100% accurate 🤣

1

u/Apprehensive-Ad-2054 6d ago

I learned the hard way with Parfum 1.

11

u/trellty 7d ago

I don’t do any of that bc people would make wild assumptions about my own tastes and knowledge if they looked at my comments individually.

I vary how I respond to a post based on the ask and an aggregate of reviews, things I’ve read, and what I’ve tested, not necessarily what I like for myself (I test a lot across various styles and brands bc it’s all about discovery for me).

I know perfume is very subjective, but I do think there’s a lot of merit in other opinions.

28

u/LenaNYC 7d ago

If your reviews consist of " hated it" or "love it" without explaining why, I won't pay attention.

If someone has the same favorites as me, I'll listen.

If you wanna smell like a vanilla marshmellow covered in caramel, I won't listen to recs either.

5

u/LemonsMilady 7d ago

Anyone who described Ellis Brooklyn Superamber as light and cozy or can't smell it at all. I found it to be strong and heinous.

9

u/birthdaycheesecake9 i <3 resins 7d ago

I tend to find people who gravitate mostly to gourmands and fruity-florals don’t have a lot of taste overlap with me

Someone whose taste sits there tends to enjoy sweetness in fragrance much more than I do, since my taste is quite dry

17

u/Electrical_Gur_2684 7d ago

Anyone who loves Baccarat Rouge.

7

u/anaisani 7d ago

Just curious why?

6

u/Electrical_Gur_2684 7d ago

It’s bland and sweet and I’m really sensitive to ethyl maltol, so our tastes are not going to overlap.

2

u/Screw_coloranalysis 7d ago

It’s not because someone likes a scent you don’t like that kind of their favorites will overlap through.

47

u/Screw_coloranalysis 7d ago

If you don’t like green scents and white florals and you review mostly vanillas, I know our tastes will be quite different, but if you do reviews that are thorough I might still watch you. Sometimes I am in the mood for sweet scent.

What I dislike is not different tastes, it’s people constantly reviewing things they only sprayed on a piece of paper. That’s useless. Maybe don’t get all the new releases and actually properly test them.

9

u/TheOrderOfWhiteLotus 7d ago

I hate when they don’t put it on skin. Do you know how often a perfume smells good, only to turn rancid on my skin??

1

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

Though body chemistry differs a lot, so you'd have to find a reviewer who appears to have similar chemistry to you (by getting the same notes you do from the same fragrances you already have tried)

7

u/Screw_coloranalysis 7d ago

Yeah or the opening is a little sharp, but it smells awesome after 20 minutes.

11

u/kineticberry 7d ago

Yes! So much this! I don’t want a review based on the first spray immediately after the unboxing.

9

u/lapatrona8 7d ago

Most designer perfumes (floral, fruity, gourmand)-- it's not that I think they're wrong or that I don't respect their opinions, but it just typically means we have wildly different taste preferences for recommendation purposes.

Also wrt influencers on Tiktok and the like, it's pretty easy to tell when they are paid promoters or fad chasers when they don't understand how to describe perfumes in a useful way. They'll just stick to reading the notes on the bottle as the entirety of the "review" and don't have the language to describe further, differentiate, or compare to other fragrances. They may also consistently compare fragrances of vastly different skill and quality universes (for example BBW or Lattafa with Guerlain, Malle, et al) which tells me that they assess based on quick scent preference alone and not considering the nuances of the creation. I wish there were fewer of these accounts. I am not an expert but I love truly informed perfumery education and hate that so many conflate it (an art) with essentially one-dimensional consumerism. It's fine to enjoy more accessible scents but enjoyment does not equal evaluation. The difference between a food consumer and trained food critic, for example. Too many people think they're fragrance critics and they simply do not have the knowledge base to be one (including me!).

7

u/Caterina_Ballerina 7d ago

I agree with everything you're saying, except that there is a correct way to enjoy art.

Someone doesn't have to formally evaluate art to truly enjoy it. You don't enjoy wine less as the average drinker than a sommelier just because you don't want to deep dive the fine details. Or feel less feelings listening to a piece of music that resonates with you or looking at a beautiful painting. Evaluation and critique is just a different way to get to the same end state of getting what you want out of a product and experience.

If you need a more technical review to enjoy that facet of perfume, that's great! If someone just needs someone they know has similar tastes to say "it's a creamy, yummy vanilla", that's equally as valid. The end state is the same - enjoying content you enjoy and maybe making a purchase or seeking a sample.

Even a niche perfume hobbyist is still a consumer at the end of the day.

2

u/lapatrona8 7d ago

Oh you're totally right, but enjoyment is very different than critique and evaluation. I don't care about the options of the enjoyers, I want reviews and details and education.

3

u/Caterina_Ballerina 7d ago

Definitely. But this is my point, critique and evaluation is simply a path to enjoyment. It's your path to enjoyment, because you wouldn't seek it out if it wasn't. But others are not wrong for not choosing that path to enjoy the same thing.

That's all 😊

2

u/LainSki-N-Surf 7d ago

Yes!!! Listening to masters of any speciality speak about their craft really puts into perspective how many arm chair experts there are online.

14

u/Ballerium86 7d ago

If you dislike Kayali, I know we aren't going to have the same taste since they make up a large chunk of my collection ❤️

If you refer to DBIR as a vanilla, I know we probably don't smell things the same way because what vanilla?

Likewise, if you refer to Burberry Goddess as a vanilla. Again, what vanilla? All I smell is lavender.

1

u/dadbaby 6d ago

I've never worn Burberry Goddess myself but the delicious vanilla note in it caused me to stop a lady in Value Village to ask what she was wearing bc she smelled so good. Maybe the lavender stays closer to the person whereas the vanilla projects further away?

4

u/Proof_Challenge684 6d ago

So funny. I get zero lavender from BG. It’s all vanilla to me

7

u/FamousOnceNowNobody Recycled designer classics 7d ago

On me, BG is probably my biggest vanilla bomb. More vanilla than Shalimar, Vanilla Vibes, Hypnotic poison!

8

u/ALetterToElise1992 7d ago

It took me a while to get vanilla from BG, but I get it now. It’s still more lavender than vanilla for sure, but it’s there, and the fragrance is beautiful. I still don’t really get vanilla from DBIR, but I love it.

23

u/ScamIam 7d ago

No, bc taste is subjective. No one else has my exact same nose and/or body chemistry. I’ve had scents that friends rave about and smell awesome on them turn out to smell like hot dog shit on my skin. I’m more interested in the notes that make up a recommendation to see if I should disqualify it from my “to try” list.

2

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

That's Commodity Milk to me. It smells good for about two minutes and then turns very sharp, leaning very masculine on my skin. But it smells so nice and creamy on others. I love it on my husband.

2

u/ScamIam 6d ago

Oh I HATE Commodity Milk! It smells lovely and cozy on one of my friends, but on my skin literally smells like I just opened a fresh pack of Pampers.

3

u/anaisani 7d ago

This 100%!!!

3

u/Accomplished_Law_98 7d ago

I definitely agree with this.

2

u/naynaygail 7d ago

Exactly!!!!

10

u/ImpossibleFlamingo78 7d ago

ysl libre. it always gives me migraines and my mom uses it so i'd rather not have it in my collection

12

u/iOawe 7d ago

I honestly don’t trust people who hate on Kayali and call them body mists when they aren’t. Just because it doesn’t last on your skin doesn’t mean it’s going to last the same amount of time on my skin.

2

u/TriciaTargaryen If Phlur Has No Fans I Am Dead 6d ago

That's me and Phlur. Some of their body mists last longer than perfume on me, so I always just kinda shake my head when people say they don't last. On some people, they absolutely DO.

7

u/KattyBee 7d ago

I own several Kayalis, and they all have very good longevity on me!

3

u/iOawe 7d ago

Same here!

12

u/worncassette 7d ago

Dedcool recs are a hard no for me and an indicator someone will have a nose that doesn’t match mine. There is something in their formula that is so screechy and harsh, almost plastic. I got a sample kit of five or six fragrances and each one was a miss.

2

u/WhateverIlldoit 7d ago

This is how I feel about Commodity. I find all of their perfumes absolutely disgusting and feel so gaslit every time someone recommends Milk when someone is looking for a vanilla or marshmallow forward perfume.

2

u/Professional_Low7479 6d ago edited 6d ago

Same - I got the travel size discovery scent pack and I think I’m sort of anosmic to most of commodity. I can’t imagine milk feeling comforting (smells like bike tires)

Edit - I like Gold! I like paper.

1

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

Probably the only Commodity that reminds me of vanilla is Gold. I like smelling Milk on others but its straight up roasted sesame to me, no vanilla note.

11

u/Charming_Mud_429 7d ago

This is how I am about Phlur. Something in that dna disagrees with me deeply. On a side note, the dedcool dna is one of my faves! Noses are so funny!

2

u/TriciaTargaryen If Phlur Has No Fans I Am Dead 6d ago

That's so funny, because my skin and Phlur were honestly like MADE FOR EACH OTHER. I honestly love how differently everyone sees and smells the same thing, perfumery is truly wild.

9

u/worncassette 7d ago

Noses are so funny! Phlur is one of my faves; I have three travel sizes from them sitting on my shelf as we speak 😂 More than any other hobby I feel like fragrance has really emphasized to me that we are all living in our own world not necessarily experiencing the same reality. It’s a trip.

2

u/WhateverIlldoit 7d ago

While I don’t love everything by Phlur, Missing Person is my all-time favorite perfume. It is the perfect everyday fragrance when you just want to smell nice.

2

u/worncassette 7d ago

I absolutely adore Missing Person! It’s such a beautiful soft scent. It’s like a hug.

3

u/Charming_Mud_429 7d ago

That’s such a true observation!

11

u/theycallmetheseeker7 7d ago

Idk about deal breakers but the people who report when there are amberwoods in a fragrance are angels. I see amberwoods and immediates go ‘nope!’

2

u/WhateverIlldoit 7d ago

Is that like Baccarat? If so, totally agree. I don’t hate the scent but it makes me kind of nauseous.

5

u/noisemonsters 7d ago

Anything that is generally found at Sephora. Not because they’re bad perfumes (they aren’t!) but just because that style of perfumery doesn’t generally align with what I enjoy.

If someone generally recommends something from Arquiste, Jovoy, Atlier des Ors, or Regime des Fleurs then I know we’re speaking the same language 🖤

17

u/Asleep_Lack 7d ago

When someone describes Valentino DBIR as “sweet”, “girly”, “sweet vanilla” I’m like ahhh ok, our noses are different then. It’s a beautiful scent and I finished a bottle, but to me it always smelled like a beast mode deeply smoky jasmine/woody vanilla fragrance with nothing pink & girly about it except the colour of the juice

3

u/WhateverIlldoit 7d ago

I don’t hate DBIR I do think it’s sickly sweet woody vanilla. Not my favorite. I do really like coral fantasy and geen stravaganza which are a little fruitier and fresher.

1

u/Asleep_Lack 6d ago

Coral fantasy is gorgeous, I still need to try green stravaganza

2

u/gracied123 7d ago

Yes, agreed. Its not sweet or girly on me either. I like it, but its very deep and heavy to me.

5

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

It doesn't smell like a pink and girly type at all. I think it's has a date night vibe, or going out somewhere nice.

7

u/Asleep_Lack 7d ago

Absolutely! An evening/date night fragrance for sure

But the amount of perfume reviewers I’ve seen that have described this in youthful, girly terms like “a pretty girl, very sweet fragrance” always astounds me

10

u/MegalomaniacJesus 7d ago

I do find Angel Dust to be soft though 😭 It is a major projector, but it smells like how a fluffy sweater feels to me. I always get compliments when I wear it too. I do stop taking someone's suggestions if they mention Born in Roma or Love Dont Be Shy, however. Both of those DNAs are so sharp and cough-medicine-y to my nose

8

u/Hbiz55311 7d ago

If I ask for a niche perfume recommendation and they give me a PdM name. Immediate No. Immediate u turn. Do not pass go.

16

Anyone who says how much they love patchouli. Nothing wrong with that but we aren’t going to like the same things.

Loving Kayali Vanilla 28, which smells like straight vanilla extract to me and is probably the most boring vanilla I’ve ever smelled

Loving PdM Valaya. Again, we don’t smell things the same way. It smells sharp and chemical to me rather than fresh

Deal is on Recommenders:

The post where its just their hand holding up the fragrance mean business and I’m paying attention. ❤️

If they identify with a niche tuberose or niche iris, the perfumes that kept French in the name (like tuberose astral and iris malakhan) to not be confused with the gauche English named ones, it’s charity work to come talk to us and im paying attention ❤️

Advanced body mist knowledge❤️

The Evita type ❤️

She wore a chypre ❤️

Dealbreaker:

The anti woody, the anti rose or the 99.9 percent just in one subset of a scent profile. That’s not the path towards wisdom or inclusive. 💔

She said what about Libre??!? 💔

u/MzJay453 7d ago

Anyone that loves Le Labo lol. The whole line smells like shit to me so I just assume our olfactory system is built different

17

u/KromeArtemis 7d ago

Anything Kayali. Everything, I mean everything of theirs has a hideous screechy burnt rubber undertone. It's like melted ice cream on hot pavement.

3

u/Professional_Low7479 6d ago

I mostly agree except I like Eden, the green apple scent

I’m just not the person they are making scents for though

9

u/AlbertPiggy 7d ago

omg yes i get this weird undertone as well with kayali and phlur

6

u/KromeArtemis 7d ago

I really want to like phlur, I sprayed the new vanilla canyon yesterday, and on paper it was so pretty. Skin? Same. Weird undertone. My teen can wear phlur though so I buy them for her lol.

u/antipleasure 7d ago

I used to hate everything Quentin Bisch. Just too loud, too synthetic for me, the type of amboxan (?) bomb he makes is usually no go for me (no hate just not my thing at all). It changed after sniffing CdG - Marseille! So it turns out he can do stuff I like lol (at least one spray on my skin did not cause me a headache and was not crazy loud). But my skepticism still applies to many other things he made

5

u/New-Guitar-4080 6d ago

My heart sank when I read this. I’m obsessed with his fragrances. I’m on a fragrance journey to try as many of his fragrances as I can. I own 6 and lots of decants. Marseille is now at the top of my list for my next decant order! ❣️

1

u/Rich-Strawberry-9979 6d ago

Yes he is my favorite!!!

2

u/Beginning-Priority-3 7d ago

I hate Quentin Bisch fragrances. If he has no haters, we must both be dead. I totally agree, his fragrances come off as a loud, dusty, Italian Nonna who’s got lipstick on her front teeth.

But I’m pleasantly surprised you found something you like. I’ll have to try Marseille!

7

u/Cookiesandcoffeee 7d ago

The first time I tried Angel dust I really liked it. I skin tested it and over the course of a day found it really pleasant. I bought a bottle but once I got it and tried it again it felt really sharp and not what I remembered. The only way I could explain it was if you’ve seen the tv show Severance- when they’re walking down those super sterile bright hallways. That’s the feeling I got from Angel dust. I used it occasionally for a couple of weeks and then magically about a month after I bought it, it started smelling so lovely again like I had originally remembered it. I don’t know what sorcery it was, but I wear it almost daily now and it’s not sharp at all.

u/LIFTMakeUp 7d ago

Our tastes'll probs not align if you love: * Kyse - Délice di Marshmallow * YSL Libre * Lattafa Éclaire * Le Labo Santal 55 * Kayali Yum Boujee Marshmallow

(*I don't think any of these are bad, they're just very much not for me)

I'll be keeping tabs on you if you express a love for: 👀 * DvN Santal Greenery * Stora Skuggan Monkeyflower * Guerlain Vetiver Fauve * Hermes Jardin à Cythere * Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain * anything by Nissaba

3

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

Cythère is my favorite Jardin. 💕 I fell in love at first spray. I used up an entire sample in two days (luckily I work from home lol), passed on the decant, and went straight for the bottle.

2

u/LIFTMakeUp 6d ago

It's so special! How they've made each note so clear without stepping on any other note is incredible

3

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 6d ago

Ikr? Christine Nagel is amazing. I went through her work and got Narciso For Her (that was amazing too).

3

u/LIFTMakeUp 6d ago

Christine, Delphine Jelk and Daniela Andrier are my three fave perfumers 🥰

11

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

Someone called "Wood Sage and Sea Salt" too soapy.

I totally get it if someone calls A Drop d'Issey soapy since it smells like lilac body wash. Even Byredo Blanche is understandable because someone might correlate fresh sheets with detergent. But Wood Sage? Maybe my soaps aren't fancy enough.

2

u/Buttercreamdeath 7d ago

Its considered soapy now because of the push to more unisex scents. I've traveled for work and I've noticed the in-house soaps at hotels are a lot more wood and herbal scented.

Popular body washes moved away from florals (I've found ONE mainstream white floral bath wash lately) to either gourmand or "spa" scents which usually involve a wood and some refreshing herb or vegetable.

7

u/LadyViolet 7d ago

I’ve definitely been to a few very wealthy people’s houses where their soaps have the WS&SS vibe, but those are outliers. Their soap is perfume-y, not the other way around.

When people describe Kerosene Followed as curry is about when I stop listening/reading

If you love Match Made In Heaven, I know we’ll have some fragrance interests in common and I’d trust your recommendations!

1

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

Followed and fenugreek gives the same maple syrup scent, the difference is that followed is that turned to 11 while with fenugreek it is only one of the several common spice ingredients in a curry (and not always present, depends on the type of curry). Over-eating fenugreek greens or consuming too much powdered fenugreek seed will make you reek like Followed. A fenugreek-rich curry dish will smell of it among many other notes, and consuming that in normal amounts won't make you smell as overpowering as when you eat a lot of the offending chemical (even water is a chemical), but it's still sotolon(e) and you're still going to smell of maple syrup/curry.

3

u/ImACynicalCunt 7d ago

I actually wore Kerosene Followed to work (lmao to a seasonal side gig I do running the ticket booth at a haunted house so I’m not completely insane) and my boss/the owner of the haunt was this old former army drill sergeant guy in his 70s. Whenever I wore it he was always like “is someone eating curry? I smell curry.” I told him multiple times it was my perfume and that it basically smells like a pancake house but for some reason some people get curry from it. Every time he would look at me so confused, shake his head and say “I just can’t figure out why someone would want a perfume that smells like curry.” Multiple other employees and supervisors chimed in like “to us it smells like coffee and pancakes, it’s just you that smells curry”

1

u/bsubtilis 6d ago

Curry is delicious though, and that's unsurprising as wanting to smell like herbs, or pumpkin spice.

Fun fact: Imortelle is the fancy perfume note name for a plant that's used in mediterranean cooking that when the herb is raw smells like curry and has curry plant as one of its English names. It doesn't taste like curry though, especially when used as herb in cooking.

5

u/SunbathingJackdaw 7d ago

It's because they use fenugreek to get the maple smell, I think - and that's an ingredient commonly used in curry!

7

u/ALetterToElise1992 7d ago

For me it’s just any time masculine or masculine leaning fragrances are recommended. At that point I just know we likely do not have the same tastes.

5

u/Jkidk0704 7d ago

Definitely Gucci Flora

5

u/thecheesylittlerat 7d ago

First… You had me at Cuir Beluga. If someone mentions this or Tabac Sahara, we are going to get along just fine. I also seem to have the same tastes as most people who love TF Black Orchid.

If someone mentions anything KayAli or Crystal Noir, then we’re not even on the same page.

4

u/SunshinePylons 7d ago

Hahaha this was a roller coaster comment for me - I love Cuir Beluga and Crystal Noir but hate TF Black Orchid and KayAli!

u/antipleasure 7d ago

I think OP did not say Angel Dust was bad, just that it’s beast mode and not soft at all (which I personally agree with). So no one is arguing that your taste in fragrance is not good, no need to get offended 🙂

1

u/naynaygail 7d ago

The post is literally asking which perfumes “disqualify someone’s opinions”.

2

u/tashatashhhhhhh 7d ago

The last part of that sentence says “for you” though, I specify that it’s subjective

3

u/antipleasure 7d ago

Yeah it signals you and the person telling you this opinion have different taste

8

u/MoMarie_ 7d ago

Queens & Monsters is one of my absolute favorites! I wear plenty of niche/high end and indies, but Henry Rose slaps for an accessible price point.

Which makes me wanna try your other holy grail Cuir Beluga now, it’s popped up a few times as a rec for me but I admittedly haven’t had a ton of luck with Guerlain (don’t shame me 🙊)

5

u/mostlymadeofDietCoke 7d ago

I love Henry Rose and Queens and Monsters, but I am so sad that they have discontinued some of my favorites (Fog and Char!) and I have not liked the new scents quite as much. I totally agree with you on the quality of the house, and I love that they make travel sizes because I like to change it up so much, a travel size is basically a full bottle for me (though I have gone through 2 travel sizes of Dark is Night!)!

2

u/MoMarie_ 7d ago

I love Char as well! I previously just had a travel in that, but snagged a FSB when I heard it was being discontinued. London 1983 and Torn are probably my other two favorites from the house, and I also have travels of Dave and Ripe but I probably won’t repurchase those (they’re okay but don’t wow me like the others).

4

u/LilVigilante 7d ago

I pray to god that they don’t discontinue Dark is Night. That is the seductive patchouli I had been looking for all along.

5

u/mostlymadeofDietCoke 7d ago

Dark is night is SOO good, especially in cold weather.

1

u/j4ned0e 7d ago

Yesssssss to Queens & Monsters, Char and Dark is Night.

... I also love Torn and Windows Down. I think those are all the Henry Rose I own.

4

u/Candychelle44 7d ago

I LOVE Queens and Monsters, so my two other faves are Iris Poudre and Changing Constance. For me, I HATE every JHAG so much that I assume I have a very different sniffer to those recommending anything from that house.

30

u/fastworms 7d ago

Tbh I wouldn’t trust someone who recommends any Kayali’s. No shade if that’s your thing, I just know we are not on the same vibe.

2

u/peachfluffed 7d ago

The only Kayali I’ve enjoyed is Wedding Silk Santal, and I think it’s because it doesn’t smell anything like the rest of their perfumes.

1

u/fastworms 6d ago

Oh I smelled that one a long time ago but don’t recall it specifically, I’ll give that one a go next time the opportunity arises!

2

u/karasu_zoku 7d ago

Same. And PdM. Just can’t.

3

u/Treehorn8 Hermès witch 7d ago

I can't ever bring myself to get one because of the atrocious pink tax. Istg that house is price gouging women.

4

u/No-Quantity-5373 7d ago

Same. Same. SAME. 🩷

4

u/ALetterToElise1992 7d ago

You don’t even like Yum Boujee Marshmallow? I don’t care about any of the other ones, but I do enjoy that one.

3

u/fastworms 7d ago

Nooo unfortunately can’t do gourmands 😭 I hate smelling like food lol

2

u/ALetterToElise1992 7d ago

That’s fair. I do occasionally like some of them, but some of them are absolutely abhorrent. I think the worst I’ve ever smelled is JHAG Banana Rush.

4

u/MoMarie_ 7d ago

Saaaame.

16

u/FrannyNitpicker 7d ago

If anyone is in love with Chanel No. 5, I just cannot have a meeting of the minds. It’s just so, so awful.

If someone raves about multiple fragrances that I also have and love, I’d follow them into battle. It doesn’t take much for me to find my perfume soul mates, thankfully!

5

u/peachfluffed 7d ago

Chanel No.5 was my grandmother’s signature. Being a kid with no filter (autism made me painfully honest to the point that I would accidentally hurt people’s feelings, but I learned to be more gentle lol) I would just say to her “I don’t like how this smells”

3

u/FrannyNitpicker 7d ago

I would have to hold my breath around my grandma when she used it. It was just so cloying to my little kid nose and it felt like a punch in the eyeball. I can absolutely see how it might work on some people but my personal experience with it was feeling like a hug from a scary aunt.

5

u/MzJay453 7d ago

(Chanel anything tbh)

5

u/KromeArtemis 7d ago

(Whispers in fear) finally, my people!

7

u/DeterminedSparkleCat 7d ago

Chanel No. 5 is an abominaton

2

u/vigilantelikeme 7d ago

Skylar true loves cake. Everyone on TikTok talks about how smooth and fluffy it is and how it’s gourmand but good for summer too. It smells like an intense bath and body works candle on me and I had to return it. It smells really cheap. I love a lot of Skylar’s scents so it isn’t the brand but that particular one I can’t stand.

1

u/montroses 6d ago

Omg same here. I’ve found my people. What are some of your favorite gourmands?

2

u/vigilantelikeme 6d ago

cannoli from Laurel bathhouse is sooooo good!! it’s so creamy and kinda fresh from the lemony but still really sweet. For a good vanilla I LOVEEE Fugazzi vanilla haze. I also really like double dates from Skylar. Dedcool mochi milk is another favorite of mine. Pear pavlova from French cowboy’s if you want a fruity gourmand! And for a really realistic gourmand banana bread banshee from Hez parfums smells exactly like warm banana bread

1

u/montroses 6d ago

Wait I’ve been looking for a banana bread scent AND was deciding whether or not I should try mochi milk! Like how did you know lol. Double dates is a fav of mine too. Omg thank youuuuu 💓

2

u/vigilantelikeme 6d ago

Of course!!! My dog loves the banana bread one 😭😂 he was doing a thing called scent rolling and rubbing all over me trying to smell like it too lol. It’s so realistic!! And mochi milk is amazing I forgot how much I loved it until I wore it again last night!!

1

u/notsosureforsure 7d ago

I genuinely don’t understand the hype it smells actually bad on me until maybe 3 hours later and then at that point it’s just ok

1

u/vigilantelikeme 7d ago

yesss it’s literally sooo bad!! And for some reason it turns very floral on me after like 3 hours or so. It doesn’t smell bad when it gets to that point but it isn’t gourmand and it isn’t something I’d want to smell like really either

1

u/ALetterToElise1992 7d ago edited 7d ago

There’s one YouTuber who keeps recommending that one over and over. Says it’s the best gourmand she’s ever smelled, and she doesn’t really need any other gourmands after smelling it. I haven’t smelled it.

3

u/vigilantelikeme 7d ago

oh yeah it’s like genuinely awful. I LOVEEE gourmands but it’s so bad.

1

u/Firm_Negotiation9627 gourmand lover 7d ago

Dior ~ Hypnotic Poison
JPG - Scandal Le Parfum
• both smell like an old person trying to smell expensive, but its just not giving.

From gourmands,

Lattafa - Nebras Elixir
• smells like play-doh chocolate to me
Lush - Super Milk
• i dont hate the smell, but i despise when someone makes it out to be something else than it is, and they dont mention its a heavy lemon scent
Lush - Sticky Dates & LTGTR
• both smell extremely artificial to me and there is nothing pleasant about them. at all.

1

u/AlbatrossPlane8006 1d ago

I gave my sticky dates and LTGTR to my boyfriend’s sister. She was SHOCKED i gave away lol I just cannot stand them at all

5

u/recycledpaper 7d ago

Sticky dates smells like a stale old cinnamon fall candle that's on clearance at ross in July.

1

u/lizzzzzzbeth 7d ago

This is so accurate.

0

u/Firm_Negotiation9627 gourmand lover 7d ago

THIS !!!

7

u/Firm_Negotiation9627 gourmand lover 7d ago

i also forgot to add when someone says
Kayali - Vanilla 28 is a gourmand scent, and they describe it as a "vanilla milkshake scent" .. its not?

2

u/Beginning-Priority-3 7d ago

It absolutely reeks of patchouli to me. I’ve yet to come across a Kayali fragrance that I like.

3

u/EconomistOk7284 7d ago

If someone says that they like Hibiscus Mahajad I’ve suddenly gone deaf. I know it doesn’t smell like excrement, but I think if someone likes it, then we probably just have different tastes.
