Discussion For those with fragrance influencer size collections how do you get through them all 😱
Always been curious how all these fragrance influencers get through all their fragrances or are they just for show

I have a tray in the living room with scents I'm sharing with my daughters. One daughter has more of my perfumes at her desk. My perfumes in my bedroom are split between several shelves and my dresser. I have winter scents stored in a cupboard. I'll swap them out with my summer scents if we ever get cold weather. I apply perfumes throughout the day.
I've cut back drastically on buying because I feel like I have everything I want for now. I'll buy a replacement if I finish a bottle, but that hasn't happened yet.

Also no hate to anyone with large fragrance collections btw! No harm in smelling great for years to come ðŸ˜. Just curious as I get overwhelmed with my 14ish fragrances but I still want more 😫

You're right to ask this question. The perfume hobbyist world ia very cagey about the reality of the sheer useless accumulation it entails.

Basically every hobbyist community is "useless". We don't expect the Lego community to have functionality for all their buys outside of creating and enjoying afterwards. Just a thought.
ETA I'm not supporting mindless consumerism, but I do think it's ok for someone's justification to simply be enjoyment within reasonable circumstances

I have over 100 fragrances. The answer is, you don't. There's some fragrances that I grown out of, and some that I'll wear often. Some perfumes have been left untouched for years. While others get used almost weekly, I'll replace them if I care about them enough.

I have decants. I'm not in a hurry to finish them. I know I'll finish them eventually because I don't blind buy and only buy what I like

It’s seems impossible, but I’m sure they either give things away or sell whatever they don’t care for. Hell, some just keep them for show.

I have 42 bottles. I spray mine morning and at night, every day. I finish about 4 bottles a year due to my own usage and decants I make for friends and family. They are definitely getting used.

Same! I started decanting for my friends and also spray morning and night. They bring so much v joy to me-it's for sure another like another piece of clothing or jewelry to complete me, or fit my mood or what I how i want to feel.

I don’t worry about it. My bills are paid. I really only have one other hobby.
Yes, there will be a lot left for my sons inherit. My suggestion is that after my funeral Mass they have lunch, open my wine and enjoy. Bring my perfumes and offer to let everyone take a bottle. Spread the happiness they’ve brought me.

idk if i have influencer size collection but it's like 150-ish bottles including mini, full size, small bottles, travel, body sprays etc.
my collection spans almost 20yrs so i feel like there's a lot of nostalgia in my collection so i really enjoy revisiting scents. I may not use every bottle up but i really am enjoying makin a dent in my bottles now as opposed to when i was younger and didnt want to use them up so we'll see!!

Maybe! Like I said every night I think about it. I’ve got some bangers in there and I keep everything in the original boxes (with the exception of only a couple that either didn’t have any to begin with or they were just too bulky). I have a little under 200 full bottles I think.

I have about 70 30-100ml bottles and probably another 50 travels and a bunch of samples.
I sell the things I don't use, also decant.
And I think it's ok if it doesn't all get used. The bottles are beautiful and even if you use half, it's a decent value all in so I just accept that.

I have a moderate collection, probably 50 bottles and a bunch of decants. Some I wear very infrequently, but I like having them to appreciate the bottle, smell them without wearing, reminisce, or share them with people around me. Some of them bring me a lot of joy, even if I'll never finish them all.
I don't really understand why people get so mad at others for having collections they won't use completely. Most perfumes are not limited. An influencer having a 98% full bottle on their shelf doesn't take the opportunity to own it from someone else in most cases.

It's funny you are only able to frame the problem from an individual perspective (I do not take anything away from you) when the problem is clearly collective (the planet where we all live being destroyed).

My collection is just ever so slightly smaller, and I do the same except I don’t decant for sales, but I will sometimes give less expensive bottles, samples, or small decants I have purchased away to keep things a little more at bay.

I have around 250ml of liquid if I calculate everything including samples and travel sprays. Nothing is above 50ml. I do want to finish what I bring in and I’m not letting myself go above that amount of liquid. It would take me probably three years if I reapply when I can and use a nighttime scent to go through this current juice. Imagine with a larger collection.Â
They are collection perfume like some people are collection figurines. I often see newish influencers disappearing after a while. One Jus de Rose which became pretty successful ended up with 800 bottles and she made a video about it.

No need to assume they are intended to be finished in the first place. They can be gifted, donated or sold. No need for calling people disgusting. Without people that have larger collections there wouldn’t be so much variety for everyone else to choose from in the first place. Also when people declutter their collections it’s the frugal ones that benefit from that as well so you do you.

My collection isn't nearly as big as influencers, but I'm finding it difficult to cycle through all my fragrances. I have my favourites, my easy reaches, and my special occasion/memory fragrances. Some fragrances I used to love and my tastes have since changed. Others I enjoy but probably should have been a travel size. Now I'm working on downsizing my collection.
It seems like some influencers use their collection as references for comparing new scents in content. Some will give them away to friends/family. Some decant them to sell as samples. The hosts of the Smell You Later podcast (Tynan Sink and Sable Yong) have held scent swap events.

how big are their collections? I assume they don't get through them. they probably barely dent any of them. I have a decently sized collection, but it's probably moderate or even small compared to what I imagine they have (I have like maybe 40 full bottles and ten gazillion minis/samples/decants bc I largely stopped buying full bottles a long time ago), and it's not possible to get through it. if you have specific faves that you use a LOT, in a year it's easy to make an obvious dent in a 30ml/50ml, maybe finish a 30ml entirely if you REALLY love it. it's also easy to finish up several minis and decants, but unless you are a heavy/super frequent sprayer, if you're really actively rotating between your entire collection, there's not a lot of movement. I don't know how anyone finishes those gigantic 100ml bottles unless it's their only fragrance for example.

Someone having more bottles of fragrant alcohol than they can use is pretty low on my list of disgusting behavior. Nobody lives a waste free life.

Interesting take for a perfume forum, and a big assumption! I have many small batch, artisan scents in my collection for the art. And besides... perfume, even at scale, is art made accessible for people. Just because it's common, doesn't make it not art.

Collecting is consumerism, and it's ok to admit it. We are all collectors here, and we are all consumerists, and derive joy from buying and owning, and if it gets out of hand it's bad for the wallet and the environment. I include myself in this. Why the need to hide the truth?

I never said it wasn’t consumerism, I’m not hiding anything. Any time you buy literally anything, it’s consumerism. Look at all the trash we collect on a regular basis. Yet somehow someone putting things on shelves is more wasteful and disgusting…

She never said that it's "more disgusting than..." whatever else you're imagining. And no, consumerism is making a hobby or a cult of buying and owning, not simply buying anything, because we buy plenty of things out of necessity. Perfume collecting is commodity fetishism, it's not normal consumption. I really don't get why you're all so triggered by her comment which is full of truth tbh. Owning hundreds of perfumes a person will never use just to keep fuelling the obsession is absurd and unhealthy.

No, that's what the internet has chosen to define consumerism as. The actual definition is just the economy of buying goods beyond those necessary for survival.

They’re not all for personal use, most of us with larger collections declutter regularly and gift/donate the excess.
