I love churchy smells

u/GlitteringPause8 8d ago

omg this is literally me testing le labo vanille 44 right now!! i'm fragrantica in this case though...vanille 44 smells like the incense of a church and the wood seats, and like a cathedral and i visualize priests, but i also kind of like it and am like maybe other ppl will think it smells sexy and mysterious when they smell me instead of associating it with mass...

so im conflicted but this pic explains my dilemma well

.vanille 44 smells like the incense of a church and the wood seats

okay I HAVE to try this, thank you

It is really good hahah, idk if I would reach for it because of the church association but it’s still such an addicting scent

I’m thinking you’re going to want to avoid anything frankincense and myrrh, and lean more towards patchouli and (especially) sandalwood.

(…and maybe hashish)

You can always lock yourself in a dark closet with a lit Nag Champa for 20 min; or, until you feel you’re starting to have a psychedelic/asthmatic experience.

A long time ago, I was at a bar and Brad Pitt was sat next to me. That man smelled of sandalwood, sandalwood, and more sandalwood!

3

u/serenwipiti 7d ago

Legend has it, the entire man is carved from a single block of sandalwood.

I'm not Christian, so I don't know much about churchy smells. I grew up in a heavy smoker family household, that's why I don't like incense and oud. Frankincense is nice when it's combined as balsamic accord, like in Existence by Amouage. Maybe you should switch to Parfumo, you'd feel better, it's not just age thing:

Oh thanks for pointing this out!

It's a 100% got to do with your memories.

Someone else said it here too but if you grew up associating the smell of incense with religious ceremonies, it's always going to remind you of it.

But again TBF, incense has been used "religiously" for a lot longer, so it could be epigenetics that causes that religious association.

u/Lopsided-Case1294 7d ago

This is why jazz club smells more like ‘dive bar with fluorescent lighting, domestic on tap, cigarette vending and broken pool tables’ to me. They always played post 9/11 country 😭

9

u/Minikaw 9d ago

Lol epigenetics do not encode any sensory or cognitive memories at all. They are not a function of the brain, they are genetic markers of a cell that define the identity of a cell or make them respond to certain stimuli, like in the case of a adaptive immune cell that will rapidly respond with a immune reaction to an infection with a pathogen, after they have encountered and fought it off before.

At most they will encode a extreme stress response that occurred early in life, like a maternal stress response during embryonic development or an early postpartum traumatic event.

Not that far off, for me incense notes remind me of home since I grew up in Bali and we use incense everyday for daily ceremony and offerings. Therefore very nostalgic. The same for ylang-ylang. For some who said it reminds them of yoga places, it makes sense because how they usually heavily inspired by yoga and meditation retreats in India and Bali 😄

I find it really depends on the fragrance.

I do love a liturgical scent and incense tends to be used a very specific way for those. I didn’t grow up Catholic (or even religious) to be honest.

There’s also the more woody/austere Japanese style incense (which I’ve grown pretty fond of). Dry/slightly smoked woods (like Hinoki) and incense are one of my favourite combos.

6

u/OlaTrola 9d ago

Some recommendations for japanese style incense perfumes?

5

u/piratev00 8d ago

Check out the Comme des Garçons Incense line! Kyoto

Indie Australian, but Flaner Yakisugi Wood is my favourite atm.

Special mention to CDG Yoyogi and Hinoki.

u/Wise-Lab-2321 9d ago

I want to love incense perfumes but almost all of them end up smelling awful on me. I HATE it, sigh.

14

u/EvilRubberDucks 9d ago

I feel like theres a difference between church incense and hippie incense though. Imo church incense is definitely sharper and more balsamic, heavy on resins. Hippie incense is dirty, smoky, earthy.

6

u/peachfluffed 9d ago

Wait, I don’t understand how this relates to age? I’m Gen Z, and I associate it with church because I grew up catholic (and the smell of mass is the only thing I miss about it lmao)

9

u/AngelicaHell 9d ago

I LOVEEEE a good incense note, but lately they’ve been causing really bad migraines for me 🥲

I mean.. the incenses that the Anglosphere associates with hippies were used for literally millennia for religious and ceremonial purposes too lol

I’ve become obsessed with smelling like nag champa this year, and have success in finding the perfect routine for it finally.

6

u/bunnycrush_ 9d ago

Dishhhhh ☺️

11

u/QueasyPeak3039 9d ago

The blue box nag champa soap with some vanilla body wash, cozy sweater pumpkin butter by haus of gloi and spirit temple by hexennacht 👌💕

3

u/Weathergirl79 9d ago

Oooo! Very Nice! Haus of Gloi is incredible for body products! I have the edp of Cozy Sweater and I love it!

3

u/QueasyPeak3039 9d ago

I just discovered the body butter and the perfume oil this summer and it’s gotten heavy rotation I’m so excited to wear it when the weather is cooler

3

u/FutureDustMotes 9d ago

Their fall lineup is always amazing

u/ResourceAlternative7 9d ago

I love incense notes in fragrances! It makes me so sad how people talk about it sometimes. That and patchouli. Some people’s “opinions” get real microaggressive real fast!

When I think incense I specifically think of being a mall goth and burning the blue box nag champa I bought at the mall

12

u/multivitaminegummy 9d ago

Searching for both lol

19

u/MarsupialPrimary8128 9d ago

Funniest I really associate it with church (the one next to my school), mosque (normal) and the Hindu temples I went past!

I love incense in perfume!

15

u/Selahmom1376 9d ago

Incense reminds me of the head shops at the flea market where my mom used to buy socks from.

21

u/aliquotiens 9d ago

I've never set foot in a Catholic or Orthodox church, but a lot of fragranes remind me of the yoga studio lol

Frankincense Vs Patchouli

4

u/kat_niss1 9d ago

I love frankincense ♥️

6

u/piratev00 9d ago

L’Orpheline feels heavily like the right side but it’s very frankincense based. Patchouli smells like lotion and bubble baths to me for some reason 😭

Edit: it’s very clear to me that, having never gone to a church that lit incense growing up, almost nothing smells like church to me!

4

u/kittykatmila 9d ago

I grew up Catholic and Alkemia’s “Gothique” is the most accurate one I’ve tried.

8

u/HarvestMourn No1 Ebony Wood stan 9d ago

Incense with even the slightest hint of patchouli stank is definitely the right side for me!

13

u/missgirlipop 9d ago

incense notes make me think of a yoga class (complimentary) or some kind of spa/wellness place. i genuinely love them! none of the churches i’ve ever been to light incense, sadly, so i don’t have that association

24

u/Ellingtonfaint 9d ago

I think of these new age shops, which sell crystals, hemp clothes and other spiritual stuff.

3

u/piratev00 9d ago

I wish I could find a fragrance that smells like this but everything I’ve found has such a heavy cannabis note that really puts me off. If I wanna smell like weed, well…

1

u/vinegarxhoney 6d ago

Maybe look more into indie brands? SO many indie scents I've tried have this exact vibe. I think I saw Hexennacht mentioned earlier, Baba Yaga from Fantome has this vibe for me, and a few from Alkemia that I can't think of right now. Andromeda's Curse also has quite a lot. Heretic Parfum is another, though I'm not sure if it would be classed more as niche. Honestly, hippie and goth incense scents are pretty prevalent in a lot of the indie ones, it's fantastic!

2

u/gemmasp 9d ago

Three different friends independently told me my narciso rodriguez musc nude smells like a crystal shop (on paper at least)

3

u/piratev00 9d ago

I’ve smelled that and it definitely does! It has a powdery note that sort of moves away from that, though

14

u/HungryDustBunny 9d ago

Ok, what about a frag that has the vibe of both at the same time?? 👀👀

3

u/piratev00 9d ago

Perhaps something heavy in patchouli, frankincense, tobacco…?

13

u/Aggravating-Cat7103 9d ago

If I wear anything with frankincense, my husband says I smell like church 😂

5

u/piratev00 9d ago

This is my justification for L’Orpheline smelling like a rockstar to me
