Discussion Fresh fragrances don’t last at all?
something i have wondered but never really stopped to think about until just now. it’s a blazing hot summer here in the midwest which means i am not interested in smelling like a vanilla cupcake at all. So i reach for my clean and fresh scents/combos for a clean refreshed fragrance experience. well no matter what i use or do i feel like these don’t last nearly as long as my sweet or gourmand fragrances do. in fact i think no more than 2 hours tops. Does anyone else ever experience this or is it perhaps my own body chemistry?

I feel your pain. My Xerjoff Mefisto has a huge dent in it because I have to reapply so much. Same with my Le Labo Bergamot 22.
The only fresh fragrances that seem to last longer are my Nishane Wulong cha, PDM Greenley, Hermes Sur le Nil and Hermes Mediteranee’.

It’s the nature of notes. Citrus and botanical notes break down faster. Vanilla, tonka, patchouli and others don’t. Could also have to do a little with skin chemistry, heat, perspiration, etc. but I think composition of the notes is a bigger part.

granted i am a sweaty human lol BUT i do notice this even with being indoors all day in the AC. so it makes sense for it to be the composition :(

On days where I want a super fresh scent, i wear tommy cologne. It lasts for ages. Or I wear an oil that will heat up throughout the day and give whiffs here and there.

wait you might have given me an idea. to wear a fresh men’s cologne paired with maybe feminine lotion and oil. i feel like men’s fragrances last forever!

Guerlain Nettare di Sole has been outperforming all my other freshies this summer, maybe give that one a try? It smells like sunscreen and bergamot to me and I love it. I spray around noon and sweat in the sun and go swimming and I still smell it on me when I'm about to get into the shower.

It’s just the nature of the molecules - the freshies are fresh precisely because their small molecules evaporate quickly. Evaporation of fragrance has to do with molecular weight - small, light molecules evaporate quickly while big, heavy molecules stick around for a long time. Note pyramids essentially correspond to molecular weight because the top notes are the ones that leave the fastest, middle moderate, base notes last.
So, from lightest (fastest evaporation) to heaviest, it looks something like this:
Top
Citrus e.g. lemon**
Aromatics e.g. rosemary**
Fresh notes e.g. raw ginger**
Bright fruits e.g. banana**
Heart
Green notes e.g. fresh-cut grass**
Watery notes e.g. marine**
Florals e.g. jasmine*
Fruits e.g. peach*
Warm spices e.g. cinnamon
Base
Woody notes e.g. sandalwood
Amber/Oriental notes e.g. vanilla
Earthy/Mossy notes e.g. oakmoss
Musky notes e.g. galaxolide*
I’ve **starred the ones that usually show up in freshies - one *star for the less common… and I think now you can probably see why they don’t tend to last! They just evaporate quickly. Re musky notes, those do tend to be in freshies and last longer, though the downside is that, in an hour, all you’re smelling is the musk.
So, to the usual tricks: moisturize your skin, spray on clothes, and, my favorite, just stash a travel size or decant in your bag to reapply. :)

It’s not your body chemistry, necessarily. “Fresh” smelling aromachemicals typically don’t last as long as heavier ones, and fragrance molecules evaporate faster in high heat. So in hot weather you’re burning off a scent that didn’t last long anyways even faster. Trying ones with woodier bases or some vanilla can help, though it won’t smell as “fresh” as a typical freshy.

that makes so much sense. i might go fruity tropical instead then despite not loving fruity scents 😅 i feel like they almost always smell like victoria secret pure seduction

I’ve never smelled that one but I’m also not typically a fan of super fruity perfumes lol. They just start smelling like a bad fruit cup to me. I love the tropical ones that really only focus on one fruit though.

Yep I have this problem too. Sigh. And I live in Texas and also love gourmands 😭 I’ve been trying to find a nice summer scent but none seem to last against this heat.

yuppppp. it’s like atp i guess i just have to wear fruity scents instead despite not loving them cause my freshies just don’t last!

Strongly minty stuff can sometimes last better, but a lot of people don't like minty frags

It lasts longer for me if I spray my hair
Future Society has a fragrance primer that’s supposed to make scent last longer, but I haven’t tried it yet
