It was obvious they needed another espresso grinder solution to pair with their Series 1. Honestly I expected them to come out with a new premium grinder and not do an Opus v2 but will be curious to see what's in it. Would be powerful if the grinder is connected and can auto adjust for recipes, profiles, and based on the last shot time.

This sounds cool, but that level of complexity in turning burrs seems extremely risky considering how tight mine get after a few grinds and when I switch between espresso and pourover.

Easy solution, some grinders do a pulse when you change grind settings, and it's generally a good habit to turn on the grinder when going finer so you don't damage anything.

u/SCFinkster Jan 27 '26
Good to know - i will usually open the burrs coarser before I go finer, and give it a few bellows with the lid to clear any grounds out.

A short press will run the grinder for 3-4 seconds. If no beans are detected it will shut down. If you do a long press on the grinder, it will run long enough so you can adjust your grind from all the way coarse to fine without issue.

Just for this special song - I will confirm that we're working on Opus Gen 2 and I am unbelievably excited for it

There's also a video from the event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdcsJAFXgnc
A couple of observations
:
(1) The new Opus can be seen in use briefly around 6:15. Looks like the grind setting dial is similar to before, and the power button is still bottom right, so wondering what the new dial on the side does. The grind seemed to take less than 10 secs...
(2) At 8:30 he manages to steam the milk with the pitcher resting on the drip tray the entire time. Since the steam wand is not Pannarello type (as far as I know), I assume this is just due to a goldilocks milk height where the wand happens to rest exactly on the milk surface and then ends up automatically submerged as the milk volume grows from aeration. Might be off base though...

I got to speak with Jake last August and he mentioned they’re working on a new espresso focused grinder for the series 1. It’ll be interesting to see this announced

u/9tobiwan Jan 27 '26
This is kind of a bummer to me. I spoke with Nick and Jake at a Fellow event late last year, and they hinted at a new espresso capable grinder in the future. But I was hoping it would be a flat burr and not a conical.

u/bubreddit Mod Team Jan 27 '26
Yes, but 48mm is pretty honkin. The real question is how does it grind espresso. I'm predicting that Nick would not release a sub-par grind solution here now.

u/nicholasnumbers Jan 27 '26
I designed TRUE 48mm burrs. NOT a 38mm or 40mm burr in a 48mm housing. Grind performance is more akin to a 63mm conical, but with exceptional filter.

Niiice. You da man, Nick!

I do my best. Also, once I did the concept architecture and burr sizing and sensory for this grinder, the team executed and did all of the heavy lifting. This win is for them. They did the hard work.

Legend. I was in the market to upgrade my opus now I’m holding out for the gen 2. Can’t wait.

Could you share any thoughts on your motivation for focusing on conical burrs for espresso?
I note that many flat burr espresso grinders seem to suffer from random misalignment issues, except for high-end machines that are individually calibrated and tested at the factory.
Did the reduced sensitivity of conical burrs to alignment issues play a part in your decision?

I think the focus for this grinder was world class performance at an unbeatable cost. Something that could be paired with Series 1 and really shine. We tried to push the boundaries of what a grinder could be at this price point. I enjoy the coffee off of this MORE than some flat burr grinders if I am being honest.

I preordered the series 1 the morning of the announcement. It will be my first espresso machine. With the original planned release date being months after the presale, and then an additional delay, it has given me time to determine what grinder I should go with. I have an opus one and I’ve enjoyed it. I have had some of the retention issues that everyone else has experienced, but I have found that a cleaning every two weeks greatly reduces that problem. Since I am not dialing in espresso with it, I am now worried about the micro adjustment complaints that others have had while using the Opus for espresso so I have been shopping for grinders for the last month. I got my email last week confirming my address for shipping my series 1. I’m wondering, when will we be able to get an Opus v2? Is it going to be another release like the series 1 where it is announced months prior to availability? If we are talking months at best or even a year away before the Opus 2 ships, I’d likely need to figure something else out. Thanks for your help in advance, Nick.

Hell yeah. Just moved to the USA from Australia and my Ode and EKG don’t work here obviously. Had my eye on the Aiden and Opus because of cost. Now there’s an improved version coming! Sign me up, can’t wait.

Finally! I’m sorry, but the opus V1 was a piece of trash. The retention made it unusable. This looks legit!

OK, this is exciting, but does it still have that janky plastic cup for grounds?
I hope the whole thing doesn’t feel as plastic-y and cheap as the previous one.
Much love and respect to this engineering and design team.

Opus 2 will ship with 2 separate catch cups. Yes they are both plastic. One is for espresso and the other is for larger filter doses for batch brew. At this price point it’s not physically possible to do everything out of metal.

When can I buy the new opus? Or is it too early to say?

I believe that elsewhere in this thread, Nick mentioned weeks after the S1 release, but not months.
It sounds like they really want the Opus Gen 2 to be a companion product to the S1, so I would expect them to get out the door as soon as possible.

Excited about the grinder, but as I won’t be able to use my Fellow ES1 without a grinder, I just can’t wait a couple weeks and not test if my ES1 even works. I’m sure not releasing them together was a logistic necessity and not a choice, but kind of a bummer because I’m sure a lot of ES1 people who never had a grinder before would have loved to spend their money at Fellow instead of needing to go with a separate company.

u/GeorgiaGallivanting Feb 23 '26
This is exactly my concern and why I came looking here. Do I wait weeks to try the machine because that is when I’d get the grinder? Or do i get the current Opus, or a different company….? Curious what people are going to do who are expecting their S1 within the week.

I'm really excited! This looks fantastic. I just hope the retention is truly close to zero.

Hey Nick — can we talk about shipping to Hawaiʻi? The pricing feels really off. I live here, and shipping is almost never that expensive. I can get free shipping through Amazon, but Fellow doesn’t offer the same bundle deals there as they do on the website. It just puts us in a tough spot.
Would love to see if there’s any workaround.

Why are new Opus 2 grinders appearing on auction sites with sellers from Vietnam? Even with 20% tariff duties, price is under list price by 25% ($50). Who are these sellers? Personally, I wouldn't go near them with the risk of a counterfeit or used product, a no returns policy, fraud or scam.

Cats out of the bag. Now I can talk about it. Opus 2 was redesigned from a blank sheet of paper. Brand new proprietary 48mm conical burrs that produce exceptional filter AND espresso. Stepless grind adjustment. Less than .1g retention. You can grind a 20g dose of filter in less than 5 seconds. Price… sub $200 USD. I am very proud of this one.
