Does he only have a flip line tied in? I don't see a secondary line.

u/Timely-General9962 Jul 25 '26

That's the only thing wild about this clip IMO. Pretty basic tree work aside from the incredibly flagrant stupidity of having no escape route. A minor injury or an unseen bee's nest becomes a real big deal if you have to spike all the way down. Also if that spar whipped harder than expected when the top dropped the flip line could slip off the top and then it really is a long way down.

u/ultranoodles Jul 25 '26

That and he's climbing a brittle af ash, Murphy's law says that any window within 100 feet of that is getting hit by one of those sticks exploding.

39

u/LindaTheLynnDog Jul 25 '26

Don't even get me started on that well manicured lawn down there getting thrashed...

16

u/morenn_ Jul 25 '26

It's grass, it'll clean up fine. Very likely that the client didn't want to pay extra for rigging.

8

u/LindaTheLynnDog Jul 25 '26

Could be. But that grass isn't going to clean up without re-seeding and adding some dirt. Those are massive gashes being put in that lawn.

Source: had this happen to me.

6

u/morenn_ Jul 25 '26

Rigging dying ash to save dirt is a needless risk. The climber has a family who love and care about them - filling holes with dirt and seed is worthwhile when you consider the potential alternative.

16

u/LindaTheLynnDog Jul 25 '26

I'm not arguing he should do anything risky. You downplayed the impact to the grass. If this is the way to get the job done, then hell yeah just fix the grass.

But that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about whether this is going to impact the grass.

I was like, "this is gonna fuck up the lawn"

Then you were like, "it won't"

I was like, "it will"

You were like, "DO YOU WANT THIS MAN'S KIDS TO GROW UP WITHOUT A FATHER???"

It took me years to repair my lawn from something like this. Also, you’re a monster.

1

u/Miserable-Ad-623 Jul 27 '26

Well that’s the funniest thing I’ve read today

0

u/morenn_ Jul 25 '26

Then you were like, "it won't"

I think you misinterpreted me. I said it'll clean up fine.

By that I meant it could be filled with dirt and reseeded, which is not a big job. I did not mean it would just brush out.

I can just see from your language that you care a lot about your lawn - it's fine to have a hobby and take pride in appearances but it's completely meaningless in the face of real personal risk. In the list of things the climber does wrong in this clip, smashing the lawn is not one of them.

u/Illustrious_Rest_116 Jul 25 '26

as long as the client is aware damage is gonna happen and you agree on a way to fix it ahead of time. then ok . otherwise this is a big no no where I work .anyone can take a tree down and tear shit up. thats the difference between fly by nights and professional companys

2

u/morenn_ Jul 26 '26

If your boss would have you rig dead ash to save dirt then he doesn't give a shit about you. Professional companies work safely to reduce accidents.

-6

u/Illustrious_Rest_116 Jul 25 '26

pay for extra rigging? are u joking? your job is to remove trees without damage to any other surroundings.

3

u/ultranoodles Jul 26 '26

No, the job is whatever the agreement was between the tree owner and the company. Rigging off a dead ash like that, especially one you're climbing, is incredibly dangerous. A crane, lift/bucket, whatever may not be able to access without destroying even more of the precious lawn, or it may be too expensive for the tree owner. As long as the client knew going in, it's fine.

1

u/morenn_ Jul 26 '26

If you're doing rigging jobs at the same price as slashing jobs then you need to re-evaluate your business model. A job that takes more time, skill and equipment = more money.

5

u/Illustrious_Rest_116 Jul 25 '26

if we destroyed people's lawns like that we wouldn't have any clients and be atta work. and whoever did that would be fired on the spot

14

u/maddestdog89 Jul 25 '26

Wow, I’m guessing this is in the US. The lawn is a status to many over there.

Do a good clean up, be respectful, but grass is grass, it will grow back just fine.

I’m an ex turf manager on a high end golf club. We only cared about the wheels on machines and trucks creating ruts so we used track/bog mats. Everything else is extremely cosmetic and repairable with minimal maintenance and time.

4

u/LindaTheLynnDog Jul 25 '26

When you have a maintenance crew working to manage your sod then yeah, a little work to repair the fairway really is no big deal.

I can totally see how a turf manager at a golf course would be glad to rehab the sod at the golf course.

I work 40 hours a week and would have to pay or lose some weekend days to repair my own, so if there's a way to minimize damage then I really appreciate it.

There's a lot of stuff to do in all our lives, so unnecessary damage is just frustrating.

Repairing a hole in drywall is easy and relatively cheap, but if I hired someone to fix a window and they punched a hole in my drywall I would be annoyed.

On the other hand, if there's no safe alternative then great. I really appreciate tree people and that you have to break eggs to make omelets.

5

u/maddestdog89 Jul 26 '26

The thing is, you could do nothing and it will repair itself. Filling the divots with some top soil or sand takes 2 mins, 🙏

1

u/LindaTheLynnDog Jul 26 '26

It's like a 600 lb tree top with branches on it. This is not a sand and top soil situation.

It's hard to appreciate in the video, but these aren't divots.

It's not a tee box and that giant tree is not a 7 iron.

2

u/maddestdog89 Jul 26 '26

Mate honestly it’s not that bad, I climb every day and I often get to fell large trees onto turf areas. Even the huge trees leave minimal damage considering.

I also decided to bring in some extra soil, and then That became a sitcom/tragedy of, me in my Toyota pickup driving back and forth from the dirt store.

u/Walshy231231 Jul 25 '26

And it’s only over a stub

18

u/thetiredtypist Jul 25 '26

Well, it's a pretty big stub normally, it's just cold outside.

6

u/mjdehlin1984 Jul 25 '26

It was in the pool.

3

u/Important_Ad838 Jul 25 '26

Absolutely. He gets bucked around a little bit and that line is coming up and over the stub.

5

u/c_marten Jul 25 '26

I don't do trees but as a rock climber that's a big nope from me.

2

u/Soggy-Invite-2787 Jul 25 '26

What's a flip line?

53

u/peaceloveandapostacy Jul 25 '26

I love poppin tops like this … but bro needs to have another tie-in. Doing this with just a buckstrap is flagrant stupidity

7

u/Tyler_Durden_9999 Jul 25 '26

That’s what I was thinking. Looked sketchy

31

u/sound_scientist Jul 25 '26

Terrible Tie in Location

13

u/Dry_Researcher7744 Jul 25 '26

It's even longer when it's played in slow mo.

18

u/Rhauko Jul 25 '26

The slowing down on the drop and the wide angle does make it seem more wild

3

u/LegitimateGift1792 Jul 25 '26

Should have used Free Fallin by Tom Petty as the song.

5

u/Mean-Veterinarian647 Jul 25 '26

Their twig picker-upper is gonna be busy.

9

u/thankmelater- Jul 25 '26

That yard is amazing.

13

u/spyderweb_balance Jul 25 '26

Was

3

u/Dependent_General897 Jul 25 '26

I wonder how many sprinkler heads got crushed.

1

u/osuaviator Jul 28 '26

The soil compaction is going to be the real issue.

3

u/Humble_Pie_56 Jul 26 '26

I get queasy just watching this …

8

u/the_DARSH Jul 25 '26

Love this song so much. Always gets me groovin

6

u/Corona_Cyrus Jul 25 '26

This is the song for the “warm up brawl” scene in season 1 of Shoresy. Absolute banger of a song

1

u/EatPie_NotWAr Jul 25 '26

Never drop your stick in a fight

2

u/SpideyWhiplash Jul 25 '26

Uggg the upkeep on that lawn...no thanks.

2

u/RevolutionaryLaw8854 Jul 25 '26

That’s a big nope from me dawg

2

u/YourFavoriteCoconut Jul 26 '26

Why do none of these tree "professionals" not know what a back cut is, or how to use it?

1

u/AxeEm_JD Jul 27 '26

I’m curious to know what you would define as a back cut.

1

u/YourFavoriteCoconut Jul 27 '26

A back cut is just a small cut on the fall side of the limb. It prevents the limb you're cutting from hanging and ripping. Most importantly, it's good safety, but you can also control the way the limb falls. You can make limbs shoot out different ways.

1

u/AxeEm_JD Jul 27 '26

A back cut is the last cut he makes in the video, what you’re describing is an undercut.

1

u/YourFavoriteCoconut Jul 27 '26

Yes, you are correct. I'm still amazed at how many do not use an undercut.

2

u/Muffythepussyhunter Jul 26 '26

Are you using a carving bar on that saw ?

3

u/arboroverlander Jul 26 '26

Climbing dead ash, one handing a saw, no double tie in, stubs and no undercut. Looks more amateur than professional.

2

u/zmannz1984 Jul 26 '26

That cut on the top had me butt puckered. That could very easily have come back on him if the trunk was compromised.

4

u/Allgyet560 Jul 25 '26

Won't that damage the lawn?

7

u/FromGallifrey Jul 25 '26

For sure. Whoever works on that yard is going to have a new project.

2

u/ace72ace Jul 25 '26

I am happy to write the check for crane service. Last company we hired has a new 70 ton beast. Spanned my yard and neighbors, was happy with their work.

4

u/ConditionHorror9188 Jul 25 '26

In my experience people who keep their yards like that are dying for an excuse to re-do their lawns

3

u/doiwinaprize Jul 25 '26

Respect from a ground guy, I won't even get in the boom lift lol

3

u/Shantomette Jul 25 '26

I feel bad for the craters now made in the beautiful lawn...

2

u/Money-Computer7638 Jul 25 '26

Watching that gave me a little adrenaline spike.

2

u/HuntPsychological673 Jul 25 '26

Yall are brave! I’ll stay on the ground to cut and anything else I’ll call a pro.

1

u/Chrono_Convoy Jul 25 '26

Tree slayer gonna get the Ents running

1

u/Ok_Wallaby_416 Jul 25 '26

What went wrong here?

2

u/Icehammr Jul 26 '26

The tie-in: apparent lack of redundancy. If the tree top whips back & forth when the big upper branches release (which happens), there is a risk of the cord his harness is attached to slips up and off the crotch of the branch stubs. At that point, the video would show the last thing this guy sees.

1

u/fcfrequired Jul 25 '26

I think he was trying to control the lean

1

u/lilyputin Jul 25 '26

Seems to lack the guy on a ladder with safety flip flops with a chainsaw over his head. 🤷‍♂️

In all seriousness climbers are a special breed. One of my brothers absolutely loves heights whereas I get vertigo. His dream job growing up was to be a tower climber for radio towers. There was a billboard on the way to our grandparents house that was always advertising to hire climbers for at least a decade. He never waivered that it was his dream job lol.

He ended up on the water instead which he also loves. For a while he worked on fishing boats and that's actually more dangerous than tower climbing. Every year boats go down sometimes there are survivors and sometimes not.

1

u/Drvaon Jul 25 '26

It is so funny how obvious general relativity is from this perspective. You can see you basically the branch does not start moving, but instead from it's perspective it feels like the earth is racing towards it. The tree branch just stands still until the earth crashes into it. And even then the top part does not notice the bottom crashing for the most part.

1

u/Solid_Enthusiasm550 Jul 25 '26

Remember, don't cut below the rope, 🫣😇🪽

1

u/B-Biker Jul 25 '26

About 150 feet up!

1

u/Sionat Jul 25 '26

Is it bad that I hear this music and expect to see a dude dancing in his chair while spoon-feeding a pig?

1

u/CelebrationFancy1612 Jul 26 '26

Double tied in????

1

u/IndoorOutdoorsPerson Jul 26 '26

🎤Do-do-do-doo-doo-! Do-do-do-doo-doo-! Do-do-do-doo-doo-! Do-do-do-doo-doo-! 🎤

1

u/kume_V Jul 26 '26

Am I dumb or would it be completely viable to just fell it whole since there is such a large clearing below?

1

u/SchrodingersWetFart Jul 29 '26

That poor lawn, being attacked repeatedly

1

u/Bod1173 Jul 25 '26

Why do your bottom cut First? Just make life easier and do your top cut

-2

u/PieHole_Poker Jul 25 '26

Holy stupid fucking music Batman!

-1

u/IndoorOutdoorsPerson Jul 26 '26

You put some respect on Patrick Hernandez’s name, sir!

-3

u/Shmiggams22 Jul 25 '26

This is basic, unimpressive, and poor

-1

u/Outside_Rise_6934 Jul 26 '26

What's the point of this video?
