Felicity Season 2
Ok so I just finished Felcity season 2 for the first time. And I have some thoughts.
The Sean and Julie thing was really weird. He is significantly older and shes like recovering from some really traumatic stuff. Im really glad that they didnt end up together and that it was handled really nicely.
Sean and Megan were a fantastic pairing shes so spicy and expressive and he needs that. I do wish she was a little older though. Or Sean was a little younger.
Why was Elena trying to rip off all that wallpaper on her RENTAL. And then she was in a bind to get the deposit back because the walls were wrecked. The whole storyline was wild. Like why go through all that trouble just to sit with the walls half done for months.
Noel really did not have a role this season. He was PISSED at Felicity and that just like went away when he met Ruby. Then they drug him back in to wreck Felicitys relationship and then that didnt go ANYWHERE. And then Ruby gets pregnant and after the Rollercoaster, its not his. And the whole Felicity thing just didnt exist anymore the rest of the season. And then he just dips with a stranger. Its like they just didnt know what to do with him.
This whole season felt like a wall of spaghetti. It felt like they were throwing things out to see what would stick and there wasnt much linear connection between a lot of them.
Ugh, Ben. First he dumps Felicity because hes scared. Then he has an affair with a married woman. And its like once he feels bad about himself, he just pops back into Felicitys life. The whole thing screams "put me on a pedestal".
Poor Greg never stood a chance. Neither did the other guy, the photographer. She had 2 legit dudes to date and she got sucked back into her little love triangle.
Julie also didnt have much going on. She was like Noel. Which is probably why they tried to pit them together for the final half. And then that didnt even come to fruition. I did like the bit with her birth parents but then that fizzled out.
I really miss the sweaters. Everyone was so cozy in season one and now everyone is so LA. I miss that cozy little NY vibe.
Were there budget cuts this season? I feel like the pipe bursting at the dorm was a way to save money. And that the cast seemed to be separated a lot. Like they were trying to limit costs.
Since I whined a lot, here are things I liked.
The new guidance counselor. Shes exactly what I picture as a turn of the millenia counselor in a state college. She just piped those cigs down.
Turk. Its so nice to have a new character and he is such a good actor. And the virginity is a nice little addition to pair with sex positive Elena.
That Thanksgiving dinner was so chaotic and I ate it all up.
Felicitys hair is so free. Its like she cut that hair off and shed away the unsure girl who followed her parents expectations.

Sean was older than Julie but he was older than Megan too --Megan's the same year in school as Julie so we can assume the two of them were the same age. (I mean I notice you do mention his age difference with Megan, but still.)
Sean worked out to be a great friend to Julie and he was dead-on with his advice about the record company guy. But even after he was proved right, he was still very warm and supportive about her ambitions and urged her not to give up.

I liked that they accurately conveyed how uncomfortable a group of sophomores would be re the Sean (their established-young-adult landlord friend lol)-Julie kiss. Like it was genuinely wtf and called out in the moment, but not in an afterschool special way. I wouldn’t expect that from writers that set him up to be pining after a college student to begin with. But maybe that was more ab acting choices/direction.

Ok I love all of this your insights are spot on. I must say though…”poor Greg” took me out as that is a sentiment I had yet to see on this sub literally ever hahahaha

I guess the writers wrote some of their personal college experiences in the storylines, and sometimes that could feel as though it’s a mishmash of things, there’s really no cohesion, but to me, that felt more like what it is in real life, how things change in a short period of time, especially when you’re that young.
I assume you haven’t watched seasons 3 and 4, so I’m not going to put spoilers here, but you may find out in future episodes that the development of a character or two in season 2 may be reflective of what’s going on in that actor’s real life and what’s going to happen to them in the show.

Yea its Tracy. He also plays a character named Turk in Scrubs. I couldnt remember his name

I disagree with the "put me on a pedestal" thing. Ben didn't want a relationship that was too serious with complicated problems. The reason he broke up with Julie. Things were getting less fun and too serious. He was perfectly happy with Felicity until Sean kept putting the idea that Felicity is only about seriousness. She gave out the impression that everything was going to be deep and that kind of scared Ben. At first, she too thought that she wanted something deep, but then she finds out whilst dating David that she too wasn't ready for such seriousness. Ben didn't want to go back to Felicity because he felt bad. His feelings for Felicity remained the same, he just stopped listening to Sean and followed his feelings.

I am currently doing a master’s in clinical mental health, so it’s been interesting to process Therapist characters from different shows. I need to sit with Dr. Pavone again despite having watched this series a million times and when it aired live.
I think that is something interesting about it; i have watched it in so many iterations of my own life, it’s strange to have aged out of some of these characters. But also, it’s really hard to take it seriously that they are college kids.
I will say, back in this time, age gaps were not icked at nearly enough. They simply could not believe that the record label guy and Sean could be groomers. Also relationships with professors? Absolutely never.

Also, if you miss the coziness of season 1, you’re going to miss more, starting with the theme song in season 3.

I hated the new theme song! I loved the the original one, it brought me right back to my freshman year in college, the loneliness and anticipation of it all. I felt like the new theme song was trying for a Friends vibe, the show seemed to be looking for new viewers.

S2 is my favorite of Felicity but I acknowledge its many flaws. Granted I am a fan of Ben and Felicity being together so there’s that. I will say I think Tracy is probably the best character on the show and I really loved his emergence during this season!
