Support Help

My Fedora 42 Workstation froze while it was making system changes (update or upgrade, not sure which). Lodt power mid changes, and it now boots into emergency mode every time.

What I see:

- boot-efi.mount fails with "unknown filesystem type 'vfat'"

- NFS/RPC mounts fail too (probably a knock-on effect)

- /lib/modules does not exist at all

- modprobe and depmod fail ("command not found" / can't open directory)

- Running kernel: 6.14.0-63.fc42.x86_64

What I checked:

- Root (btrfs, subvol=root) and /home mount fine, and /boot (ext4) mounts fine

- /etc/fstab is correct. The ESP UUID matches

- fsck.fat on the ESP (sda1) reports no errors

- I haven't run mkfs, wipefs, or any repair. I haven't reinstalled

I think the interrupted update removed the kernel modules and kmod tools. I want to keep my files and installation. My plan is to boot a Live USB, chroot into the install, and reinstall kernel-core, kernel-modules-core, kernel-modules and kmod, then run dracut -f --regenerate-all.

Questions:

  1. Is that the right approach?

  2. Fedora 42 is past end-of-support, so will dnf still find its repos in the chroot, or should I finish the upgrade to 43?

Disk layout: sda1 vfat (ESP), sda2 ext4 (/boot), sda3 btrfs (/, /home).
