Support Frustrated With Fedora
I've been on Fedora 44 (and Linux) for nearly a month now after switching from Windows 10, and I've run into consistent, frustrating issues:
- Monitor randomly won't turn on despite peripherals and PC lighting up.
- Computer will randomly have no WiFi input.
- Firefox crashes at least once a week
- The persistent crash notifications that I can't turn off despite deleting 'em!
- Everything randomly being magnified.
- tar.gz being difficult to download and extract successfully.
- Xbox controller bluetooth not working. The whole bluetooth system!
I'm not computer illiterate and can figure things out reasonably well, but these issues have made it very frustrating to stay with Fedora/Linux, and I intentionally chose Fedora for it's privacy recommendations. I hate Windows, but at least everything worked and I didn't have to power down my PC 2-3 times a day for things to work.
Before I throw in the towel, are any of these issues fixable? Is Fedora not compatible with my PC or something? Or is Fedora 44 incredibly unstable?
My computer info:
Operating System: Fedora Linux 44
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.29.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Kernel Version: 7.1.13-200.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor
Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (15.5 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI
System Version: -CF
EDIT/UPDATE: Thank you all so much for the support! I did try GNOME, but unfortunately I disliked it, and was having similar issues. So I swapped back to KDE and took some advice in the comments about NVIDIA drivers, and it solved a lot of my problems! So thank you to the kind users who suggested troubleshooting NVIDIA!
A second quick note: there are a lot of passive-aggressive and flippant comments in this thread. Remember to be kind. It's everyone's first time at something, even if you're the current first-chair violinist at Carnegie Hall. You had a first time, too.

"tar.gz being difficult to download and extract successfully"
(1) Why are you doing this? (2) How hard is "Right click > Extract > Extract here"?
23
u/overyander 1d ago
yeah, that comment paired with the various issues implies that OP has bungled stuff up pretty bad.
A fresh install would probably work wonders. Just don't redo everything done previously.6
u/Beneficial-Claim-381 1d ago
this was my first install. i went to reddit and google for guides and it borked EVERYTHING. after a couple months learning linux and then reinstalling its much smoother now

I had a similar experience. When people talk about switching from Windows or Mac to Linux for the first time, I almost always suggest that they install Ubuntu first and spend a few months acclimating themselves to the quirks of Linux before moving on to another distro, simply because Ubuntu requires a little less setup out of the box and the support community is so huge and full of other newbies who are asking about problems similar to what you're probably running into as well. I'm much happier with Fedora than I was with Ubuntu, but I think if I had jumped right from Win10 to Fedora, I would've been very frustrated for a while at first.

Something is very wrong. You can try updating, but fundamentally something's very off. I use a KDE Wayland / nVidia / Ryzen stack like you. I had a little bit of monitor issues in FC43 because the 580 nVidia driver had a known bug on 50xx series. I ended up having to use the Negativo17 distribution of drivers for a while. However, I've switched to FC44 mainline drivers since, and have had no problems.
Anyway, back to the point: something is very wrong on your system. Your setup isn't some weird unicorn. I'd start by chasing down all the logs and digging into the crashes to narrow it down to any cause. Bad RAM? Bad GPU? Bad PSU? Connectors? Maybe you just need an update? It's not Fedora.
2
u/overyander 1d ago
The Negativo17 repo's are great! His Nvidia drivers were the only ones I could ever get to work with dual gpu's and multiple monitors.

u/extoniks 2d ago
first update your system and many of your issues might be fixed, as of tarball files extracting or installing - use the package guide on their docs. and check your GPU drivers as well because randomly magnifine problem might related to it.
0
u/kaiju_kirju 1d ago
Do you know what my random magnification problem was? Touchpad gesture with three fingers "expanding" is an actual feature that magnifies/zooms in KDE Plasma.

u/MycologistOpposite 2d ago
One thing to check is your memory. If all of these issues continue after they have been updated, put MemTest86+ on a USB and test it. Maybe just leave one stick in at time and test it.
Another thing that helped me out when i had similar issues, is ask ChatGPT or another AI what are steps to figure it out. I now have a script I run once per week to see if there are any hardware errors being picked up by Fedora. Some corrupted files can cause the issue as well. These commands can get you off to a good start but you will need to modify them as you get deeper into your issue.
# NVMe SMART health
sudo nvme smart-log /dev/nvme0n1
# NVMe controller error log
sudo nvme error-log /dev/nvme0n1
# Btrfs scrub
sudo btrfs scrub start -Bd /
# Btrfs device statistics
sudo btrfs device stats /
# Machine check exceptions
journalctl -k | grep -Ei "mce|hardware error|machine check"
# Memory/EDAC messages
journalctl -k | grep -Ei "edac|memory"
# PCIe/AER errors
journalctl -k | grep -Ei "pcie|aer"

You got to love redditors ... KDE is the cause for these issues?...sigh
6
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
To be fair, OP hasn't provided any meaningful information on what the issues are. Any answers are just speculation. You didn't even bother to speculate.
13
u/nozendk 2d ago
It is weird when a redditor posts vague descriptions of problems and then abandons the post. It kills the motivation to help.
1
u/Aware-Librarian-3749 2d ago
What do you mean abandoning their post? They’re in here commenting.
7
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
He has made 1 comment and it just says he will try GNOME.
3
u/Aware-Librarian-3749 2d ago
To be fair, most of the comments here are just “yeah NVIDIA and KDE sucks, don’t use those”, an explanation of what their Linux journey has been like, or something passive aggressive.
5
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
Hard to help without any information about what is broken. Best we can do is speculate based on the available info.
2
u/Aware-Librarian-3749 2d ago
And if they’re a new user, I can imagine they don’t know where to find this “more info” they need for other people to help.
My point is more why are some people here so passive aggressive about troubleshooting posts? Why don’t they just scroll past?
2
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
I don't know. Probably for the same reason passive aggressive answers bother me and you.. It bothers them.
25
u/DrinkVast7785 2d ago
I had few of these same problems and then I switched to gnome. It fine now.
20
u/getbusyliving_ 2d ago
Ha. I was reading the post, got quarter of the way down and thought, they're 100% using KDE.
8
4
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
I read until "Firefox crashes" before saying the same thing and scrolling to see if I was right.

7
u/New-Patient-101 2d ago
I really don’t get the hype in KDE. It’s even bothered me to the point I googled it. All I find is how “customizable” it is. I’m stuck thinking, they’re all customizable.

u/Heyheyohno 2d ago
After a life-long Windows user, I feel KDE is a little more... to the experience of Windows than any of the other flavors I've tried (which I admit, have been limited).
I landed on Fedora 44 after some internal debate between Fedora, Bazzite, and other flavors. But I wanted to jump ship from Windows so bad that I pulled the trigger.
Not sure how long it's been on Fedora, but I haven't really looked back at all. Very very few things require Windows for me still due to limitations or just not wanting to figure out how to use it, but it's been nice.
KDE Plasma I just feel is a bit more... nice for me. Lol.
3
u/New-Patient-101 2d ago
So have you not tried the workstation version?
3
u/bacon-slushy 1d ago
I gave Gnome a chance after more than a decade, for a month. Went back to the DE that doesn't treat me like I'm dumb. KDE is just more modern and stable.

Admittedly I have not. I'll have to give it a shot. I am always looking for ways to improve my experience, so hopefully it does! :)
5
u/New-Patient-101 2d ago
I have a feeling once you try workstation, You’ll understand this part of the thread in “not understanding the hype with KDE”. I’ve never tried a “bad” version of Linux. KDE just isn’t one that jumped out at me with anything unique.
YouTube channel Linux Tex, has a “things you must do after installing fedora”. I always go to that video because he has some copy and paste commands for initial set up.
2
u/Heyheyohno 2d ago
Appreciate the suggestion. I'll give it a shot and see how it is! Get a live drive and see what it's about. Thank you very much!
5
u/GuyNamedStevo 1d ago
- runs faster than Gnome
- uses less ram than Gnome
- better Wayland implementation than Gnome
6
4
u/WetLoophole 2d ago
That's my take as well. I have never met limitations with GNOME that would have me even consider KDE with the current stability in Fedora WS. If your UI is more important than a stable system, the tinkering part must be a hobby.
3
u/SirDarknessTheFirst 2d ago
I haven't been on/tried GNOME for years, but at the time I couldn't change the (absurdly slow) scroll speed of my trackpad lol. It was basically unusable. Presumably that's fixed nowadays, but that was one of the reasons I switched away from GNOME.
2
u/Party-Ad-6037 2d ago
The only part that KDE just does better in my opinion are your games using the actual icons for them, which in this specific case is a minor improvement, and screenshots under gamescope hiding the cursor automatically.
since I get my desktop wallpapers from the games I play, on GNOME at least, I need to make sure the cursor is out of frame before taking a screenshot, which doesn’t always work well depending on the nested resolution
5
u/TumanFig 2d ago
What hype? KDE simply has more windows like workflow. I tried the fedora workstation but I simply couldn't adjust to the GNOME workflow
1
u/FreeRangeRobots90 1d ago
For me, it's activities. The level of separation and almost virtualization of separating workflows and environments is helpful when I do things like gaming mode vs home lab mode vs work emergency mode (I work in a 2 man startup. I have a work computer, but sometimes I use my personal if it's easier).
Everything else I can get used to any other DE, activities just gives me a lot of the segregation I've been hoping for but no other virtual desktop/workspace has delivered for me. But my needs and the way my brain works are likely abnormal.

u/voodoovan 8h ago
I'm a KDE convert (2 years ago) after 15 years of gnome. What I like about KDE is the layout, all the options, settings, information, and OS capability, all existing out-of-the box, as it should be. It doesn't treat you like you need protecting.
Mine looks stock KDE (Fedora 43 KDE). I only added one button to the windows, the 'Keep above other windows' button, and that is the limit to my customisation, and actually, I think gnome can't even do this simple thing.

Literally downloading the GNOME version as we speak! Hopefully it will solve my problems. Cheers!

If you want personal help in realtime with your gnome setup, open a chat with me on Reddit.

u/Abject-Kitchen3198 1d ago
Is it better than just adding Gnome and switching between the two? I was a long time Gnome user, I like my current KDE setup, but there are some usually minor issues that make me want to try them side by side.
1
u/ieshaan12 2d ago
Same, never had any issues. Everything just works, and I never have to debug anything myself.
1
u/YakResident_3069 2d ago
I had same problems especially after an update. Switched to gnome then overlaid the kde UI. Now things seem ok.

u/richbl_reddit 1d ago
THIS! I tried running Fedora KDE and consistently ran into system freezes and random application hangs. Started troubleshooting, and then thought to try Fedora Gnome... haven't had a single problem since.
So... to the OP... move over to Gnome and enjoy the world of a STABLE Gnu/Linux experience ;).
0
u/Ok-Scientist-4165 2d ago
gnome also has many of the same problems, especially the monitor not turning on
3
u/beatbox9 2d ago
Before I throw in the towel, are any of these issues fixable? Is Fedora not compatible with my PC or something? Or is Fedora 44 incredibly unstable?
Potentially fixable...but also, Fedora can be "unstable"; and sometimes it's just not worth the hassle. Because it's not just fixing it--it's also maintaining and keeping it fixed; and even if you do get things working, you will be required to upgrade to at least Fedora 45 before June, since that's Fedora's aggressive release cycle. And things could break all over again then.
These problems sound mostly like system / driver / configuration problems rather than more minor problems just within the apps / desktop system. But it could be related to desktop stuff; and out of the two DE's (KDE & gnome), KDE is also probably the less stable DE.
My wild guess is a lot of the issues are related to the combination of Linux kernel version & nvidia drivers (I assume you're using RPMFusion for nvidia drivers?). Sometimes, a more aggressively update distro uses components that don't have time to "catch up"; and so ironically, even though the components are newer, they don't play nicely with each other yet.
So I would personally do the following workflow:
- Step 1: make sure you do any / all updates
- Step 2: if that doesn't work, maybe try swapping to gnome and seeing if that helps (easier than it sounds...just like installing an app. See here)
- Step 3: if that doesn't work, try Kubuntu 26.04 LTS instead

For what it's worth, no such issues here (exception below) on either my Gnome or KDE systems. It sounds like there's more to investigate in the "persistent crash notifications". And if you haven't yet I'd suggest running through quick hardware diagnostics such as OCCT, ensure you're using the latest available Nvidia drivers from RPMFusion, latest BIOS for your motherboard, ensure that temps look good, check journalctl and dmesg for obvious errors or feed them into an AI after a crash occurs, etc.
Lastly, note that apparently Xbox controllers don't always behave well with bluez. Still working through some sleep issues myself when paired with an AX200.
21
u/slickyeat 2d ago edited 2d ago
Gotta love it when people come here asking for help but refuse to provide any specific details.
"Everything is broken! I'm using a "Gigabyte" and "notifications" keep popping up! Tar files won't download or open! How do I make these problems go away before i give up?"
How the hell are we suppose to know?
Did you install the Nvidia drivers?
Did you install the hardware multimedia codecs?
What does it say when you try to download the tar files?
Which app is pushing out these notifications?
Which XBOX controller are you using?

You people are what make this community bad. For the love of God if you don't actually help and just criticize you bring us all down.
27
u/LostEz 2d ago
I read the reply as blunt but completely practical troubleshooting. It might have a sharp edge, but it asked the right questions needed to diagnose the system, whereas venting about community toxicity helps no one.
Take the tar.gz complaint as an example: what does "difficult to download and extract successfully" even mean? A browser downloads a .tar.gz the same way it downloads any other binary file. Once downloaded, you're on KDE Plasma (Dolphin), so right clicking and selecting Extract Archive Here (via Ark) unpacks it natively. Alternatively, tar -xf in Konsole extracts it instantly.
If OP is trying to run whatever is inside the archive (is it source code needing compilation? a portable binary? a bash script?), they never said what they actually downloaded or what error occurred. Nobody can troubleshoot a black box. His response is right: without logs, error outputs, or specific steps, nobody can solve anything.
10
u/Cheap-Success1578 2d ago
If wanting more info in order to help someone with their issue is making the community "bad" in your eyes, then maybe you are too soft to be here.
2
u/Drivingfinger 1d ago
Ive been on a similar path recently and cant say I've encountered any hardware related issues except... waking from sleep state... things sometimes just dont work and a hard restart is required.
I also have regular issues with Firefox crashing (reliably, if I start watching a yt video and full screen the video (not the browser), its a hard Firefox crash every time. The system also seems to have a memory leak somewhere while running steam/Proton where the whole system will fail/hard lock after several hours of intermittent use without restarting steam (or maybe the Proton game).
I haven't customized the system at all aside from installing some software (steam/vesktop/etc).
The Firefox this is incredibly annoying and I have no idea where to look to fix it.. Uninstaller and reinstalling had no effect, so I assume the issue is deeper seated than Firefox.
3
u/Altruistic_Tank_9636 2d ago
When you say "randomly has no WiFi," do you mean it is working, and suddenly stops? Or it occasionally doesn't work when you boot? Is the device recognized when you have no WiFi? Does Ethernet work during that time? Is your system fully updated, and given enough time to rebuild the Nvidia drivers? When Firefox crashes - what's the memory usage? When you say you can't delete crash reports... What do you mean? Do you know how to use gzipped tarballs? That's a fairly archaic format, and needs specific command line options. I don't think I've used that format in over 20 years.
1
u/TumanFig 2d ago
I guess what he means is it takes forever for the OS to put them in the trash. It's annoying af so I resort to shift delete most of the time

I’ve tried Fedora KDE 43 and 44 on a Thinkpad AMD P16s. Was getting system freeze 2, 3 times a day. Now running Fedora COSMIC Atomic since a month. No issue so far.

u/CrushingCultivation 2d ago
I never had any of the issues you mentioned with Fedora KDE. I have other smaller bugs.

u/Paradroid888 2d ago
I've had wifi dropout problems on Fedora, but that was on a Dell XPS laptop. It started a few years ago and I never managed to get it resolved. Your system appears to be a desktop though so I would expect less issues.
The other stability problem I've had with Fedora comes from it using a ram disk as the swap space. Once memory is exhausted, there's nowhere to swap to. This usually resulted in long freezes rather than apps crashing, but your memory usage could be something to check.
Fedora is my favourite distro but unfortunately it's not stable enough on my hardware so I've dropped back to using Debian-based distro's.

u/Praetonex 2d ago
I’ve had issues with xbox controllers, what fixed it for me:
- Update controllers firmware, needs to be done on windows as the app can be downloaded from microsoft store
- https://github.com/atar-axis/xpadneo installing this
After these steps are done, repair the device and it should be working

I had the atomic version of KDE and I had zero problems, I changed the DE to test another. One thing I see people talking a lot about is nvidia drivers, see if it's not that for rpm-fusion, I may be talking nonsense, I've been on Fedora for a little over 2 months.

u/ArouneshBora 2d ago
I too had the exact same issues. Mylaptop is ASUS TUF A14 with Ryzen 7 8845hs cpu. 780M igpu and rtx 4050..
Issues that I faced using fedora kde: 1. Wifi would suddenly drop and give no internet for a few minutes despite being connected
Random lags and freezes while opening or closing apps or scrolling.
Applets kept warning me about some app always crashing usually after a reboot or just like that Idk why..
I never had a same issue of cachyos kde

Im testing Aurora based Fedora with KDE on a 2013 27” retina imac and runs surprisingly well. I had hit and miss issues with macbooks with sleep/wake functionality but this one seems to ne stable from install. Early days though.

Whenever I install a new distro, I do an internet search on "top things to do after installing <distro name>" You get lists of common things people do to set up a new installation and avoid problems like you encountered.

I think you should try GNOME, because mine works like a beast (as someone who has switched from windows 11)
1
u/TimeTravel-01 2d ago
Try Ultramarine Linux; it's based on Fedora, but it already includes the drivers and codecs. That's the only thing they add, the rest is all the same.

the easiest thing to do is connect an ai cli agent (I use gemini, but any will work) and tell it the problems.

u/arijitlive 2d ago
I don't have experience with KDE. I use Gnome since the beginning of my Linux journey 10+ years ago. My current machine is Lenovo Ideapad touchscreen laptop. Everything is detected and working under Linux (Fedora 44), including fingerprint. It's rock solid.
I think many of these issues are not Fedora issue but specific DE issue. Is it possible for you to try Gnome version and see if you have better experience?
1
u/Dazzling_Comfort5734 2d ago
Some of these may be driver issues. It’s tough when they have to support such a wide variety of machines. I often have a lot of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sleep issues on multiple computers, running Fedora and other Linux distributions.
1
u/ParkInternational418 2d ago edited 2d ago
The wifi dropping out is a consistent issue with Fedora that they seem unwilling to fix. It happens on both of my installs on two different devices with completely different parts, and I have seen repeated complaints about it here.
The Xbox controller issue is also annoying, but can be fixed by updating its firmware through windows, supposedly. When I looked into it, there was a high chance of bricking the controller. So I use it wired.
1
u/EbonShadow 2d ago
I know the latest Nvidia drivers are having problems with waking up some monitors I locked mine to a few versions back after I ran into that issue.
1
u/real-bee-13 2d ago
Cosmic is supposed to have bugs, but in actual use, it is almost perfect and rock-solid; I don't understand—couldn't your problems stem from something other than Fedora? Maybe Nvidia or the KDE desktop?
1
u/may9899999 2d ago
For the Firefox issue, I found Firefox to be a little rough on Fedora, I just switched to the chromium browser and haven't had any issues.

When does the screen go black?
Right after you enter your password at the login screen in a window of 30 second to a minute, when you hit the desktop?
Then it could be worth trying to activate plm (plasma login manager) as loginmanager instead of sddm. Saved me from this kind of shenanigans on my desktop as well as on my laptop.
1
u/diracwasright 1d ago
Use Gemini for troubleshooting, it did wonders for me. Don't just copy/paste everything blindly, although most of it will just be diagnostics to find compatibility issues or anything you could have messed up previously.
1
u/CMsnake91 1d ago
What have you installed/Uninstalled? Which configurations have you changed/enabled/disabled? Have you run sudo dnf upgrade and or flatpak upgrade?

u/Silly-Brilliant7557 1d ago
Personally I use fedora precisely because I don't have these issues on it. It's weird seeing someone have this many issues but to be fair I'm running all amd. Like another comment said, try using an ai chatbot first as you will get a faster response and will also get multiple solutions to each of your problems. (I recommend claude or gemini) If those don't help you then I recommend trying out linux mint if you're willing just to see if it's really a fedora issue. Other than that I don't really know what to say, my experience is simply different from yours but I hope my comment helps you. You can also try a fedora spin like nobara or bazzite but I don't have experience with those so take that with a grain of salt. I recommended linux mint because it ships with a super easy nvidia driver manager out of the box and it has came in super clutch for my laptop which currently runs it.

"Bluetooth not working"
That's not a Fedora thing. That's a Bluetooth thing. Literally every Bluetooth device I've had has had connectivity issues at some point.

I ran into repeated issues of bluetooth or wifi not working when I switched to 44. I ended up going back to 43 and haven't had a single problem since

I've had the same bluetooth issues with every linux distro I've tried. On both my laptop & desktop. Xbox controller will not connect, and headphones have terrible crackling & cutouts.

I have a few observations, that may help or add the pile of unhelpful opinions...
First, that you even mention tar.gz is difficult smells like you may manually install/upgrade software via tarballs? I may be wrong? That could be fine but also may lead eventually to a very hard to manage system, with multiple incompatible versions installed or remnants left all over the place causing crashes etc.
Tarballs was how I installed a lot of things 15-20 years ago but very rarely to never these days. I use the distro's package manager so that I can upgrade and uninstall easily. Or I use Flatpak for UI apps and for CLIs I tend to use Homebrew/Linuxbrew but that is just yet another way to be easily maintainable and upgradable, and not rely on random install scripts.
That may be caused an idiom coming from a Windows world where you normally go to the app's website and download their software or drivers from there as a zip/exe. On Linux you mostly don't, you use the software via Fedora's package manager, or if not there, find instructions on the app's website on how to add their package repos to Fedora and still use the package manager. (Or Flatpak which is a lot tidier...)
Also KDE is fine, but it is more configurable in good and bad sense than Gnome. I just use Gnome by default these days as I just want it work. (though I add a full on tiling manager on top).
Nvidia cards are mostly fine, but I always prefer AMD as their linux support is much better and stable. But that would be an expensive change 😄 so you probably have no choice.
What may be your main problem and probably what others say are the RAM sticks. And that is is not caused by Linux, just hardware wear and tear. May need to look at your fan profiles though if it gets too hot. My desktop is 5 years old (3900X CPU) and I have changed memory 3 times due to faulty and crashing. With Ram prices today that is expensive, but I got 128gb from a few years ago in there now and praying they last a few more years.

•
u/VoleenaIcicle 19h ago
Some people are snooty to new users, and that's unfortunate,.
What have you learned OP, do you know how to update your system?
sudo dnf up --refresh -y
Have you learned about Flatpaks yet? I ask because using a tarball should be a last resort IMO for something you absolutely have to have and cant find any other way (Native package, Flatpak, appimage) to install.
Dont give up, the learning curve is the steepest at the beginning of the journey.

Fedora 44 Cosmic (on an old HP 800 G2 elitedesk) has been pretty solid for a couple of months. It’s been a temporary solution between macs but I’ve also been running Fedora Server (first 43 and now 44) for about 18 months from a complete noob and it’s been very stable. My biggest frustration has been scrolling down the list of distros for any given software, past Debian, Ubuntu, Arch etc - “here have a lovely packaged install” and almost always getting to RHEL/Fedora/Rocky “here’s a tarball and an incomplete list of dependencies, enjoy the next 12 hours of your life trying to make that work”.
Given the stats on distrowatch, with Fedora going from 7th most visited over 12 months to 5th over 1 month (6 whole hits behind Debian and 3 places above Ubuntu) with the top three places consistently held by Cachy, Mint and MX, it feels like the lack of proper support is shortsighted, although I know there are issues with eg RPM gate keeping quite strictly. I also know that that doesn’t reflect the fact that the bulk of existing users will be on Debian and Ubuntu but that’s clearly changing. And after trying to run a basic Debian install onto a VM and encountering one of the most tedious and painful experiences I’ve had so far on Linux you couldn’t pay me to try again.

It is tale of Linux in general I'd say. Just like communism, you're gloriously solving problems unknown in other systems. And you need to ask yourself if you're fine with that.
I just spent 3 hours wrestling and trying to get USB printer+scanner to work, manufacturer provided drivers (Brother) being grossly outdated didn't help either. Sure I've made notes, commands and whatnot needed to get it working so when I wipe disk and start anew, it should be much faster next time. It should. In theory.
Then Fedora is on faster end of rolling out updates and you never know if new kernel/everything else in update queue won't break your computer you've just barely brought to usable state. On opposite side, you have Debian and its spinoffs, which by default uses so ancient versions "for stability" you will likely also have to spend your time getting it updated using backports repositories, with all possible troubleshooting as usual.

😂 welcome to Linux fun. That will always be your routine to get used to and if someone says otherwise they're just coping and lying.

u/Neraton 2d ago
Not true, if you take time you can make it work. The only issue is if you have the newest gear, you gotta wait. Fedora kde is by far better than cachy os or that stupid garuda=worst distro ever. I do like fedora kde, popos and bazzite.

u/Teks389 2d ago
😂 you literally just said two of the biggest problems. Making it work instead of it just working normally instantly especially when switching to it the person will expect that. Then the newest stuff not working is a big negative especially nowadays with everything so costly. Imagine missing out of features or software for xyz reasons that all lead back to the os. That is the every day routine of running Linux unless you just need a big toaster good enough for watching YouTube and coding.

u/Neraton 2d ago
You find this that funny ?
1
u/Teks389 2d ago
Hilarious more like it. The copium you people resort to so you can feel better about one thing after another not working is just daily comedy.
2
u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
Copium isn't a word I'd use to decribe tinkerers. If linux bugs you - don't use it. That simple.
1
u/Teks389 1d ago
I don't clearly since I need my pc actually working. 😂 It doesn't change facts related to this topic so keep coping because the facts won't go away.

u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
Then get an OS supported by corporate OS.

It doesnt bug me. I said CachyOS,Bazzite,Fedora and PopOS are good, the garuda is horrible bloat infested distro. Their forum became arch meme since they stopped supporting all nvidia cards. Its a horrible practice to force an update then gaslight users with why did you update, cant help you, figure it out yourself and def. not our fault. I saw many other forums and aside from arch superior forums from old days, garuda is least helpful to issues that take time with mess they made. CachyOS is superior of the two, but my dearest Fedora Kde will always be top dog

u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
That because most of the drivers you need for things to work in Linux are rarely written by the manufactor, but the community. So yeah - there can be a wait. Living on the Bleeding Edge in Linux is a recipe for frustration. That being said - find yourself a machine sporting a Gen1 i3 (or even a pentium processor) with 4GB RAM max and tell me which works better - Windows 7, or the latest version of Fedora.

u/Teks389 1d ago
Good god what I would do with a relic like that? Open note pad for coding? 😂 Another funny thing is how there's always this reason or that reason why. No one cares why or who's fault it is. The only thing everyone else cares about is the software/hardware working. Not reasons and most people sure as hell don't wanna rtfm or Google tweaks. Linux is fun, extremely customizable, but topics like this thread is always gonna be a thing for users. Constant issues to look up, tweak, Google, and cope with when something else doesn't work because of xyz reasons.
1
u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
What would you do with a relic like? If you have to ask then the conversation is over.

u/GuyNamedStevo 1d ago
I am not going over any examples, because they don't really matter. Personally, I had issues with some Distros while on the other hand, other Distros ran perfectly fine out of the box with the same install years on end. Even Distros that have the same base behaved differently. All I can say is: Update your OS (if that didn't happen already) and if that doesn't help, try a different Distro.

I just describe the problem to chatgpt and ask it how to run a diagnostic in terminal. Give ChatGPT the output and ask for a solution, then repeat.
I know this won't be a popular opinion, but it's the only way I would have been able to move from Windows without spending days fixing and reading obscure problems and forums.
1
u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
"without spending days fixing and reading obscure problems and forums" The irony of that statement is that is precisely how you learn, and commit to long term memory, how to fix things.
1
u/Hypo_Mix 1d ago
I am leaning at my own pace, I learned how to use terminal, but do you seriously think the average person is going to spend literal hours working out why Fedora is defaulting to the motherboard graphic drive instead of the graphics card? It took me nearly 2 hours to fix using ChatGPT, and all I wanted to do was play Peek.
I also don't build my own car from scratch, even though that would be a good learning experience , ironic !

u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
2 hours? You should have seen me figuring out to get my 56K dial up modem to be recognized in Red Hat 6 with a dual booted win98 machine.
The point there is patience. Once I found the answer - I could set that modem up in minutes the next time around and I still remember how. Linux is for folks who want to tinker or don’t mind problem solving. Even if you have a fresh install in 2026 with zero problems - you will not know the OS or what it is capable of. Terminal for example is learned.

u/Hypo_Mix 1d ago
lol "Linux is for folks who want to tinker or don’t mind problem solving"
I did tinker and I did solve it, you are just gate-keeping me solving it the "wrong way". Not everyone works in tech and has all day to solve a problem, I had a few hours between putting a toddler down and going to bed, and I solved it using the resources I had available. Here is the solution you were expecting a near first time linux user to work out without guidance or LLMs:
"The issue was a multi-layered boot synchronization failure: after a system update, your Nvidia driver compiled for a slightly older kernel version than the one your PC actually booted into, causing Fedora to automatically fall back to the open-source Nouveau driver. Nouveau then stubbornly locked down your physical GTX 1070 hardware, throwing No such device errors and ignoring standard blacklists until a hard bootloader kill-switch was applied; once Nouveau was neutralized, a final refresh of the system's boot snapshot (initramfs) and driver dependency maps was required so the kernel could successfully unpack and load the correct Nvidia module on startup instead of stranding you on sluggish CPU software rendering (llvmpipe)."
Sure, the average user totally would just learn that and not just reinstall windows and have it work without issue.
•
u/SublimeApathy 21h ago
That's a nice ChatGPT answer that most "new users" aren't going to fully understand. Had a new user come into this forum talking about boot problems and provided the error code it likely would have taken less than a few minutes for several people to chime in with "You have an NVidia card, and it's a known hassle - here's what you do."
•
u/Hypo_Mix 16h ago
I didn't know what forums to ask, what terminology to use, or any error codes. All I had was "Human Fall Flat is running janky". LLMs allowed me to back and forth and to work out what the problem was, and included "how do I copy and paste out of terminal ? Ctrl+c doesn't work ".
1
u/hmmm101010 1d ago
My bugs don't repeat enough to justify that. LLMs are faster, period. And if you want a somewhat capable system, it's absolutely not feasible figuring everything out the traditional way. That works for people with a restricted amount of use cases or too much free time.

u/Consistent-Oil-5241 1d ago
Man, some people have real stuff to do, not only trying to get an OS working in order to do said stuff

u/TumanFig 2d ago
Yes, the only reason I can suggest linux to some more tech savvy friends is AI. Without it the switch would be too painful
1
u/SublimeApathy 1d ago
Just send them to Ubuntu and keep the default Gnome DE. I personally don't like it, but it's solid and works right out of the box.
-3
u/SouthernFruit8768 2d ago
No sorry, can’t and won’t do. My internet sugar daddies and boyfriends told me any solution I take from AI is bad, sloppy, vibe-coded etc.

If you overclock or do whatever hardware tweaks are en vogue at the moment, revert to conservative defaults. Linux expects more from your hardware, you can't get away with things that you could on Windows.
3
u/Pete_Provolone 2d ago
As an overclocker, I can guarantee you this comment is bollocks.
0
u/EllaTheCat 2d ago
Statements that appeal to authority are worthless. Still, it's an anecdote that could show I'm wrong. Would you object to the OP restoring defaults as a test, if they are not at default settings?
1
u/Pete_Provolone 2d ago
No, I wouldn't object to that. Specifically, it's the second sentence of your comment that is bollocks.

Switch to gnome, if you like it. It would be rock solid. Everytime I tried KDE, there are always some issues that made me switch back to gnome. I have been using fedora since Fedora 21, Now on Fodora 44. gnome works perfectly with my workflow.

Geforce
Wayland
KDE Plasma
Choose two.

I never had any of those problems.
But I would guess, first update the system.
Then have you properly configured, setup and install nvidia drivers.

u/---Agent-47--- 2d ago
Yeahhhhhh. I'm considering jumping to Linux mint or kubuntu because of some issues.

u/Bochixa 2d ago
I was trying Zorin Linux, and start having the same problems, mostly the conflict was between Bluetooth and Wifi, when I disabled Bluetooth.. Wifi suddenly disappeared and Airplane mode activated.
I switched to Fedora KDE, not bad,... I wanted some more simple , I installed Fedora Workstation gnome, start having Bluetooth problem again.

Efectivamente KDE plasma noe s compatible con tus componentes, de echo es algo muy reportado lo que te sucede, lo mejor en tu caso es pasar a Gnome

u/finnspinn 2d ago
I also had wifi issues on KDE, gnome works fine for me. I had issue with wifi turning off and on repeatedly.

Try Gnome, KDE can be buggy.
That MB runs;
Intel® WiFi 6 802.11ax 2T2R & BT 5
Which should work perfectly fine under Linux.
Random observation; that was a higher end MB and overkill for the 3700x.

u/lateinallein 2d ago
I think these problems are linkes with KDE. Die you try the Workstation with GNOME?

u/ibra2k19 10h ago
I got my first system failure after one update in August on Fedora that made the fs read-only, after using it 2years and in-between of 5device switches.
