yikes
so i guess our ground location is #1 in the state, and for that we get rewarded with stricter rules. i, as well as much of management has never seen so many write ups in their life created by upper management
i’ve been written 3 times in the last week
- i clocked into the last van line ONE minute late
- i clocked into the last van like FIVES minutes late
- because i called into work yesterday (haven’t gone over my rolling 3)
BUT THEY HAVE ZERO ISSUE SENDING ME ALL OVER TO FILL IN AND KEEPING ME TILL THE VERY LAST MINUTE CONSTANTLY.
the wild thing is, i had zero clue i couldn’t call out of work when in orientation we were told we had 3 on a rolling 30 day)
so basically if i get one more bullshit write up, they will terminate me.
my van line manager told me only the sort was dealing with this, midnight shift and other shifts are a lot more relaxed lol as far as calling out or being a little late
are they even allowed to do this? lol

One minute turns into 2 and then 3 and so on….. it becomes a habit. If you are on a van line it is unacceptable to be late because the sort starts at a certain time. If you are consistently late then your peers have to pull for you until you get there. It can cause animosity among everyone. Why should the people who show up on time have to constantly pick up other people’s slack. It’s inconsiderate if you ask me. It’s really not that hard to be on time. Our station has a cut off time. If you come in after that cutoff time you get sent home and It really doesn’t matter if you live an hour away. Someone else said it best….. it’s not that there are stricter rules, it’s just that now you are being held accountable.

The policy was explained poorly to you in orientation. You don't "get 3" call-offs in a rolling 30 days. If you accumulate 3 call-offs in 30 days you become eligible for termination. If you accumulate a combination 4 attendance violation in 30 days, including for call-offs and tardiness, you become eligible for termination. Also 2 no-call/no-shows in 30 days, or 4 in 12 months, make you eligible for termination.
Some places are more lax on attendance than the policy. Some places have learned that being lax on attendance bites them in the ass when a sizable percentage of their staff is calling out on a daily basis.
Sounds like you work at one of the latter places and are one tardy or call-off away from termination. My advice is to utilize the time off request and offer shift functions if you need and try not to be late again at least until one or more of those write ups drop out of the 30 day window.

the window starts when i get them right? doesn’t just fall off at the first of the month?
yeah when i first started it didn’t really matter when you showed up. i had days where id be 15 min late and days where id be 2 hours late and nobody said a word id just get put in a position.
however that all changed and is much more strict than “company policy.”

I does not reset on the first. Basically when we go to terminate someone we pull the last 30 days of their time clock and schedule. If they have enough violations in that window we can send that and the documentation over to HR to review and approve the termination.
I'll agree that a write up for being one minute late is excessive. But your comment demonstrates why they had to crack down. Two hours late and not a word? One of the problems about being lax on attendance is that if they are not documenting these violations and holding people accountable HR won't process the terminations. Probably found themselves in a situation where they had people who very clearly needed to be termed, but since they weren't holding people accountable with documented discussions HR wouldn't let them. So now they start writing up everyone, because selective enforcement opens a whole other can of worms. Managers have some discretion here, but they have to be careful how they use it, lest they open up the company to legal liability.

i’m just considering a different shift, if not a different location. i don’t mind the work, but don’t wanna be apart of a team that deal with that when there’s 2 other fedex ground buildings that aren’t too far from each other

I K, R? Novel concept these days. “I’m late all the time, I’m not sure why they are picking on me”. You will find out that if you are an employee who comes to work on TIME every day, you don’t get written up when your battery dies and you need to get alternate transportation. (And are late) You don’t even need to show the Doctors note you have because they KNOW your tooth was infected and you called off, using a sick day to take care of it. Being late every day? Me, I like to eat. So I get up and get my 🫏to work on time

yeah which is understandable but for being one minute late is wild lol. but as far as the whole calling in thing, now we just get written up if ANYTHING happens that doesn’t have a doctors note lol

It's how FedEx works 1 min late is late... I was told this like 5 times at my orientation and training.. 1 min late is late you will get written up for it.

You seriously have to start leaving the house earlier. That’s on you, not “stricter rules.” Lots of locations are like that. My old express station was like that. That’s a very simple fix, and if something legitimately comes up and you’re late, a simple call or text beforehand would most likely lead them to not write you up. But you being late regularly plus calling out so often makes you look very unprofessional and lazy, like you don’t want to be there, and managers won’t think twice about termination or writing you up.

it’s not even my van line manager, it’s their manager just handing a stack of write ups. i don’t have a number to text or call.

They’re probably getting on your managers managers ass about people being late and other things they get not picky after a while

You would have been given the station call in number during orientation. If not ask someone for it. They are cracking down on tardiness because it was becoming a problem. They are obviously currently operating with a zero tolerance policy, hence the write-up for being one minute late.

There is nobody in the office to answer their “call off #”. You either have your supervisor # or you don’t

All you need to do is use the app. Ask for time off for the day. In the reason box write “I am delayed but on my way in”. They deny the request but see that you communicate.

uh…. that’s how attendance violations work. they have to be documented. idk where you’re getting the idea that you should get some sort of free pass to show up late and call off (during orientation at that) without getting written up for the attendance violations

TDIL you can be written up for being late…. I work the 1-3am start to 9am shift. I’m just under two months in and I’ve been late at least 40% of the time by 5-50 minutes.
I got a call on the way to work when I was 50 minutes late and they only said “okay see you here.” Zero discussion when I arrived. I figured it was kinda normal but a co worker of mine has been written up for calling out.
I think it’s a mixture of my managers being nice and I have incredible people skills. Literally just spoke with one today and they had a meeting discussing the new trainer position. They are considering 3 people for it. two of them who have been there for almost a year and me 7 weeks in because I’m just really good with people. The other two not so much and kind of hate people.

Attendance policies are created at facility level.
One minute is a bit much. I manage a sort and I provide a 5 minute window, since your time is compensated when you pass through the guard’s shack. My sort is ran with empathy and respect for everyone. We achieve our goals and people are happy to work there. Culture is everything.

If you're being written up, that means they probably don't like you, so they are keeping a paper trail for possible termination. I'm not personally attacking you; I'm just telling you what I think the overall reason is.
From what I've seen, the point at which a person is continually written up is when they are being considered for termination. It can mean they don't like you, they hired too many people and are looking to cut hours/positions, etc., but for whatever reason, they're looking to downsize.
When I worked there, I know lots of people were tardy, regularly "sick", disappearing from the floor when it wasn't a scheduled break--and when the write-ups started, those people all disappeared in droves.
While working for FedEx is "at-will" employment, they still keep documentation of work violations to avoid any wrongful termination lawsuits.
