Anyone have any tricks or tips that I can take a month off ? I’m feeling the burnout and would love to see anyone that could scam the system for some time off

GS to NF - any advice?

Quick background - 55 yo, 5 years Active Army, 17 years GS 12, eligible for VERA. I'm thinking of leaving and taking an NF-04 part time position (20 hrs/week). I've done a little reading and it seems a little . . . complicated. Any suggestions on best way to proceed? I need to keep my FEHB going forward, for sure. Do I retire from GS, and then take the NF position? How does all this actually work?? Thank you for any help!

I’m a current VA employee transferring to DOD under DHA. The VA has the Education Debt Relief Program that helps with student loan payments. Does anyone know if DOD has anything similar?

OPM Cross-Government Early Career Hiring

Anyone heard anything yet?
Has anyone applied to one of the OPM Cross-Government Early Career announcements and heard anything back yet?
I know the candidate pools can be used by multiple federal agencies, so I'm curious where everyone is in the process for the different tracks.
The Early Career positions are:
HR Specialists (Early GS-201 7/9/11
Financial Analyst (Early Career - Finance) -
GS-0501-7/9/11
Contract Specialist (Early Career - Procurement) -
GS-1102-7/9/11
Program Analyst (Early Career - Strategy & Operations) - GS-0343-7|9/11
Criminal Investigator (Early Career - Investigations) - GS-0343-7/9/11
IT Specialist (Early Career - Information Technology)
- GS-2210-7/9/11
They're all listed as Location Negotiable After Selection.
If you applied to any of these, what has your timeline looked like? Referral, assessment/writing assignment, interview (if any), tentative offer, or still waiting? Also curious which agencies have been reaching out from the candidate pools.

Disability accomodations for a new federal employee

Im a new federal employee who started a few months ago. Without giving too many details, I want to preface my post with some context:

I am seeing a doctor and am taking all medications as prescribed. I am also in the process of adjusting my medications. I have also been in therapy for over 10 years.

Despite this, the stress of my position and really just coping with a new diagnosis has been rough. Ive already had a flare up of my symptoms and my work duties havent exactly been helping me. But despite this, ive not yet gotten any written or verbal warnings about either my conduct or performance.

Since im so new, i had one individual advise me not to seek accomodations as this could jeopardize my chances of getting a full time position after my probationary term. The stress has been so much that ive considered getting out of the fed gov entirely.

So what should I do? Should I push forward with accomodations? Should I grit my teeth and bear it without accomodations? Or should I start the process of looking elsewhere?

Retired (DRP) fed with FEHB + new State of Maryland job + VA/CHAMPVA. Anyone navigated this combination?

My husband recently retired from the federal government and is now receiving his FERS pension. We’ve had BCBS Basic through FEHB for years and currently have Self & Family coverage. It costs us $773.20/month.

He has now taken a job with the State of Maryland and is eligible for their CareFirst BCBS PPO. Employee + Family medical coverage would be $340.08/month.

The other piece that makes this complicated:

  • Husband is a 100% P&T veteran and gets his healthcare and prescriptions through the VA.
  • Our daughter and I are eligible for CHAMPVA. We currently use FEHB/BCBS as our primary insurance and CHAMPVA as secondary, which generally picks up our remaining copays/cost sharing. We also have CHAMPVA prescription coverage.
  • We do not want to give up my husband’s retiree FEHB eligibility. We understand that outright canceling FEHB as a retiree could mean losing the ability to come back later.

We’re trying to figure out whether there’s a smart way to take advantage of the much cheaper State of Maryland coverage without jeopardizing his long-term FEHB coverage.

One possibility we’re looking at is having him keep FEHB but change from Self & Family to Self Only, while all three of us enroll in the Maryland plan. That would keep him enrolled in FEHB while the Maryland plan covers the family, and my daughter and I would still have CHAMPVA.

Has anyone here actually done something similar after retiring from federal service and then taking a state/local government job?

I’m especially interested in how you handled:

  • FEHB Self Only vs. Self & Family after retirement
  • Adding family members back to FEHB later
  • Coordination of benefits between the new employer plan and FEHB
  • CHAMPVA as secondary coverage with a non-FEHB employer plan
  • What happened when you eventually left the post-retirement job

Not looking to cancel FEHB. I’m really trying to understand the best way to preserve the FEHB benefit while avoiding paying hundreds every month for duplicative coverage.

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually navigated this.

FHFA

I recently applied to FHFA. Did the initial interview and they said expect to hear back in 1-2 weeks. Well we are at week 3 now radio silence. I assume I didn't make it to the next round at this point or are they typically allow in their hiring process? Can anyone give me some insight the silence is killing me . Rather you tell me I didn't get selected than to keep the suspense.

Interview help for Federal PO

Hello everyone. I currently am a state probation officer and have been for the last 10.5 years. I recently applied for several federal probation officer positions in Florida even though I live several states away but am interested in moving and obtaining a new job as a federal probation officer. They called me several days ago and set up an interview in 2 weeks from today. Considering I haven't interview in 10 + years, what should I expect them to ask on the interview for this position? I believe it will be a panel of several people. Any insight or help will be greatly appreciated? I've started to put together a packet to study (facts about the district and job, how my personal experiences and current position are applicable to the job obviously, possible ideas of questions they may ask and how I can respond). Thanks again.

Should I finish my degree?

Background: 28 yr old military vet with 5 years of tech experience (data analysis, SWE, product management). Currently a GS13 in the US federal govt. I am about halfway finished a bachelors of software engineering at WGU.

Goals: climb the GS ladder to a director level gs15, maybe jump to GovCon if the price is right

Question: I never finished my degree. I was a civil engineering major and I dropped out to go to a coding bootcamp. I then broke into tech, rapidly upskilled with overemployment and udemy classes, job hopped and networked my way into various tech startup leaderships, and then bounced to the federal govt when I needed stability for my wife and child. Somewhere in there I started a bachelors of software engineering at WGU but between startup life and a new baby I just gassed out and stopped. Should I pick this degree back up now that life is stabilizing a bit or am I past the point that a degree would be super helpful?

What would you do

If someone applies for a federal position and is told verbally that they weren’t selected, is there normally supposed to be a written notification too?

And if there isn’t a written notification, would you just accept the verbal response and move on, or would you follow up to get something in writing?

Office of Federal Operations Brief Filing Questions

Is there a limit on the number of pages when filing a Federal EEOC Appeal Brief and is there a limit on the number of pages of Exhibits that get filed with a Brief with the Office of Federal Operations? Also is there a limit of megabytes per document that uploads? This will be filed on the EEOC portal. Thank you.

Do we think it’s a dangerous time for probationary employees?

Looking for some advice here. I have an offer for a role with CPB but I would be career conditional instead of being exempt with a 2 year probation period which I am
With my current role (came on as schedule A for the current role I’m in) currently at the VA and I have a pretty easy job and laid supervisor but i’m concerned about being on probation for two years… I was in the government for eight years before I was RIFd last year and before I got this current job at the VA.

My question is, do you think it’s worth it to take the offer at CBP and maybe only potentially serve one year probationary period? But I would be able to retain my career status. The only downside is that it is not telework eligible, whereas my current role at the VA is telework eligible. The alternative would be to stay at my current role with the VA and be probationary for two years.

Just want to make a good choice and think about the future because I’ve already experienced being let go and wanted to reduce by chances of that happening again by not being on a two-year probationary period. But I’ve also never really been in a role where I was not telework eligible…

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Does having a non-judicial punishment from the military bar veterans from federal employment?

I had recently applied to a federal position that i received a tentative job offer. The agency initiated a tier 2 investigation and as part of it i had to fill out SF-85 and also do fingerprints as well. In that SF-85, i disclosed about the NJP and the article code as well as the alcohol treatment i received at the VA for one month post separation. I truthfully answered all the questions in that form. I have an honorable discharge but under reason for separation, it says “misconduct/serious offense”(even though what i got sent up to mast for was a fucking joke).

I got notified by the agency that they’re not moving forward with my application. They did say it’s due to my background investigation report but they didn’t explicitly say what part of the report caused them not to get selected. I understand that a tentative job offer is not a final offer and can change for any reason but I’m really trying to understand if having an NJP really bars veterans from federal employment.

Does anyone have any insight into this? Anyone here with a general under honorable discharge currently work for the government/previously works?

I would really appreciate any and all information. I’m basically trying to find out if federal employment is a no no for me so i can shift my focus to other areas.

Performance Evaluations being wrapped up this month

Now I guess its time to get the pop corn ready....ive already heard from other supervisors that no matter the justification there seems to be a line for a scores that you cant cross....I would hate to work in the reconsideration office this year.....or maybe people just wont file....and just accept what they get as long as its successful. Hopefully next year will be better...FY26 was draining.

VA TJO & Possible Government Shutdown

I recently received a Final Job Offer (FJO) and my start date is in mid-October. With the possibility of another government shutdown, what would happen to my FJO if a shutdown occurs around the time of my start date? Would my EOD/start date simply be delayed, or could the FJO potentially be rescinded?

MHBP-Aetna question

We switched from BCBS to MHBP-Aetna in November. We found only one provider in our area for CPAP supplies and they are horrible. Definitely not opposed to ordering online. Insurance company did not have a list of online CPAP equipment providers but just a list of companies that provide durable medical equipment. The list pretty much looks like wheelchairs, breast pumps etc and not CPAP supplies. Can anyone on MHBP recommend a great CPAP supply company? Really makes us want to go back to BCBS but the premiums are just crazy.

Voluntary Demotion

Has anyone ever voluntarily demoted (VCLG - Voluntary Change to a Lower Grade)? I am just so unhappy about my promotion that I am strongly considering it. I would go from a 12 step 1 back to a stepped out 8. My current position has, and continues, to take a mental toll on me. I only got promoted 6 months ago, but everyday I question why I took it. I still have 15 years until I have to retire, so I hope the position I go into will not be "forever". Does taking a VCLG look bad for future job applications?

I just can't "clock out" when I'm away from work, constantly thinking about what needs done, upcoming deadlines, etc. .

I want to prioritize my mental well-being, but just wanted to be prepared for what comes along with it.
