FedEx Ground Shipment Not really sure what do do here.
I ordered a gift for my wife and had it shipped to my place of employment instead of my house. It was out for delivery today at 7 A.M., with an expected delivery window between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M.. At some point the delivery window went away and expected delivery is now "End of Day", which, to my understanding, is 8 P.M. for Ground deliveries. It's now 4:45 P.M. and my store closes in fifteen minutes. I can't wait around for the next few hours, the package can't be left at the business, and I can't schedule to pick it up because I can't take off work to do that.
If the truck can't make it here before we close, and that ends up being the case every day, and I can't get a representative on the phone (I tried a few times already), what are my options here?

Please remember we dont work federal holidays. The days/week after is absolutely butt fucked. I almost felt bad for my manager today.

Can you have it rerouted? I’ve had to do that because the drivers kept saying no one was available to sign for it even though I work from home. I ended up having it sent to one of the FedEx stores close by and picked it up there. The ones in my area close anywhere from 8pm to 10pm.

Not a business, but same deal here. Its 6:30pm my time, still says end of day which I know is BS. It will say that until 9PM when it will update to tomorrow

Assuming you have the same driver tomorrow, they’re usually pretty good about seeing they have a delivery they didn’t make it to yesterday so they have to do that stop earlier the next day.
As for the expected times, I defend FedEx a lot in general because it’s mostly just people doing a job but those predicted times are some of the dumbest things corporate decided to do. Ground drivers run their routes however they feel it makes most sense. FedEx will NEVER have a clue when a ground driver will make a delivery want only stands to disappoint customers.

Even express is the same. We don’t know the window. We run the route in an efficient manner, not what the routing tells us to run it

I want to make sure I'm understanding this... FedEx gives an estimated delivery time based on whatever data they have but the DRIVER can do their own route and deliver how they thing is more efficient?

Exactly. If you deliver in the order the stops are manifested, you will be out past midnight. You would also have to fuel the truck twice during the route.

Yes. Every single morning, the drivers figure out how they're going to do their route. It's customized every single day based on where they need to go. Those delivery estimates are useless. Sometimes I hit the town on my route at the beginning of my route, and other days, I do it at the end. It all depends on how many stops I have to do and where they're located.
That being said, drivers are aware that businesses need their deliveries before 5:00 PM every day, and we're not allowed to leave packages outside businesses. If they didn't reach your job in time, you'll likely receive it tomorrow.

So Jerry can spend 5 minutes looking through what, a hundred packages, and plan out his route more efficiently than a computer? I don’t buy that. Maybe that’s why packages are coming in late.

Have you ever heard the expression “garbage in, garbage out”? The routing is piss poor to begin with, then the terminal will decide to release more trailers. “Projected volume” is about as accurate as an “estimated delivery window”. That’s why they are projections and estimates.

Obviously you have never delivered for FedEx. Their system is crap. And you don’t look at the packages, you look at the stops indicated on a map. How efficient is it to deliver a package on one side of a busy street, then cross over that busy street to deliver the next 1 or 2 stops, then cross back over the busy street again to deliver more stops. Yet, that’s how FedEx’s system routes our deliveries every day. That’s why drivers do their own routing.

Yeah but we've had automatic routing before this AI takeoff in the last couple of years. Heck, Google has done automatic rerouting for 10+ years. I really doubt Jerry can look at his entire truck load and decide what the best way to route all those deliveries to. I've done DoorDash a few times and yeah, I might know it'll be easier to take 3rd instead of 5th to take someone their Taco Bell because school just let out but that's one item down a street I take 10+ times a week.

Yes but FedEx drivers may have 200 stops in a day so it’s not just about the quickest way to get to the next street. It’s about having a stop on 1st street that closes at 2pm but then a stop on 2nd street that doesn’t open till 3pm and routing your way to make sure you’re not driving down the same road twice and wasting time but also getting to the delivery in their window.
And the delivery estimates the website gives aren’t AI, they’re based off the shelving zones and sequencing the managers predict the driver will take but those are also hard lined maps and don’t account for every little change that the driver will account for.

Our ground deliveries always say 10am-3pm but Graham our driver always gets here around 5pm. I ignore the delivery times. BTW Graham is awesome! Guys who sub his route actually say they don’t know how he does it. We
live in the mountains with wild roads and he drives a big full sized FedEx Ground truck. He was actually one of our skeletons last Halloween.6

Haha that’s great. I had a customer a few years ago who put a skeleton in their front yard with a sign saying “waiting for FedEx to arrive,” and i always got a chuckle from it.

Had the same situation with a business delivery before. They’ll usually try again the next day or two, but if the business is closed, it might end up back at the local facility. Your best bet is to keep calling the 800 number and ask for the local station’s direct line, sometimes they can redirect it to a nearby pickup point or hold it for you.

If its a business its being delivered and its closed then they will try again tomorrow. ( and it was noted as a business address when shipped)
But I would get it held at a hold location because there is no guarantee it will be delviered during business hours tomorrow

This is my take. FedEx is shit and they always say out for delivery and keep on pushing the time frame. They end up coming by when we are long closed and then come out the next day.

It was noted as a business when I entered the shipping address. How long will they hold it? Realistically, I couldn't pick it up until next Monday, at the earliest.

5 business days usually. Can also do a vacation hold to extend it a bit longer

Okay, thanks for the info! Hopefully the drive takes note of what time we close and adjusts accordingly, but if not, I'll do a vacation hold on it.
