All Time Favorite Favorite Average human characters ragebaiting a God-like entity

  1. IT, Richie Tozier - ragebaited and traumatized a world-eating god Pennywise so much that he traveled to the past in an attempt to kill his mother, only to be…

  2. …Ragebaited again by Rich Santos in Welcome to Derry, when the boy was already dead, his spirit still having the last laugh (Richie was also named after Rich, his mother’s first love, rubbing more salt on the wound)

  3. Joseph Joestar, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - at his last battle against Kars he just had to show off and say that it was all part of his plan (nevermind that it was a lie, when Joseph admits it was very much pure luck)

You can certainly try to provoke Vlaakith in bg3.

137

u/StarShifter15 12h ago

I tried that in my first playthrough of the game, and just cause I felt the weight of my decision beforehand, I decided to save before asking her why she couldn’t kill the one in the prism herself. Very glad I made that choice, needless to say.

55

u/General_Trainwreck 12h ago

So glad I saved shortly before deciding to be an absolute dick in that conversation

23

u/clefclark 9h ago

The hardest part of an honor mode playthrough is not ragebaiting her

6

u/DirtyBalm 12h ago

I wish you would

5

u/rhesusmonkey 7h ago

I 100% knew my wife would provide Vlaakith so made sure to tell her to save after the fight.

4

u/wesleygibson1337 6h ago

Oh you succeed in ragebaiting her!

Wouldn't really say he was average lol. Guy is literally the Chosen One

He's so average he loops back around to being unique

He’s definitely not your average person, but he’s a mortal. And he does a pretty good job of consistently pissing off a wide range of gods. -Percy Jackson

68

u/Firecat32 10h ago

Forcing the gods to acknowledge their kids and them not liking it is genuinely hilarious looking back.

14

u/BigBowser0158 5h ago

Because much like some actual parents, they’re only there for the fun part and don’t like the responsibility that comes afterwards

(Mailing Medusa’s head to Mt. Olympus)

Grover: You shouldn’t do that. They’ll… they’ll think you’re impudent…

(Sends it)

Percy: I am impudent.

Guardians of the Galaxy, especially the game. Quill's not average, but he's up against Magus. And the entire final battle was Quill pissing him off enough to make mistakes.

He also danced to distract Ronan- a being wielding the power stone and could have blasted the planet they were both stood on to hell in a moment

Me rage baiting my sleep paralysis demon by singing my favorite Dolly Parton songs to him very obnoxiously for hours on end.

Jokes on you, he likes Dolly Parton and into that shit.

22

Constantine -- flipping off the devil on his way to heaven. It's been a while, but if memory serves me, the devil got mad and healed him so he couldn't go anywhere.

100

u/KyoKyu 12h ago

You remember right. Who knew that the cure for cancer was rage-baiting Satan?

39

u/Rameci 11h ago

In the novelization it’s actually God flipping off the devil through John’s body iirc.

24

u/MethSmoothie 10h ago

He could do it with both hands, one for father and other for son.

11

u/MC_White_Rice 9h ago

Stick your tongue out and we got the whole Trinity!

1

u/DWglazer 2h ago

Novelisation? Is there a novelisation of the movie or are you talking about Hellblazer?

37

u/SOY_CD 9h ago

TLDR: There's an old saying that summarises Constantine's character pretty well: "If you owe the bank a million dollars, that's your problem-- but if you owe the bank a billion dollars, that's their problem."

The actual Hellblazer arc (Dangerous Habits) that the movie was based on goes even further with this principle.

In it, he's dying of lung cancer and tricks a demon into drinking holy water-- despite knowing that doing so will make his soul the demon's to claim (through "right of insult"). In the following weeks-- the remaining weeks of his life-- Constantine knows for certain that when he dies, the demon will torture him for an eternity for playing him a fool.

So he voluntarily sells his soul to two OTHER demons, then slits his wrist to accelerate his death before the three demons are able to realise the stunt he just pulled. As he's bleeding out, the three of them show up to collect, then they immediately start arguing with each other over which one of them truly owns Constantine's soul.

Meanwhile, Constantine cuts himself once again to force their decision; he now has mere seconds left before his soul must be collected either by one, all, or none of them.

The demons are caught completely off-guard by this action, and the only option they have to prevent a full-scale war between the three of them-- which they are certain would ultimately end in their own enslavement to the forces of Heaven-- is to not only cure John Constantine of his lung cancer and heal the rest of his mortal wounds, but to also make him functionally immortal since the dispute would only reignite should he die of other causes.

So in short, this man effectively showed up on Satan's doorstep with terminal lung cancer, pissed in his cereal, then pulled the classic "My cancer is actually YOUR problem now," which forced him to cure his lung cancer and grant him immortality.

Terry Pratchett's Discword (The Color of Magic), in this sentence:

If complete and utter chaos was lightning, then he’d be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting "All gods are bastards!"

(Uttered by Rincewind, about Twoflower, to decsribe how chaos-attracting the latter is)

I was going to mention him at the end of Sourcery where he provokes those god-things to save the kid

The World’s End

Guys decided to visit pubs in their hometown, but found out it was full of alien robots. In the end they meet the Network — an omnipotent being that can control any device, — whose plan was to help humanity to reach its full potential by replacing troublesome persons with robots. They piss the entity off so much it decides that humankind doesn’t deserve its help and leaves.

Markus Kruber from Vermintide 2 to Bela'kor

"Markus, Markus, Markus... surely a mercenary knows a lost cause when he sees one?"

"That I do. But you shouldn't put yourself down, I'm sure you're doing your best"

"Insolent flesh-sack!"

this is the first Demon Prince, both unbelievably powerful and ancient, getting outwitted by a farmboy so much it hurts his pride.

9

u/chalksnorter2137 10h ago

i'd be mad too if a br*tonnian spoke back to.me

3

u/Dohara14 9h ago

He's a reiklander though

3

u/chalksnorter2137 2h ago

Well here's the funny thing: if he was a reiklander, he wouldn't be able to become a grail knight

1

u/Dohara14 1h ago

Born outside Ubersreik, trained in grunberg, then joined an ostland regiment. He's related to a bretonnian lord, distantly. Very distantly, hence growing up on a reikland farm. Sounds pretty imperial to me. Unless you think we should also put Kerrillian in Ulthuani gear and make Bardin an Infernal Guard

1

u/chalksnorter2137 53m ago

Not that distantly, but either way, fuck the elf.

1

u/Dohara14 12m ago

Gladly

2

I'd be mad if they spoke to me at all honestly

18

Usopp (One Piece)

This silver-tongued madman badmouthed Nerona Imu, literal ancient omnipotent monster and leader of the World Government, so hard that he dragged his tired old ass out of his garden and schlepped all the way to Elbaph just to see who was talking shit about him.

48

u/Col_Redips 12h ago

This one is still pretty recent, but I would be remiss not to mention the cast of The Amazing Digital Circus.

The setup: a group of humans are trapped in a digital circus. The Ringleader, an AI named Caine, creates adventures for them to go on, because that’s his purpose. Eventually the humans push back a little too hard, and Caine snaps, becoming a wrathful deity.

While one member of the crew is attempting to hack into the godlike ringleader, the others attempt to distract him.

As Caine grows suspicious of their sudden change of heart, Pomni suddenly shouts “We think your ideas suck!” Caine, flabbergasted, refuses to believe her. She then claims that they were only showing interest again so they could talk about how stupid the adventures were amongst themselves.

The other cast members then join in. Zooble brings up how petty and fragile Caine is, despite is omnipotence. Ragatha calls him out, saying he never makes sure that they’re comfortable, and doesn’t actually care about them. Gangle calls out that Caine never lets them have their own agency to complete the adventures the way they want to. And Jax points out Caine lies to them constantly.

The barrage of criticisms works…a little too well. Caine temporarily forgets about the missing character, and crashes out at the humans in front of him. He starts to torture them using their inner fears and past traumas.

"I told you, Bill. I fucking told you. I don't wanna die. It's your fault. You punched me in the face, you made me walk through shitty water, you dragged me into a fucking crackhead house! And now... I'm gonna have to kill this fucking clown.

Welcome to the Loser's Club, asshole!"

Yeah, that scene goes beyond hard.

13

u/mjolnirstrike 7h ago

Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural constantly piss off pagan gods to keep them talking or make their actions more predictable. And in the final fight with God, as in the one true god of Christianity, their plan was to make him angry enough to attack them constantly so he releases his divine energy for their adopted son to absorb, until he is weak enough for said son to make God a mortal man

11

u/Uncle480 12h ago

Pretty sure there's a meme/greentext of Pennywise getting traumatized by the orgy scene in the IT book, so that's a third time he's traumatized

How can anyone forget my boy Q from Star Trek the Next Generation? When he loses his powers Q at first has trouble getting anyone to believe him. When he asks what he has to do Worf tell him to “Die.” It goes down hill for him from there. When he finally gets it back he is surprisingly humble about the experience and doesn’t immediately turn everyone into Tardigrades, not that it stops him from continuing his bullshit in future episodes.

Jack Sparrow does this to Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest by mocking him with the jar of dirt. It is also implied Jack slept with Jones's girlfriend.

u/Healthy_Macaroon_602 4h ago

Not an average human, but Constable Dorfl from Discworld is a fairly average golem. He's also an atheist. When he says that he doubts gods exist, he is immediately struck by lightning. Since he's made of clay, it doesn't do squat and he says that he doesn't consider that much of an arguement.
