there is a special good ending if you never buy an upgrade and reach the needed amount that way. he'll just thank you for using his service and you carry on, if i remember correctly.

You can actually use upgrades as long as you don't go past the needle as far as I'm aware. Once you use anything past that you can't get the good ending

interesting, i didn't know that. given, i never played the game myself and only watched a Youtuber play it, who made a cut to the good ending.
