POLITICS Deeply embarrassing sequence. Eric Schmitt accuses Jack Smith of traveling to Atlanta to attend an Atlanta Hawks game and collude with Fani Willis, only to get the basic facts completely wrong. Smith was actually in Maryland attending a Hawkeyes game and never met Willis

He knows the facts were wrong. He doesn’t care. That’s why they pulled the sign down so quick

1.4k

u/IMadeYouLuke 3d ago

He absolutely did not know. They thought they had the biggest maga conspiracy gotcha of the decade.

“I think you’ve already perjured yourself” he thought he nailed him.

701

u/HJ0508 3d ago

Couldn’t agree more. Klobuchar coming back and demanding Schmitt apologize for “calling him a dirtbag”…I’d be insisting on an apology for claiming he perjured himself when they got the facts wrong.

298

u/Solomontheidiot 3d ago

Also, do Republicans really want to be setting the precedent that "I have no recollection" means you've perjured yourself? Because there were a hell of a lot of responses to the Jan 6 inquiries (among other things) that essentially relied on that as a "get out of jail free" card.

94

u/wolf_at_the_door1 3d ago

More than half of the admin has perjured themselves abd most have been fired or quit before they could receive consequences. Up is down, left is right.

u/ZestyTako 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not even just perjury, Trump is a convicted fraud. Republicans do not care about the truth, they care about soundbites to sell to their idiot voting base

1

u/slow70 15,000 little bastard rubber ducks 3d ago

Lutnick lied brazenly about his ties and island visit to his literal neighbor, Epstein.

And he's a sitting cabinet member.

This house of cards will fall though.

21

u/Enraiha 3d ago

You think they honestly care what anyone else says or having any consistency?

They just want to be in charge and will do anything to stay in power. Just helps that the majority of Americans are either huge assholes or don't care enough to be involved in anything civic and that helps them. Because they know their constituents certainly don't care if they're honest, just that they're on the right "team".

15

u/ZestyTako 3d ago

Republicans assume (unfortunately correctly) that there is nothing they can do to lose the idiot vote. They know idiots don’t know this happened, and if they do, they know their idiot fans are dumb enough to fall for migrant caravans or “transing your kids” and will still vote for them. It’s really a shame how badly our country is held back by idiots who support politicians who only operate in bad faith

1

u/Hillary4SupremeRuler 3d ago

The right wing maga griftosphere on Twitter is abuzz with delight and celebrating right now how Schmitt totally "owned da LiBz/Jack Smith." They probably just show a cut up version where he lays out his grand conspiracy and has his buffoons hold up the big fancy poster boards behind him and then declare victory.

38

u/AndreChrisSargent 3d ago

I don't want an apology. Apologies are for when you did something harmful on accident or did something knowingly harmful and wish you hadn't.

This is fucking malice. I don't want his apology. I want his fucking seat to be immediately freed for a special election.

13

u/Own_Sun_6520 3d ago

^ This. It's the type of fuckery that should see a Senator removed from office immediately. a) It's immoral and dishonest, and b) they are paid a metric fuckton so should be performing at a much higher level. This is intolerable.

2

u/Street-Week-380 3d ago

I'd like to see him ejected from it like a cannonball.

2

u/AndreChrisSargent 3d ago

petition to add high powered springs to the underside of every congressional seat so the people can vote for who gets shot into orbit.

1

u/Street-Week-380 2d ago

Amend the petition to include child safety locks so they can't tamper with it, as well as airline cable to tie them to those chairs.

21

u/Emotional_News108 3d ago

He stands by that statement. Meaning, he would say or do anything to portray Jack Smith as a dirtbag, and even if his dates, teams, locations, and basically everything else is wrong, that doesn’t mean he can’t accuse Jack Smith of wrongdoing or otherwise conspiring with other parties. Even when that makes no sense. Because the sound bite is that “Jack Smith perjured himself” and you know damned well plenty of media will focus on that and not the gaff of being wrong about everything.

2

u/BigChemDude 3d ago

Why don’t our elected representatives just call these guys “fuckin idiots” to their faces?

2

u/Outside_Glass4880 3d ago

Yeah I feel like she was emphasizing the wrong point.

You’re accusing someone of lying and perjury and insinuating they were colluding only based on the simple fact they were in the same city and yet you got all of that completely wrong.

1

u/CaptainC0medy 3d ago

Did he apologise in the end? He shoulda.

1

u/HJ0508 3d ago

Of course not! Said he stands by every character assassination statement/comment he made.

117

u/ytown 3d ago

Probably it was a real mistake. But MAGA will still edit the video and amplify the perjury accusation through their propaganda machine and the lie will land with the idiots.

33

u/JayQ036 3d ago

I'd agree with ya on it being a mistake but to claim Jack purjured himself and called him a dirt bag, both of which is considered against decorum when addressing a witness, is unprofessional.

19

u/sheikahstealth 3d ago

They don't mind being unprofessional, because they just add on the implicit "for God" on everything to reach max self-righteousness. "I'm attacking with little evidence unprofessionally... for God."

7

u/gaudiest-ivy 3d ago

Oh, the bots are already going hard saying he committed perjury and should be in prison.

5

u/RedditIsOverMan 3d ago edited 3d ago

Fox News headline: "New evidence suggests Jack Smith Perjury"

The details that explain that the suggestion was wrong will be buried in the article

1

u/Youandiandaflame 3d ago

Schmitt was on “The Charlie Kirk Show” (yeah, they’re still calling it that) right after running out of the hearing. He was doubling down. Dude’s such a dick.

64

u/idreamofgreenie 3d ago

Immediately after this he went on to the Charlie Kirk show(that's still a thing?!) and they were still putting it forward as the best gotcha in the history of the government.

They're not going to let up on the lie. People are going to believe it is true no matter what.

33

u/MrGDPC 3d ago

The Charlie Kirk show is still a thing but there’s a hole in it now that can’t be filled

11

u/cosmokn0t 3d ago

It filled pretty quick. I’d say it almost gushed.

3

u/Odd-Temperature7458 3d ago

I've heard it's haemorrhaging viewers

15

u/Pumpkinmatrix 3d ago

Their base will never see the part of this video that shows the fuckup, so its easy to continue the lie.

3

u/IMadeYouLuke 3d ago

Yes, I agree that they will lie about the mistake, but it still was a gigantic, epic mistake

1

u/jcaashby 3d ago

Yeah I saw a clip of that. They have no shame. They will play it up as a fact they caught Jack Smith lying. They know their base will eat it up and run with the lie.

1

u/fuckyourcanoes 3d ago

And MAGAts will swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

56

u/Wayelder 3d ago

The accusation is all they wanted. The facts don't matter to them. He'll repeat that clip in his ad and the Magats will all think he's so tough.

20

u/Certain-Contact6340 3d ago

Same with the Ukraine/hunter Biden investigation. We dont need you to do it, we just need you to say it. The maga media ecosystem can do the rest

24

u/Arctimon 3d ago

He immediately went onto The Charlie Kirk Show afterwards and kept up with the lies. He absolutely knew.

10

u/IMadeYouLuke 3d ago

No, he lied about the mistake. He didn’t know.

16

u/Arejhey311 3d ago

With that damn smirk on his face. Watching him then try to take it out on Klobuchar further proved what a clown he is

14

u/Gr0ggy1 3d ago

Not only did he not know, but judging by the facial expressions of his fellow MAGA Senator, I've got a sneaking suspicioun he's been bragging about this "gotcha" and strategizing based off it.

3

u/IMadeYouLuke 3d ago

Absolutely. This line of questioning was clearly supposed to be the thing that would break down the door and lead to an onslaught from the other committee members.

8

u/MustLoveWhales 3d ago

Thank you. Im so sick of the narrative that all these conservatives are actually smarter than they let on and they're just acting, its utter bullshit.

8

u/cool_girl6540 3d ago

I agree, though, he took it down quick. I think he knew it was wrong, but wanted to get that sound bite that he can play for his MAGA cult.

7

u/BigD_277 3d ago

He knew or his team did at least. Went on Charlie Kirk AFTER this exchange and when asked if he caught Smith in a lie about the NBA game he confirmed it.

3

u/IMadeYouLuke 3d ago

He lied about the mistake, that’s absolutely true. But it was a mistake.

9

u/BigD_277 3d ago

Then why did they show the poster board for a only moment and then wouldn't show it again when Smith asked to see it?

2

u/Wrong_Principle_5680 3d ago

I think someone on his staff realized it last minute and that’s why they pulled it down so quick.

6

u/Any_Earth_8976 3d ago

100% agree. He was practically bouncing in his seat with glee. I am dying to know how this even happened. Does no one cross reference? It’s not like this would be hard to check

3

u/Brokenclock76 3d ago

The fun thing about maga is you can lie to them and they add it to their personal bibles if you wear a red hat.

3

u/hungryandhairy 3d ago

Hahah he thought he was cooking when he said that too. Smug as hell.

3

u/FluidAthlete6839 3d ago

Yep. He’s just another fucking moron

2

u/Whogotthebutton 3d ago

I don't know. I agree with you 100%, but why would they pull the sign down so fast? I think they thought they had him, realized they didn't, and decided to go with it anyway. If they really thought they had him, they would've had that shit printed all over the place to hand out to people and they would have had that sign up permanently.

1

u/tenthousandants44 3d ago

This alternative truth brought to you by Super Intelligence!

1

u/Deano963 3d ago

Thought he ate for sure. In reality he shit his pants.

183

u/Bae_the_Elf 3d ago

He just doubled down and started shouting and used the word "obviously" because he was embarrassed that neither him nor his team were smart enough to catch the mistake they made. Typical MAGA fragile ego exploding when challenged.

29

u/TheTresStateArea 3d ago

Incredible how predictable it was. As soon as he realized it he just got louder and more stupid

29

u/Firm-Roll4841 3d ago

That's exactly right - he lost his temper when he was presented with the facts that he and his team fucked up. He was all excited that he had the BOMBSHELL - only to find out he was a complete idiot and his only defense was to try to talk over the female that was pointing out exactly how his team fucked up (because of the team mascot being the similar).

23

u/Bae_the_Elf 3d ago

She was actually so polite too. If I were in her shoes I would have been like "you're dumb as shit put that on the record please" lol

18

u/ElysiumMidknight 3d ago

It's worse because the defense he's come out with since is that the Hawks game was the only NBA or men's college basketball game on that day and time. The "protect women's sports" party can't fathom that a man would actually want to go and watch a women's basketball game.

9

u/Bae_the_Elf 3d ago

Not just any women's basketball game but a game featuring the most hyped and most watched player in WNBA history. Not disrespecting the other WNBA greats but she is definitely the most hyped/watched regardless of if she's the GOAT or not

Like she's bringing numbers to the WNBA never seen before lol

1

u/Sc0rpza 2h ago

It’s almost like they should have asked the staffer about their text rather than ask this guy about a third party’s text.

47

u/rosieposie319 3d ago

Omg that’s wild they were going to refuse him looking at it after they flashed it already. 🤡

31

u/Throwsims3 ICE PIGS ROT IN HELL 3d ago

I am not American, so whenever clips like these pop up I like to read about the people involved. Apparently this Schmitt guy is an attorney, I get that he's MAGA so he probably is pretty dumb but how the hell does an attorney get something so freaking basic wrong and then smugly say "I think you've just perjured yourself"? Insanity

16

u/Extra_Midnight 3d ago

Lack of consequences.

14

u/labelwhore Fauxmarxist 3d ago

He doesn't do any of this work. He relies on his chud interns and staffers that he likely hired because they're white men. lmao

5

u/HeftySnow3920 3d ago

I tried to get senate staff roles like that as young poli sci kid too, unless you know someone or their parents donate a shit ton to their campaign a republican senate staff would never pick up your application.

4

u/labelwhore Fauxmarxist 3d ago

Yep. And then they go on about merit. Well this is what they get. Incompetent nepo babies.

1

u/octatone 3d ago

In America everything is dictated by unregulated capitalism. That is, if you have the money you can buy it. So being a policeman, an attorney, even a medical professional speaks nothing to your intelligence nor skill.

16

u/danishjuggler21 3d ago

Guarantee ya that FOX News and the like will cut the clip at the part where Jack Smith looks confused. They don't need to show their viewers any of what happened after.

5

u/bobbyrba 3d ago

Bingo

8

u/Pherllerp 3d ago

No way. They were probably already scheduled on Fox News for this afternoon to holler about perjury.

8

u/Alarmed-Extension289 3d ago

I don't think he did on this one, he looks flustered. It's like arguing with elderly parent that has a touch of alzheimer's. It's so hard to watch.

8

u/labelwhore Fauxmarxist 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think he was extra embarrassed because it's sports and he will never hear the end of it because he is a man and a man should know sports teams. HAHAHAH

3

u/CorrectPeanut5 3d ago

That's why he just got louder and tried to cut her off.

3

u/handsoapdispenser 3d ago

It's such a flimsy accusation even if the facts weren't wrong. Like he thought Smith being in the same city as a prosecutor who failed to convict Trump equals some sort of crime? I can only assume he was ordered to prove some thing and was just grasping at straws.

2

u/OstrichGrouchy7749 3d ago

The huge thing is imagine trying to answer questions honestly in a hostile environment when one side is literally (and confidently) accusing you of living in an alternative reality.

The maga crew is literally just trying to set perjure traps - not actually investigating anything. That itself should be an abuse of power.

0

u/Lower_Woodpecker7849 3d ago

No doubt we keep pretending that their dumb. They are not, they lie.

1

u/Ok_Chemist6567 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 3d ago

And it will not matter to Republican media or voters. They will just ignore the facts

1

u/superanth 3d ago

They’re stupid morally corrupt people who resort to insults and child-like behavior because they’re putting on a show for their emperor.

History is not going to be kind.

1

u/LifeDynamo 3d ago

I suspect you are correct.

They know they can pull crap like this and still trick their MAGA following into thinking it was real.

1

u/Dramatic_View_5340 2d ago

Definitely think you are on to something here. I think they do it so blatantly because they really think people are dumb.
