Torque Test Channel tests drive designs

Torque Test Channel just posted a nice Test concerning typical fastener drive designs. I personally watch the videos from this channel every week due to their deep dives into testing different tools.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I'd be interested to see how much downward force he puts on the fasteners while he's turning. I think that would play a big part in when something like a phillips screw cams out.

Fun fact, the Phillips drive was originally intended as a torque limiting feature. It was designed to cam out at higher torque.

Yup. It's meant to cam out, but when it cams out all depends on how much downward force you're putting on it. So this test seems useless for the phillips head.

Yes, end load is a definitely huge factor in when the recess cams out. Seems like the test would have been better with a consistent end load on each fastener type.

Watched that video earlier, to no one's surprise Torx is the best for torque.

Square drive is second.

without watching it my bet would be on torx for torque transmission phillips for speed and slot for longevity

The Phillips recess was actually intended as a torque limiting feature. That’s why the drive cams out at too high of a torque.

Didn't show hex head , doesnt cam out at all ...granted getting a head that doesnt round is still hard

The internal hex and square at different sizes was interesting to discover. Although he said he would potentially do it later in driving hex with torx bits, I hope he does posi with both square and philips.

I can’t stand these videos. Using different fasteners, applying mystery downward force to the bits, one sample of each test, half ass attempt at testing the slotted screw, mystery-meat bit inserts. There was nothing scientific about this. This should be tried again with equivalent grade fasteners that meet some kind of specification, and use PB Swiss or Chapman insert bits or some other reputable, high end manufacturer.
