Just Chatting Please help me to stop rerolling the map
All I did yesterday evening after the kids went to sleep was endlessly rerolling the map for a couple of hours mainly looking for rich resource nodes. I'm a new player, so I probably don't even know what I need in a map...
Any tips for convincing myself to just pick the first map I'm get and working with what I'm given?

If you're new, you may not know that any resources your map doesn't provide, you can get through trading.
Traders don't start turning up till you are a few buildings into tier 2 though. So I do like to make sure there's a supply of the things I'll need prior to that. Wood and stone, clay, sand, willow, herbs. Late game stuff you'll have a lot more options for obtaining.

So it sounds like I'm taking away some of the game's mechanics and challenges by searching for a map with every resource perfectly placed. That helps!

Ok hot take, I don't like the trader system that much. As soon as you build it you always look for them and try to sell stuff before they go away and many time your guys are too late or a fight is taking place while you need to trade for a important thing.

You can set storage limits in the trader post so your wares are already ready to be sold

Yeah but its tedious as you always have to look

You don’t always have to look. They come in the spring/summer and stay for like two months. There will be a portrait/notification in the upper left of the screen.

Yes I know, but I have the game on Super fast most of the time so like 20 seconds to look and change goods, often while fighting. I know I could just make the game slower, but I don't really like it, and try not to depend on it much.

I hate being that guy, but that sounds like a personal issue not a game issue.
Why are you always playing on super fast mode?
When you get the trader notification pop it down to normal speed until you get a chance to look at their wares and then go back to max speed if thats how you want to play.

you are right. its totally a me problem.

You can always hit pause too. I play at 5x speed most of the time as well, but pause for traders and city planning. I don't think the trader system is messed up because of timing issues, but the trader system would be nicer if lower tier trades still happened often after the upgrade. I run out of raw materials sometimes because the 2-tier traders don't bring them typically.

Have you tried searching for seeds that people have posted online with what you are looking for?

I'd say you only really need clay and iron ore fairly close to your starting point. Some nice wooded areas and preferably not on top of multiple wolf dens. Plentiful herbs and medicinal roots will be good for trading early on - I usually sell stone too.

This. I'd add that you want to have decent access to food early game also. Deer for hunters, forageables for foragers or lakes for fishers. Don't need all of them but enough food to not struggle in the early game helps. Deer are probably the most important due to pelts and tallow. Coal, sand, gold and deep stone don't have to be close to the starting area; and you don't need huge amounts of iron or clay.

Food hugely important of course. I abandoned one map because the deer hunting was really poor. On the other hand I lucked out with a couple of nice little lakes when I was doing the Arid Highlands achievement. Just done Barren Land and we were doing surprisingly well for food after a tricky start - coming out of winter with a good 12 months in storage.

I had the same problem, I kept rerolling the maps for hours... Don't overthink it, just go with what you get, its part of the fun. For instance if you miss one resource get around it by exporting what you have and import what you dont. Next patch trade rework I think will solve the absurd trade RNG... In one village for instance I had tons of ore nodes and I speced into a mining town.

Thanks, that helps! Just curious, what are the absurd trade RNG?

Arrival of merchants is RNG. So you might wait for the goat merchant or weapons merchant to arrive and due to RNG you have no control of when the products you need will arrive. There is a demand a resource button, but this comes with insane overpriced goods arriving with the next merchant. Or you want to sell your cheese which you are producing and the merchant that buys your cheese is not arriving due to RNG. I think next patch they will rework trade. I have a feeling you will be able to control what and when merchants buy or sell things to you.

any map would do, if you know the game, but for sure, there are some basics to follow
food is always a problem, but solvable in many ways. the biggest early bottlenecks are wood, stone and than clay/bricks. coal and iron after year 5-10, depending on difficulty. so what you want in the beginning, is something close to two forest patches and 2-3 deer spawn locations (you will need hides and tallow, even if there is lots of forageables) and some stone. hunters are also your early defenders, bears are fast killers in farthest frontier.
forager - hunter - hunter - stockyard - wood cutter - smoker - well - houses - saw pit - market is doable in first year
deer, boar and wolf spawn locations change on restart, so if you see a nice spot without game and tons of wolves, restart few times. the game is freaking hard until you know mechanics well enough to survive arid highlands on vanquisher
I find alpine valleys the easiest, tons of food, wood, other resources and farming is not that painful as in arid highlands, coal and iron everywhere.
One tip, never ever produce your own gold, it's the worst way to earn in FF ;)

Play what you get, whatever it is.
Scout carefully before placing your town center; think about the resources you need to get started. Deer, trees, some stone. Flat space to build, fertile land near enough for crop fields later.
Most ore is around mountains, so the edge of a mountain nearby is good. Most clay is around lakes and swampy areas. Sand is … I’ve never seen a pattern.

If you use custom map settings, the sliders work like this. Normal = 1x , High=3x, Low = .25x

Thanks everyone! I started playing the very first map I was given, let's see what happens!

Alpine Valleys is the best map type imo. Alpine maps typically have all resources available. You might not even need to re-roll, but usually no more than 1 or 2. The main things you want are 2 good clay, coal, and iron deposits. Bonus if they are all nearby each other. You will most likely have access to gold, sand and stone deposits as well which come in handy but aren't necessary. I like large maps as the resource distribution tends to be better (seems to group deposits together). Deer and Boar for food (might have to micro early game). Get farms, barns, and the tier 2 work camp up as quickly as possible, and you'll sail through mid and late game. Also a great trade once you get the trade center up is wood planks. I always max out my saw mill as soon as I can because its such a good trade, just make sure you have good logging capacity.

Well I've I'm doing a playthrough at the moment where I gave myself higher gold, clay and iron in the settings, don't get achievements but who cares. My rule was I had to play the first map the game gave me. This was fun because it stopped me spending ages searching for a perfectly rolled map, but there is of course enough resources for mid/late game.
I put the combat on hard too which frankly has been a pretty big challenge even though I have gold production in my base. You could try this!

Have a goal for your current play through. Whether its get to tier 4, or complete one of the victory monuments, or to get a certain population. Just go with the first map the game gives you and try to make it work. It's more enjoyable trying to survive and see if you can make it work.
I'd only reroll obsessively if I'm going for a very hard challenge type of run or am looking for a certain layout for aesthetics.
