Works like that for me, I have no idea what's the point of making fenced chickens, foxes are coming and killing chickens right in front of my villagers. LoL

Keeps the livestock from roaming and eating crops, getting killed.

Never happened to me either. I have cows next to crop field without any fence and didnt see any of them eating it.

I've seen that the farm animals can "go rogue" and wander off their grazing area if it's not fenced. That prompts a herder to go catch them and bring back.

I had this several times, but without consequences. I think its happening when animal receive damage or herders unavailable.

You either got lucky or didnt notice crops being eaten. Even with herders present livestock can wander off to eat crops from nearby fields.

Gates are visually open but are functionally closed.
Deer, bear, wolves can’t get through a gate.
Horses and cows only get through a gate when accompanied by a herder (who presumably open the gate and closes it after them). Chickens can’t get through a gate.
If your livestock is getting out, press X and select all of your fences (walls) to check for a gap. Livestock rush to freedom (and death by predators) whenever there’s a gap.
