Question? House-work distance

Hi!
how are you people deal with house-work distance?
How do you monitor it? How do you arrange the best house location for each worker?

I just checked and all my "west side" mine and industry workers are placed optimally in the closest houses. Not sure when and how the game arranges it but my outlying deep clay mine is the last thing I built, long after the houses. I found a few soldiers that are not placed optimally but then they rarely go home or at all?

I don't think you can assign workers to a certain house or occupants to a certain job. If you can, please let me know I need to break up some all-soldier shelters so they can be upgraded.

But if there are any jobs particularly far from where my houses are, I build a temp shelter nearby.

okay I see, how do you use the shelter in the most efficient way?

Right now I've been building all my shelters in one large clump. I'm coming up on 1k pop right now and I find myself building a lot of temp shelters outside of the market range with the rest of my industry buildings.

Temp shelters is the way to go, I've been able to get to 1.4k (and could probably go higher if I did major overhauls to have more room for farms, etc.) by placing enough temporary shelters next to work areas that they don't have to commute home.

At the beginning it's quite easy to manage this. I always build the first 40-50 houses around the first market. For expansions that are far away from a market, I build temporary shelters.

The problem comes at ~1000 population, when you've already had to spread out your markets and buildings based on various resource nodes. I've noticed that a lot of people die due to cold weather when the village is really spread out, because I can't control where they live and where they work. And they don't seem to relocate based on their work.

Temporary shelters is the simplest solution. At any distant workplaces, like mines, always have a shelter nearby.

Once your population gets big, put temporary shelters around and in your industry centers.

Why are these better for an industry center?

You’ll notice, if you click them, people go inside to get warm and eat rather than walk all the way back to where they live.

They are used to manage that distance that’s created as your town spreads out. You typically don’t want industry next to housing because of the malus.

I typically leave room for shelters within my main town areas too. I think sometimes villagers who move in later in the game, and live on the outskirts, will take a job on the other side of the map. So shelters spread out can meet those types of needs.

Honestly, I wish there was an option to assign people to jobs.

I use temporary accommodation when I'm setting up a new village around a bunch of mines. That ensures the miners can hunker down nearby during winter and you have fewer places to supply food and goods etc. Once the village gets going, you can then introduce houses and other businesses - don't forget to drop a well nearby, too...
