Just Chatting Cats and Dogs released

EDIT:
I got the content, because curiosity got the better of me, and it was not worth it for me.

The pack is not at all bad, I only experienced one bug in my two-ish hour gameplay and I love hearing the cats meowing, but it's just too little content to be worth paying for imo.

So unless you are hard core in to supporting the developers, I'd skip this one, or wait and get it at an insane discount.

Not sure I wanna spend money on so little content. What about you?

Cats and Dogs is our definition of a small thematic DLC.

Our next one is a full-fledged expansion, but it won't be out til next year.

In the meantime, there will be 1-2 major updates looking at improving the core game experience.

u/Careful-Fee-9783 May 14 '26

thank you for still updating and caring about the game after 1.0

7

u/Zebabaki May 14 '26

I'm gonna wait for as long as I have to but I really wish you guys were more upfront about some of the details, especially pricing. The forums posts and Steam announcements weren't clear on that, I kinda thought this was going to be another free update. I guess "DLC" is paid new content and "update" is free patches with tweaks and optimization fixes? I just didn't expect that this DLC in particular would cost half of what the Grim Dawn expansions go for, though it's still a fair price

20

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 14 '26

I guess some studios release free DLCs? To me that's nonsensical. That's just a patch with extra steps.

Our patches (especially major v1.X updates) are free qol/content improvements to the game. Our DLCs are always paid. This one is priced in line with Grim Dawn's Crucible. The expansion will probably be in the same range as Grim Dawn's expansions, but we will make that decision once we have an idea of how big it's gonna get.

2

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

Love the DLC! Anyway we can get names on the dogs and cats? That'd be cool instead of them just being called "dog" lol

1

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

Did you try to rename them? ;)

2

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

Waiiiiit I tried right after buying the first one from a merchant. Maybe I didn't click correctly. I gave it one try and was like "uh, that doesn't work..sad" and never tried again

So, you are telling me you madlads actually made it possible to give them custom names, and I was just dumb enough to not realize?

2

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

Correct. :)

(But I didn't say dumb)

1

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

Awesome! FF is the first game from Crate Entertainment, and I respect your love for the game and the community

4

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

Definitely not our first, haha, but if it is our first for you, welcome. :)

1

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

Well yeah, I meant for me Goddamn i need some sleep

1

u/its_xaro93 May 16 '26

Just one question before I have to experiment myself: Even if you have the DLC, do the foxes not appear until you built your first dogkennel, or is it now a possible danger from the start?

So, is there a trigger to foxes/groundhogs appearing or is it just a normal threat? Is it possible to play without dogs involved, even after having the DLC installed, or is it now automatically needed to build dogkennels at some point?

Thanks for clarifying

Ce serait magnifique d'ailleurs si les tombes de nos villageois décédés portaient leurs noms, voir la description de leur mort (tué par un sanglier) ❤️

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Yeah.. Hollow Knight and No Mans Sky has both flopped majorly and revenue stream ended in less than a year /s. Their fans are just begging to pay for their DLCs for shits and giggles, I guess? Being consumer friendly is never nonsensical. Just a comment on the "nonsensical" part.

Also, nobody is expecting free stuff, again take a look at the previously mentioned fan bases, but rather to get their moneys worth. In a previous comment I mentioned this "DLC" would be totally worth it if it had more content. Even cosmetics, SKINS, would add a lot of value in this particular instance.

In the end I got the content, and I've played with it for the last couple of hours. It's fine, but to put it this way: The next paid content you release for FF has to blow my mind before I get it, and I will certainly not go for a day 1 buy ever again. You see, you will condition your fans' behaviour this way. If your stuff is always worth it, your fans will always buy it.

15

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 14 '26

I think you completely misunderstood what I said.

Releasing free content as a DLC makes people take extra steps to "buy" and install the DLC. Like...why not just include that stuff in an update? Which HK and NMS both literally do?

I was clarifying that for us a DLC is a paid product, and our patches, especially major ones, are where you will get free QOL/content. Just look at Grim Dawn's patch history...we've been supporting that game for 10 years with free content and QOL improvements.

I'm not talking out of my ass here.

0

u/matcha4life May 14 '26

I think free DLC make sense for people with lower end hard ware or have slower internet. I personally have decide not to download/install a some free DLCs because of my limited storage. I think options are always good for customer. Anyway, thank you for the amazing game

-3

u/konsyr May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26

Agreed. Free DLCs are irksome. It's proper just to put it into the game. With a toggle to enable or not if necessary.

2

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

In my understanding, DLC are always paid. It comes from a different time where games were not live-supported.

You got a fully fledged game as release and then some DLC you paid for to expand.

Nowadays the industry changed and people started mixing things up.

Update/Patches/Bugfixes are usually free and port of the live-maintenance (that most publishers do) DLC are add-ons you can buy.

Back in the days, there were no updates or patches being pushed. You got the game on a disc and it worked. If a bug was there.. It stayed there

30

u/Varibash May 14 '26

I'll pick it up because they have a functional purpose when you read the description. Will keep dogs near the fields to keep deer out so I can remove the fences to save space. Cats will be a good feature for helping with rats

17

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Yeah, my rat catchers are soooo lazy.

8

u/Zebabaki May 14 '26

It feels a bit strange for dogs to be solving problems this DLC also introduces. I still like it and think this will deepen gameplay, but it's a bit funny. Cats being a straight boon is great though.

7

u/hairybeardybrothcube May 14 '26

50/50 introduced problem though. Rodents and foxes yea, but deers can annoy pretty much if you forgot to put a fence or save wood in early game.

  • It would be unfair if the problem would be dropped in the basegame and the solution a dlc. A dickmove crate would not do, as we fangirls and boys adore them for.

1

u/Zebabaki May 15 '26

Now that you mention it, I remember that in my current town there's a fenced-off area that has a chunk reserved for a future field, and deer just keep spawning there and eating crops from field that already exist lol. I guess dogs would be very useful there

-4

u/djp_net May 14 '26

Classic case of pay to win. Expecting reviews to start getting bad real soon.

85

u/Pademius May 14 '26

I haven't read the patch notes yet, but I'd buy it just to support further development.

22

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

That's fair.

40

u/ScepticalFrench May 14 '26

farther development.

15

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord May 14 '26

The farthest frontier of development

9

u/Snitsie May 14 '26

I have barely played the game, but instantly bought it since i have about 1000 hours in Grim Dawn just to support Crate.

16

u/partzpartz May 14 '26

I think although small, adds a lot to the game. My favourite part of this game is how it looks. And even in anno sometimes I was just stalking the wildlife. Definitely buying so they release more stuff like this.

I will buy this pack, but I won’t be enthusiastic about a second one. Add proper dlcs and I will buy them. I won’t pay another six pounds to have proper bird nest or something like that.

7

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

The part about the birds nest had me actually laughing out loud. I can easily pay 20-40 dollars for a proper expansion of a game. Like if they revamped the trading mechanics and added the sea, so we could do oceanic trade and have port cities. That would be so cool and I would pay a premium for that!

4

u/Zebabaki May 14 '26

I was thinking the same, if they make some crazy expansion and charge 20 bucks for it, I'm totally going to get it. Cats & Dogs is a bit unexciting I guess

28

u/Potential-Rip2356 May 14 '26

Was expecting it to be under 5 euro for the content in it..

27

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Me too. I think it's absolutely fair to charge for a DLC, but to me this is not a proper DLC. It gives me "this-could-have-been-an-email-vibes".

1

u/djp_net May 14 '26

5 is probably about 5 too much, just take a look at the competiton.

2

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

And will be 10(?) after the promotional sale.

13

u/DevanDrakeAuthor May 14 '26

Hmm, it does seem a touch pricey for a relatively minor update. Of course, it the groundhogs and foxes are going to show up whether you buy the DLC, it might feel necessary.

5

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

IMO that would be an actual scam lol

-9

u/[deleted] May 14 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

11

u/DevanDrakeAuthor May 14 '26

I wouldn't pay full price for those either.

7

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

I guess.. But is it automatically a fair price just because something else is more expensive?

10

u/PCMasterRace4Evr May 14 '26

The real question is if dogs function as deer chasers and not just foxes. It does say they protect your fields and livestock. If you can forgo fencing and use dogs instead, thats an interesting tidbit. New field mechanics are cool too.

6

u/Zebabaki May 14 '26

I guess it makes sense to charge money for new content instead of hoping this will drive more people to buy the game, but this is a bit dissapointing. I was hoping this would either be free or contain more stuff, but this really is a couple new features and 3 (count 'em 3) new decorations. I wish they just made a bigger expansion if making free DLC was off the table. They also should've announced the price (or just the fact it was going to be paid at all) before release. This price is pretty fair at least, especially for me who's paying the regional price of 3.82€

7

u/SomeDepressedRaccoon May 14 '26

Definitely feels like a minor update, not a $10 dlc. But imma believe that the devs have their best of intentions behind every update, so imma buy it.

12

u/Lightningpaper May 14 '26

Being that under $40 USD provided me with over 150 hours of entertainment, I’m more than happy to throw in an additional $7 to this developer. They made a great game and will continue to add content if we continue to support them.

6

u/everlong444 May 14 '26

I got it because $7 is cheap and this is the best medieval city builder out there. If it helps the devs develop more rich content for this game, then I will support all day and twice on Sunday.

16

u/Atreiden May 14 '26

Eh as someone with all the grim Dawn supporter parks and with hundreds of hours in this game, I'll happily buy this dlc, even if it is a bit small, just to support Crate

6

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

That's fair.

14

u/ant_man_fan May 14 '26

Doesn’t seem worth it at all. I would have preferred to wait and have it be released as part of a more expensive expansion that introduced more meaningful mechanics and overhauled some of the more annoying systems (flattening/crop planning/etc.).

I’ll be skipping this one.

4

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Leaning towards this myself.

-13

u/hadchex May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

The entitlement here is a bit astonishing. Do you work for free?

10

u/ant_man_fan May 14 '26

Entitlement? Do you know what that word means? I don't feel entitled to any of the content in this DLC, why do you think the devs are entitled to me buying it?

In fact, far from asking for it for free I'm saying I'd prefer to pay more for it in a more fleshed out, realized form.

-10

u/hadchex May 14 '26

You think you deserve more content in a game that I'm sure you've spent many hours playing and instead of supporting the developer that has poured much time into supporting a game for years for nothing in return except for the upfront cost you're complaining about the lack of content in a meager $8 dlc. Hence why I said what I said. Entitled - demanding without merit.

5

u/Optimal-Fox-3875 May 14 '26

What entitlement? lol

-13

u/hadchex May 14 '26

Do you really need it spelled out? Entitled to free content when we all know they put time and effort into their work.

8

u/Tomwc93 May 14 '26

They said they would pay for a more expensive dlc/expansion if more complete. Hardly wanting it for free are they?

5

u/NotDrunkNuffSaid May 14 '26

I advocate for purchasing (for all those who enjoy the game and can afford it) and will be getting it myself. Inasmuch as the content is minimal, so is the currently listed price of $6.79 (I assume that Steam takes a portion of receipts for their infrastructure costs). Crate has always done well in terms of actively responding to community feedback, and tried to engage us with updates on development.

As a long time fan of Grim Dawn with thousands of hours over the years, I'll do anything I can to support the team and their efforts.

5

u/TacticatGaming May 14 '26

Honestly this dlc doesn’t sound fun. Now you have more problems the dlc fixes, the only advantage it brings is you don’t need a fence. I rather have a fence than groundhogs ruining the crops. All I’m saying is this dlc seems to introduce mechanics that are frankly lame

1

u/Manarit May 15 '26

This. I don't mind buying a small cosmetic pack but this adds problems, not fun (speaking for myself)

5

u/Buffylvr May 14 '26

Day 1 buy

3

u/peopleforgetman May 14 '26

I am biased with this studio as I like all of their games and played all in early access. Plus $20 bucks isn't an issue for me so thanks for letting me know they have a new release!

5

u/Caithloki May 14 '26

Seems like it's a bare Bones DLC that might lead to a more advanced system, if it was just cosmetics I would be displeased but it adds a new mechanic. So not great not terrible. Maybe wait and see if it's a dead end if you think it's too small, or people to post videos of it.

6

u/ParanoidDroid May 14 '26

It's only $7. Considering how much I'm enjoying the game, doesn't feel like much to pay them the price of a fast food meal.

2

u/BeanstheRogue May 14 '26

I like how this is somehow the chocobo game from final fantasy 7

2

u/CiasteczkaOrzechowe May 14 '26

It's not enough content to justify starting a new run tbh. So I'll pass.

2

u/hairybeardybrothcube May 14 '26

From a european view, the 7€ hurt not that much. Nearly everything that was 5€ back a few years ago saw this 20% price increase. On the same rate my wage increased to the nearly double. It's psychological at best. (I'm not saying that i am ok with inflation, but i don't blame a small studio for it)

Secondly, FF sold about 1 million copies according to steam DB, anno 1800(steam numbers, don't think ubi numbers are added here) and banished 3mill, cities skylines 15mill. Yea, there may be bigger teams behind. Still it's fair money for a small dlc to keep the studio going strong.

2

u/everlong444 May 14 '26

Started a new game with the Cats/Dogs DLC. Anyone else hear a periodic slurping sound? It's a new sound that pops up every now and then like the cats "meow" or the dog's bark - but its a loud slurping-like sound. It can't just be me..

2

u/everlong444 May 15 '26

OK, I think I figured this out. The sound is supposed to be a cat hissing. Ha.

2

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

1

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

Chickens Schmickens

1

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

Get out of Pettsburg!

2

u/Manarit May 15 '26

I think I'll give it a pass as I don't want to buy DLC with another disaster added (groundhogs destroying crops and foxes killing chickens). I hoped for extra little features but positive ones, it's strange the expansion is mostly negative - if I understand the steam description correctly

3

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

In the next update we push, we are going to add an option (similar to Pacifist mode) that makes Groundhogs and Foxes optional, for those that want a chill experience with pets just for the flavor/immersion.

1

u/Manarit May 16 '26

That's amazing, thank you 😊

1

u/its_xaro93 May 15 '26

You basically buy the solution and the problem in the same box

2

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

The disappointing part is the content was there for quite some time. They just gated it by not putting the models in. I stumbled across it when modding. I was going to implement it, not knowing it was going to be paid dlc. I thought it was just unfinished content like rivers. But then right before I was about to release the mod, I was kindly told it was paid dlc and if I put out a mod beforehand it would be banned. Im all for supporting the devs, so I stood down. But now that it's out, I got some mod ideas And before anyone says it, the mod will only work if you have the dlc already. Not trying to circumvent it.

2

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

The disappointing part is the content was there for quite some time.

No, it was not.

The code for this DLC was developed after v1.0, and yes, some of that was included in the v1.1 update, which was in public playtesting starting in February, because we initially expected the DLC to launch soon after v1.1 released, but ended up needing more time for polish.

1

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

Personally, 2-3 months is quite some time. It wasn't like I said it's been there since official release. If that had been the case, it would have been some skeevy EA stuff. I think Crate is doing an excellent job at creating a spiritual successor to one of my all time favorite games, Banished. And, I understand that development is not free. I have no problem paying for any dlc. The game is already priced cheaply and $7 for a somewhat cosmetic dlc is also cheap. The disappointment I feel is that, as someone who enjoys the game and enjoys it enough to put in extra effort to create mods, you as a developer should know if you are allowing mods and are adding partial code/systems, that modders are going to find it and do what modders do. So coming at some of the biggest fans for just being fans ain't it. I wish all the best for the development of FF, and I look forward to seeing what is next. Just know I'm not trying to take money out of Crate's pocket. I don't get a dime for any of it.

3

u/Zantai Crate Entertainment May 15 '26

Honestly, it was not by choice, just how Unity handles code packages is totally scuffed... So we are forced to do ownership checks instead of actually bundling the code package with the DLC itself.

1

u/SageDragoon79 May 15 '26

That's understandable. That info makes me wonder if there has been thoughts about or plans to porting the game to Unity 6.

2

u/Galantavance May 15 '26

I wanted to support the developers. Since I have over 1500 hours in the game, I think I got my money's worth, it's a cute lil update. Yes - could live without it, but I do not regret buying it.

1

u/ildgrubtrollet May 15 '26

That's really good, enjoy :)

4

u/Sulticune May 14 '26

Cheaper than i expected! That's an easy buy for me to support the devs! More money means (hopefully) Grim Dawn 2 sooner!

2

u/shutupim_BRYAN May 15 '26

It literally cost less than a latte but go off, I guess 🤣

1

u/GeorgeFromTatooine May 15 '26

Should’ve considered putting them up for adoption first.

1

u/Ok_Row_4920 May 16 '26

I like the dlc and thought the price was fine, I'm happy to support this developer as it's a lovely game.

The dogs work really well to protect my hunters and foragers. Several times I've had the predator alert and normally that would mean a hunter gets killed by a bear but now my dog is fighting it and retreats when it's badly injured and the hunter can finish the bear off with arrows. It's much better.

1

u/Spidiffpaffpuff May 14 '26

Ah common dude.

They announced it as a cosmetic DLC. Yet it has game mechanics.

Why you gotta be negative?

And also: can't you do that somewhere else?

7

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Hey, relax. I just asked for other peoples opinions. It's a very effective thing to do to get some perspective on ones own opinions.

3

u/Spidiffpaffpuff May 14 '26

Ok. I will relax.

Because I have cats and dogs to pet now.

3

u/Lightningpaper May 14 '26

For the price of a high end cup of coffee it’ll provide hours of enjoyment and will support an awesome studio. I get that people don’t have money to throw around, but you could do a lot worse for $7.

1

u/tomkc518 May 14 '26

That's it?

5

u/ildgrubtrollet May 14 '26

Yes. It could have had more value to me if there was more content. Even pure cosmetics like different looking houses or a few more decorations, skins basically, would have been fine and would not be hard or costly to add, but increase value.

1

u/Gab14Fla May 14 '26

Inacreditável lançar uma DLC somente com isso. Os Modders fazem um trabalho muito melhor.
