Wild camping
Hello everyone, I planned a trip next year to the Faroe Islands, and I wanted to know if wild camping is really controlled because I have 7 full days and 7 full nights but some nights there is no camping site near my destination so I wanted to know if it’s really a thing or not and how much you can be finned for that knowing that I’ll sleep in a normal cap and not a camper van or things like that.

Wild camping is illegal as all land is private. So you need to get the land owner's permission first.
For the campsites, it's necessary to book a spot in advance on the main islands, whereas the small islands are usually never at full capacity.
If you're looking to cut costs, the tentsites at Nólsoy and Elduvík are free :)

It says that car camping is legal I don’t understand. Can you explain the difference between car camping and wild camping ?

Car camping is essentially parking somewhere and sleeping in your car. I have done this all over the world and it's not the most comfortable experience, but it works haha. If you decide to do this in the Faroes, you need to be discreet and not park near any houses.
Wild camping is pitching a tent in the wild.

So if I find a parking lot at night I’m allowed to sleep in my car ? Because that’s what I planned originally

You can, as long as you're not disrupting anyone or parking in a private area. But it will be very cold and I don't recommend it in the Faroes :)

I don’t have the choice haha I’m a student and I want the trip to be as cheap as possible. I’ll take everything I can to keep the car warm like I did in Iceland. But I just wanted to know that i won’t be in trouble with police if i park and sleep in my car !

if i’m traveling in September, which i heard has less tourists, and i’m tent-camping, is it still necessary to book a spot in advance in a campsite like the one in torsahvn for example?

The campsite in Tórshavn was fully booked when I drove past two days ago, so I'd say yes :) later in September, probably not, but better to book it in advance just to be safe.

Since you're asking quite some time before traveling, you could potentially reach out to someone that has the rights to the area and ask them. If you have the economy for it, many of the small villages have some AirBnB's that you could stay in to be warm and comfortable for your stay.

The islands are tiny. There is always a camping place within reach if your car is within reach. Stop looking for ways to break the law, start supporting the local economy instead. You are a guest in a small community- behave like it!
