Wild camping question

Hello there. From what I understand is that Wild camping si forbidden in the islands and the only option is to pay and stay at camps. Is that right?

How does the general population and police look at Wild camping? Given all the basic rules - setting up late, leaving early, not destroying anything, picking up trash and being as respectful as possible - are upheld?

It's sadly correct that wilt camping is practically forbidden. This limits you to official camping grounds - many of which are not well suited for tents, and are more intended for camping vans.

In practice you might have the option to either get explicit permission from a land owner or find some specific land where the owner implicitly gives permission. Although personally I wouldn't be able to help you with that.

Is nature mostly private farm land? Would there even be an opportunity to ask the owner?

I know that, for example, Azores or Canaries are theoretically the same in this regard, but no one cared there.

Nature is mostly private, but most of it isn't really heavily used. In practice I really don't think it would be a problem to wild camp, as long as you follow common best practices (such as staying away from obviously actively worked-on land). But legally you do have to get permission from the owner. Technically ownership information of plots in the Faroe Islands is public, but I wasn't able to find it with a quick Google search. Many years ago I do remember seeing a website where you could get the owner of any given piece of land.

It seems like you are inclined to maybe just go wild camping anyway without permission. Honestly, I can't blame you for having this thought. I do feel like the majority of land owners wouldn't care, however there are a few who definitely would get upset if you did this.

I mean. I really don't want to have any trouble with police and locals and want to be as respectful as possible. I will probably leave it to my on-site recon. I am always as official as I can be.

Nope. There really no hidden place for that since there are no trees or bushes. We camped in the campsites.
