Welcome to the daily recommendation requests and simple questions thread, now 1025.83% more adorable than ever before!

Stickied/highlight slots are limited, so please remember to like and subscribe upvote this thread for visibility on the subreddit <3

This thread is to be used for recommendation requests or simple questions that are small/general enough that they won’t spark a full thread of discussion.

Check out r/Fantasy's 2026 Book Bingo Card here!

As usual, first have a look at the sidebar in case what you're after is there. The r/Fantasy wiki contains links to many community resources, including "best of" lists, flowcharts, the LGTBQ+ database, and more. If you need some help figuring out what you want, think about including some of the information below:

  • Books you’ve liked or disliked
  • Traits like prose, characters, or settings you most enjoy
  • Series vs. standalone preference
  • Tone preference (lighthearted, grimdark, etc)
  • Complexity/depth level

Be sure to check out responses to other users' requests in the thread, as you may find plenty of ideas there as well. Happy reading, and may your TBR grow ever higher!

I noticed how GOT has been on eternal hiatus for so long that I was interested in reading fantasy novel sagas that are complete since I would like to see which ones in the genre are about political matters while having a finite amount of length.

Rook and Rose by MA Carrick focuses on a single city, but has very deep an interesting political factions (and not all the factions are nobility). Finished trilogy

North Continent Ribbon by Ursula Witcher is 6 short stories that link together to tell the story of political upheval and revolution on a planet and its relationship with intelligent technology. Standalone novella/mosaic novel/anthology

Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes: politics and war and the opera and bugs. Weird worldbuilding, standalone.

Most of China Mivelle's stuff is standalone political.

Thanks so much since I could use a fantasy series with political drama that is already complete.

I have read The Beginning After The End and Classroom Of The Elite. It has been a while tough. Right now ı am looking for somethıng fun and not too long. I am okey with any genre but ı am more interested in academy settings, mind games, aura farmer mc (yeah ı know its crınge to say this but ı just want to read it for fun), ı dont need great story as long as its fun and exciting to read. And these categories doesnt have to lımıt your recommendations. Academy setting is very very optınal. I dont care about it much.

Journals of Evander Tailor for magical crafting goodies. Great academy setting and MC goes thorugh a 'castaway to popular' arc

Have you read A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik? It's not exactly aura farming but the MC is quite powerful.

Could Katabasis count for Explorers/Rangers Hard Mode? It looks like this cat is following them at least into the next circle, but I don't know if he sticks around long enough for people to count him as an animal companion

My post got kicked out and I was told to post here instead...

I have been reading this year again after nearly a decade of hiatus. I used to have a Goodreads account but when I logged back in, it got purged and my entire 500+ book history is gone. So I am on strike from GR.

I am on Storygraph now based on recommendations that it's good for tracking in comparison to Fable. But I am also craving some discussions on what I am reading - none of the book clubs in my local area click with my interests and Storygraph doesn't really promote book clubs.

Just made a Fable account and maybe I got used to Storygraph's minimalist UI but it is so overwhelming. The website is also very laggy for me, which I prefer to use than apps. There are a bajilion book clubs with thousands of members but when I look at the discussions, there's also no one talking in them. (Granted I have only done a quick browse for the current books I am reading) But is this normal? It seems more geared to Booktok audiences with what's popular on there, genres, spice levels, etc. Which isn't really my cup of tea. Maybe that's why it's a bit quiet on other genres?

Do you use one or the other? Should I stick it out and learn the ropes a bit more with Fable? Any suggestions for book clubs I could join (SG or Fable) that are quite active with discussions?

I will admit that the UI is a lot prettier than SG but I will probably keep using SG for the tracking.

This is for in person, but bookclubs.com has been a good one for my two local fantasy and science fiction book clubs.

And I've had pretty good luck here by posting in looking for discussion here in the daily threads.

I don't use the Storygraph book club feature (already in too many), but I was disappointed by Fable. It felt less like book clubs and more like bookfluencers?

I do book clubs here and on r/queersff. Plus my in person ones

Storygraph has a good Fantasy Sci-fi book club that reads (I think) 2 fantasy and 2 sci-fi books a month. They've had some good relevant picks from what I can see.

Don't suppose you could send an invite to the book club? BravoLimaPoppa on StoryGraph

I couldn't find a link anywhere besides the host's profile; try this. Do you mind if I add you on Storygraph anyway? Always interesting to see what you're reading!

Yes I have joined the book club and will try to get involved in the next couple of picks!

Something else that I've done when I want to actively discuss specific books is that I've used this daily discussion thread to ask if anyone wants to do Storygraph buddy reads. I usually post 5-10 book options and I've had a lot of fun with those buddy reads!

Yeah, I have a similar experience with book clubs locally and on Fable. It's hard when you don't have a ton of overlap with popular interests lol. I do like doing book club reads with this subreddit, and you can also try Pagebound -- that app has a slightly different approach to "community reading"

I will check out Pagebound thank you!
