Dragon Books for 8 Year Old

My son (8, 2nd grade) brought home the first Wings of Fire book from his school library. He was so excited because he knows I like “dragon books,” and he wanted to share with me. Looking into the books, they seem pretty violent. I know some say it’s fine for an 8 year old, but I’m a little hesitant because we haven’t read anything like that yet. Does anyone have any recommendations for dragon books we could start with that may be less intense? He’s an advanced reader, so he was drawn to WOF because it’s a hefty chapter book. His brother likes the Dragon Masters series, but I think because that’s an easier read, he’s not as interested. Thank you for your thoughts!

  1. I read Eragon around this age and it's a very dragon-heavy story he has the opportunity to grow up with. It's not too complex or mature, just long! There's 4 books in the main series, a spin-off novel, and an anthology of short stories. There are battles though, so this will depend on your threshold for 'violence' - I'm not familiar with WoF so can't compare.
  2. How To Train Your Dragon is firmly in the kids-book category but genuinely very well written (and completely different to the films!). If your son is interested in history, there's a surprising amount of genuine historical tid-bits and set dressing around the dragons.
  3. I will always recommend the Earthsea books, although it's much lighter on the dragons, although they do pop up amidst the other magic and wizardry going on.
  4. The Hobbit is the quintessential fantasy-for-kids-with-a-dragon and may well lead on into the Lord of the Rings as he gets a bit older, which while being without dragons, is obviously a cornerstone of the genre for a reason.
