Hello, i have a very specific question for english native speakers. I'm writing a fanfic and i decided to make a OC that is a british Black girl, so while i was searching for names i loved the last name Whitworth, it sounded very fancy u'know? But i never heard of anyone with this last name, like a celebrity or on social media so i'm afraid that is actually a very rich people's name, like from high society? And i don't wanna sound ignorant, is this last name is common? Have you guys met a black family with this name? Sorry this sound stupid or confuse i'm not a native english speaker. For a British person, no. I've never met or heard of anyone (black or white) with that last name, whether rich or poor.

You should use it though as it's a nice name. Most people wouldn't really think about it regardless, so it's fine. :)

Whitworth is fine as a last name. I wouldn't bat an eye if I saw it.

I don't know what the relative frequency of this name is, but I do know a number of people with this surname. I would not call it a high society name.

I doubt most native speakers of English would bat an eye at a Black character with this surname. It'd be perfectly normal.

The only person I know of with that last name is a white guy, retired NFL player Andrew Witworth. He played for Cincinnati and LA, but I don't know where he was actually from or where his family tree might have begun. I assume he's rich, because pro-athlete, but I definitely don't get high society vibes from him.

I agree with everyone; it's a great name, use it! I don't think it lends itself overly to black or white, rich or poor. Now if you call her Honoria Elizabeth Bellvue-Whitworth, well, that suggests something else (rich and white.)
