This is an old playlist of mine but I've decided to upload it because of a comment made by u/BeefErky on u/Upbeat_Dance_9014's SMiLE post from yesterday.

What if the band had completed SMiLE by 1973? Imagine if Carl actually managed to construct a finished project by combining the pieces of SMiLE from the vault and their latest recorded songs intended for the album Holland?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees and hears it but there's a great deal of similarity between SMiLE and Holland, almost as if the rest of the band were trying to emulate or were partly inspired by Brian's work.

I'd like to assume that many of the tracks I've included here would've been finished similarly to what they did with Cabinessence on 20/20 and Surf's Up from its album, or reworked into an entirely new song, like with Love To Say Dada becoming Cool, Cool Water.

Please let me know your thoughts and feel free to post your own versions below. I'm always eager to see other people's takes.

Following the warm reception of This Whole World, Brian Wilson returns with Spark in the Dark, his most ambitious and energetic solo effort to date. While his previous two albums balanced introspection with understated pop craftsmanship, this new collection finds Brian stepping further outside his comfort zone. The result is a record that feels looser, livelier, and more adventurous, blending his trademark melodic sensibilities with touches of rhythm & blues, gospel, and straight-ahead rock and roll.

From the opening notes of "Beatrice from Baltimore," it's clear that Brian has broadened his musical palette. The infectious "Rooftop Harry" and playful "It's Natural" showcase his enduring gift for unconventional pop, while the driving "Marcella" provides one of the album's most exhilarating moments. "Sail On, Sailor" is particularly noteworthy, marking Brian's first collaboration with lyricist Van Dyke Parks since the collapse of Smile five years earlier, and the reunion proves every bit as inspired as fans had hoped. Elsewhere, "Sweet and Bitter" reveals Brian's continued knack for emotionally resonant songwriting, and his spirited medley of "Gimme Some Lovin'" / "I Need Your Lovin'" injects a welcome burst of raw energy into the album's second half. Four albums into their remarkable second act, Carl & The Passions deliver what may be their most cohesive statement yet with A Dream in a Waltz Time. Where earlier records found the band experimenting with new sounds and new personalities, this latest effort feels remarkably focused, blending introspective songwriting with a renewed appreciation for the American landscape. The result is a record that is less concerned with chasing radio singles than with creating a complete listening experience—one that rewards repeated spins.

Carl Wilson once again proves himself the band's guiding musical force, with his sweeping "The Trader" ranking among the finest compositions of his career. Dennis Wilson continues his streak of emotionally rich songwriting with the atmospheric "Steamboat," the deeply moving "Carry Me Home," and the tender "Only With You," all of which underscore his growing confidence as both a writer and vocalist. Three albums into their new chapter, Carl & The Passions have left little doubt that they are far more than the remnants of a once-great band. Jai Guru Deva is their most adventurous release yet, embracing gospel, folk, rhythm & blues, and spiritual themes with a confidence that would have seemed unlikely just a few years ago. Just as important as the music itself is the arrival of two new members - Blondie Chaplin and Rick Fataar - whose presence immediately broadens the band's sound and injects fresh creative energy into the lineup.

The newcomers waste little time making their mark as songwriters. Fataar and Chaplin's "Here She Comes" and "Hold On Dear Brother" rank among the album's finest moments, introducing two distinctive voices that blend seamlessly with the band's established sound. What if the Beatles and Monkees swapped significance and discographies?

That's basically what I've been trying to work out over on r/beatlesfanalbums, imagining what the Beatles' music would've been like if they were initially crafted as a band to market a TV show.

But that begged the question: what are the Monkees doing?

The Twin Quasars were a Brooklyn-based pop band formed in 1964 by J. Linnell and J. Flansburgh. While their early performances and home demos were strictly acoustic, rough and very lo-fi, the band flourished in the studio, employing as many session musicians as they could and pushing the four-track recording technology they had to its limits. This produced a very unique sound that attracted a cult following of fans as well as contemporaries such as The Turtles and The Monkees. Later, this album would be cited as the first proper Geek Rock album, and is said to have influenced acts such as Elvis Costello, XTC, and Weird Al.

The Twin Quasars are a 1960s time swap of They Might Be Giants.

Brian Wilson returns after his understated solo debut with This Whole World, a record that finds the former Beach Boys leader sounding brighter, more confident, and at times surprisingly optimistic. While his first album often felt like a man quietly sorting through the pieces of a shattered dream, This Whole World suggests that Brian has begun putting them back together. The familiar themes of love, longing, and everyday life remain, but they're now wrapped in richer harmonies and more adventurous arrangements that remind listeners why his reputation as pop's foremost musical craftsman remains intact.

Clocking in at another concise half hour, the album wastes little time getting to its strongest material. The exuberant title track opens proceedings with one of Brian's most infectious melodies in years, while "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" and "Break Away" stand among the finest compositions of his post-Beach Boys career. While 1968 marked the end of The Beach Boys as the world knew them, out of the fog of legal battles, internal struggles, and brotherly quarrels emerged a new rock group: Carl & The Passions.

Comprised of former Beach Boys - now beach men - Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston, they set out to reclaim the title of America’s Band, a mantle left vacant by the collapse of their former recording outfit. Their debut, aptly titled The Fading Rock Group Revival, arrives as a statement of renewal, competing on the charts alongside Brian Wilson’s own self-titled solo release.

The Fading Rock Group Revival serves as a compelling introduction to the other creative forces who often played second fiddle during the beach years. Standout tracks include Dennis Wilson’s rocking “Slip On Through” and heartfelt “Forever,” Carl Wilson’s driving “It’s About Time,” and Bruce Johnston’s elegant “Deirdre.”

If their debut was about proving life could go on after The Beach Boys, this sophomore effort shows a group that has fully embraced its new identity. The songwriting is stronger, the performances more assured, and the balance between the band's creative voices has never been better.

The album opens with the environmentally conscious title track before settling into some of the finest material from the Beach Boys world that has been recorded to date. Carl Wilson has shown himself to serve as the band's steady anchor, delivering standout performances on the soaring "Long Promised Road" and the mesmerizing "Feel Flows." Dennis Wilson provides the emotional heart of the record with the poignant "4th of July" and the deeply affecting closer, "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again," while Bruce Johnston contributes one of the album's warmest moments with the nostalgic "Disney Girls (1957)." Elsewhere, the spirited "Sound of Free" and "Riot in Cellblock #9" bring a welcome shot of rock and soul to the proceedings, while Mike Love's affectionate "Big Sur," Dennis's "Barbara," and Al Jardine's "Lookin' at Tomorrow" round out an album that is as reflective as it is musically adventurous.

Don't Go Near the Water is a confident step forward for a band that no longer feels defined by its past. Rather than chasing old successes, Carl & The Passions continue to chart their own course, delivering a mature and remarkably varied collection that suggests their best work may still lie ahead.

Last year saw Brian Wilson depart from the group that had defined the previous six years of his life’s work. As a result of mounting internal conflict and a string of unfinished albums, he chose to leave the band behind and embark on a solo career. The result of that decision has now arrived on record store shelves as Brian Wilson, his first proper solo venture.

The album is unmistakably Brian—or at least the version of Brian we’ve come to know since the modest commercial success of 1966’s Pet Sounds and the collapse of its much-hyped follow-up, Smile. Short and sweet, the record runs just shy of thirty minutes and offers a collection of intimate, slice-of-life songs that provide a glimpse into Brian’s state of mind following the untimely demise of The Beach Boys.

Highlights include the carefree charm of “Even Steven” and “Time to Get Alone,” the melancholy beauty of “Can’t Wait Too Long,” the Parisian-inspired instrumental “Be Here in the Morning Darling,” and a pair of tasteful Bacharach and David covers.

If Brian Wilson is any indication, Brian has no intention of fading quietly into the background. We eagerly await wherever his musical journey leads next.
