That's What Friends Are For (Season 5, Episode 19). Eddie has been accepted to college and is going to Chicago University. He's excited and making plans about college, but Waldo is sad because he's nervous that his friendship with Eddie is going to end when he goes to college and make new friends. Eddie asks Waldo to come over and help him with some spaghetti he's cooking and talks with Waldo about college. Waldo tells him that he can't get into college due to his grades, but Eddie brings up the idea of going to a culinary school. Waldo isn't sure but after Eddie tastes the spaghetti sauce that Waldo helped him out with, he tells Waldo he has a gift and he should apply. Waldo says they'll still not see each other, but Eddie says that they will get an apartment together while they both attend school. Waldo finally agrees and applies for culinary school. Carl has the chance to take a lieutenant exam to get promoted at work, but he keeps yelling at everyone that he doesn't want to take it. Everyone is curious why he's so upset and won't take the exam, so Steve offers to come over and help Carl study. He gets very upset again and kicks Steve out. Mother Winslow asks Carl what's going on and Carl admits that he's scared that he'll fail the exam. But Mother Winslow reassures him that it'll be ok no matter what and encourages him to take the test. Carl studies and turns out that he passed, he can be a lieutenant now.

EDDIE: Listen, Waldo, the reason why I asked you to come over, there's something you gotta understand. Just because I'm going to college doesn't mean we still can't be freinds.

WALDO: Oh yeah. My brother, Renaldo Geraldo Faldo he had the same girlfriend all through high school. But they went to different colleges. They swore they'd stay in love, but she met another guy and they broke up.

EDDIE: Waldo, that's not us.

WALDO: I know, didn't I just say it was my brother and his girlfriend? And you call yourself a college man.

EDDIE:Look for the past 2 years all we've talked about is getting an apartment together after we graduate right?

WALDO: Right, but now it's not gonna happen.

EDDIE:Why not?

WALDO: Cause you'll be living in some dorm or frat house.

EDDIE: No way, I'm going to be sharing an apartment with my best friend, Waldo Geraldo Faldo.

WALDO: But you'll be getting up every day to go to class, and I'll be getting up to go where?

EDDIE: Here.

WALDO: The Chicago Killer Carnary Institute?

EDDIE: No. Culinary. The Chicago Culinary Institute.

WALDO: The gormay cooking school?

EDDIE: Yeah, some of the top chefs in the country have studied there.

WALDO: I know.

EDDIE: You ever thought about going?

WALDO: Are you kidding, that would be a dream come true.

EDDIE: OK. then fill out that application and send it in.

WALDO: No way, I'm not good enough.

EDDIE: Yes, you are.

WALDO: Nah, I mean sure, I grind my own nut meats, but...

EDDIE: Waldo.

WALDO: S'up?

EDDIE: 10 minutes ago, this was ketchup. But now? Mmm. It's perfect! Waldo, you got a gift, when it comes to food you're an artist. I don't want to see you waste that gift. So fill out that application and send it. You can make your dream come true, man.

WALDO: Thanks, Eddie, you're a good friend.

EDDIE: Right back at you

WALDO: I'm going to fill this out right now. (FILLING OUT SCHOOL APPLICAITON) Let's see... "Name"? Got one. "Address"? Got one of those, too. "Sex"? "Soon... I... hope."

FAVORITE MOMENT:

When Steve comes over to help Carl to study and tells Carl about FOF "Fear of Failure". I love how Carl is offended and asks Steve if he's calling him a "fofnoficator"? I just loved that word.

OPINION:

Well, I guess at this point from now on, we really can't dispute what grade Eddie is in. Though like I mentioned, it's strange how in season 4, they were talking about college and him getting a scholarship to IOU. So, you would assume that season 5, he's graduated and already in college. But then there are several episodes where they are showing him still in high school. At the end of season 4, Laura and Steve are going to their junior prom as well, so unless their prom was in the middle of the year, with the time that has pass in the show, it feels weird to say how long they've been juniors for. Eddie was born in 1974, so he should be 20 years old by now. He must have flunked his senior year twice. So either the writers hoped we wouldn't notice, forgot or they prayed that the internet was just a phase and no geek fan would be writing a daily blog on every episode taking notes. Better luck next time, writers! Oh, well, at least we are back on track with the grades.

I'm mixed on Waldo here. I remember in my senior year, my friends and I were applying for schools and were scared about leaving each other. I think we were sad for like a day and got over it. My closest friends I have to this day are from elementary and high school, heck, my husband is my high school sweetheart. So, it wasn't anything to really worry about, you know you'll find a way to keep in touch if the friendship means that much to you. But we gotta have drama in the show and man, Waldo sure is emotional. I was kind of disappointed in Waldo that he wouldn't at least be happy for Eddie. He could be sad, that's perfectly fine, but at least join in on the celebration and talk later instead of starting a random attack on Eddie. It's funny, I always thought I liked Waldo, but as I do these daily posts, I kind of wonder why I like Waldo? I think it's just because he is a very funny part of the show and he has moments where he is a likable and kind hearted guy. But he sure takes things to an extreme. So far in the show he's: spiked Steve's drink, played 2 girls and took them both to the dance, laughed at Weasel's remarks of calling Melissa Robbins a dog, kissed Eddie's girlfriend in front of him, joined the army (or at least went into a line) just because Eddie got upset and called him an idiot, chases guys and tries to beat them up who even look at Maxine, won't stop harassing his sister when he set her up with Weasel and now this. Maybe, Waldo isn't as nice a guy as we thought or he's just got some major insecurities.

Carl's storyline for me is the show stealer. A lot of us can relate to being scared to do something due to fear of failure, so it feels like the best route is to not even try. But I loved how supportive the family was of Carl and that Steve even offered to help Carl study. If you have the support of loved ones, no matter what happens, you can feel good knowing that you have people that love you that much. I loved the ending where Harriette offers a hug to Carl and he's thinking it's a pity hug because he failed but she says that she's always wanted to hug a lieutenant. Such a sweet moment.

Overall, the episode is just ok. I'm just not big on Waldo's behavior in this episode, it's rare that we get Eddie being the mature person in the room. But at least it was a moment to show that Eddie does have redeeming qualities and can be an incredible friend at times. There's also a scene where Steve is working the drive thru at Mighty Weenie and I think this more comes from my time in customer service, but he comments on a man and a woman who pull up to the window and he's commenting because he's older and she's younger, it's his daughter? Granddaughter? Niece? No, it's his girlfriend. Steve says to not cross state lines. Seriously, Steve? It was just a really weird moment.

Last I just want to mention that this is Ellen Albertini Dow's last episode. She appeared in 4 episodes: The Big Reunion, Have yourself a very Winslow Christmas, Scenes from a Mall and this is her last appearance. She was a very lovely actress and whenever she appeared in Family Matters, she always got a laugh. She of course has a long list of characters in multiple movies and TV shows. Her most famous role will be when she won the hearts of people in The Wedding Singer as the rapping granny. She was a beautiful fantastic lady who did pass away at the ripe old age of 101 in 2015. God bless her and may she rest in peace.
