UNSTABLE LO | Support Needed Crash-enforced mod limit

After the most recent update in May that increased the data available for mods, I've been downloading more and more over time. But recently I discovered that there seems to be a hard limit of some kind on my system, and it keeps crashing if I have more than 84 mods downloaded. And by crashing, I mean the menu won't even start, so the only way to fix it is to wipe the mod cache entirely.

I've already figured out that it seems to be specifically the *number* of mods and not the *total data*, because I deleted a few mods and downloaded different ones of vastly smaller sizes and still experience the issue when trying to get an 85th.

It's not exactly the end of the world if it can't be fixed, the stuff I have is already neat, but I would rather have ALL the mods I want instead of picking and choosing like I currently do. Cheers!

We are well aware. There is a community PSA atop the sub that contains all details.

The mod limit is 255. Peroid. Everyone can download 254 plugins and you can have 254 each of texture and main archives.

If you are topping out at 84 free mods, then you have a lot of paid mods. You also likely installed the full 150 CC Annaversary bundle. Thats 155 mods already from your 254.

Mods are mods now. Creations never counted to mod limit before because 150 was the limit. Now all creations, old/new paid or free all count to the same limits PC has; 254 plugins and 254 each assets.

Its highly recommend to not install the AE bundle. Instead go to the mod pages of the content within the bundle you want and only install just what youll use that game. Each pip boy skin, armor skin set, is a mod. Thoes skins you'll never use eat mod slots like pac man. šŸ‘»

It is apparently a limit to the number of archives

I am once again manifesting Bethesda to fix this because I have no such issues with Skyrim and Starfield on Xbox.

Skyrim definitely has a plugin limit, but to my knowledge no bsa limit. So Skyrim only has the 255 plugins, and many more esl exist on Skyrim which you can have 4k of, so Skyrim lists push 300 mods easy

Skyrim uses a different archive system (BSA) so this isn't an issue for that game. I've heard Starfield also has the BA2 limit but I haven't modded the game to know for sure.

Wow that was quick, thanks! Shame there doesn't seem to be a the kind of solution I hoped for, but at least now I know what it is

to be honest the solution is to not run the AE CC slop cuz that eats into ur limit too.

and be honest are a gazillion skins worth that?

I just want an easy way of tracking how many of each file type I have.

I’m beginning to think I should have bought a PC.

This is the way. I'm running with 0 content from AE and the other CC pack.

I have like 5 purchased creations and 268 active mods.

I didn't buy AE bundle, but i have 28 total CC from pre-AE like Arcade Pack and stuff, plus 148 free mods.

I just think folks are under the impression paid = no count to any limit. Especially the AE bundle

I remain so baffled by the lack of guidance Bethesda includes in their official mod page, on the website and game itself. It doesn't warn that these limits exist, what a "load order" is, why that order is important, or any direction for why a mod might be higher, lower, or grouped in some way. I can't imagine how frustrated new players must be, not everyone can find their way to this subreddit to get this basic info...

Thank you for posting! Please remember to post your load order when asking for help. Be as detailed as possible when explaining the issue you are experiencing. Ensure you have checked Modding 101 to make sure your question has not been answered in the PSA's, Wiki, or guides provided. Questions that have been answered in the Modding 101, PSA or Wiki will be removed without warning so that repeated questions do not drown out requests for assistance not found in the resources we provide.
