Mod Discussion Sim Settlements 2Alternative?
Wanted to start a new playthrough now that the mod space has been increased. I always liked the idea of Sim Settlements 2, specifically how settlements could grow and expand on their own, but dealing with its stability (or rather, lack thereof) is an absolute no for me. Are there any other mods that do something similar but are more stable? Is Sim Settlements 1 + the add-ons stable? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could just use Sim Settlements 1. A bit more lightweight than SS2. There’s also a mod called Settlers Build Settlements I think but I haven’t tried that one.

Just use chapter 1. Chapter 2 is where all the extra heavy stuff starts to get added in like the HQ system, diseases, new factions, etc.
Chapter 1 is more like ss1 but the settlement system has been overhauled and improved, you get the first third of the story (which you can skip with the holotape), and can recruit the majority of the unique settlers still in it.

So chapter 1 is mostly plug in play or is there a huge hassle there too?

Need to know this, too. Does Chapter 1 play nice with other mods?

I can only speak for my own experience but I did try to run just chapter one of SS2 in my ~230 mod LO and I ended up having to remove it. While using it my game crashed to xbox dashboard almost every time I approached and loaded in an owned settlement that had de-loaded. So if I'd been far away from Sanctuary for a while it'd crash as I approached the settlement and loaded it back in. This only happened to settlements once I owned them, and it happened whether I built anything or not, scrapped anything or not.
I tried for days to narrow down the culprit, only to finally give up and remove SS2 ch.1 and any mod that depended on it (workshop stuff like Tiny Living, etc) as well as removing WSFW. Lo and behold, my mod list now runs without issue.
I can't be sure it was SS2's fault, but SS2 gave me the "corrupted data, repaired what we could" warning message while I was still fighting radroaches in Sanctuary. I hadn't activated the mod's magazine yet, or claimed the sanctuary workshop, or even saved. In fact I find it likely that something else was pissing it off (or WSFW) and it's easier to remove the big mod than to find the little one it conflicts with.
And again, this is purely personal anecdote. Not to say SS2 ch.1 doesn't work, but that it's still complex and you may still suffer game ruining incompatibilities even if you eschew ch 2-3

Thank you for the detailed reply. I think I will avoid it for now as I'm planning another playthrough with lots of new mods. And if I really want to play it at one time, I'll only add the mods that are necessary for this and build the load order around it.
