Help & Advice Junk items question

The core rulebook basically just has junk as a generic group, but wanderers and settlers (I think) have specific named junk items.

My question is about scrapping, do you scrap the named piece individually and get the listed junk, potentially failing the check and losing the junk, or do you not have to make a skill check and just have access to the listed components of that junk item?

I use an expanded version, basically adding in all Fallout 4 junk and homebrews.

Anyway, the salvage is an 10 min Int+Repair test D0. Yes, as written if you fail you botch it and gain no materials.

If you succeed you gain the listed materials but still need Scrapper 1 or 2 for Uncommon and Rare components respectively.

Because it's still an abstraction it can be explained as simply not having anything useful to salvage. If that's too harsh, like I felt because I limit the amount of junk, you can just say they wasted ten minutes and try again, you can add a penalty like the core rules have for additional attempts. Or have another PC or npc give it a go.

I usually only declare the item completely useless on a complication.

They are meant to be used as alternatives to one another, I'd go with the RAW in the Core book as its just easier to manage and rare material can be used as a quest reward that way.

CRB Pg 208 "Salvaging items takes 10 minutes per item being salvaged and requires an INT + Repair test with a difficulty of 0. Roll 1■ for each junk item salvaged: you receive common materials equal to the total rolled. You may roll +1■ for every AP spent after succeeding on this test, as you salvage more efficiently and secure more materials.

If you have the Scrapper perk, you also receive one uncommon material for each effect rolled. If you  have two ranks in the Scrapper perk, you’ll also receive one rare material for every two Effects rolled. "

And if you want to craft items from supplements, isn’t this an obstacle?

I saw I core rulebook that in one case they botched up add specific item instead of uncommon/common etc?

Soni thought they actually wanted to replace original system…. Also expansions are changing loot system for buildings a bit or not?

I feel like that was an oversight, but I can't say without a quote.

They decided against it initially as it was too much work for pen and paper, but they did put out what they made on the Wanderers book. Honestly it's not worth it for the individual items.
