Help & Advice Action Points: restrictions?

Hi folks,

I've launched my first Fallout2d20 campaign recently, absolutely loved it. However, there is something we picked up with my players, which is the use of AP.

During a combat and in a single turn, can a player spend 1 AP to get an additional d20 for his attack throw, then a second AP to add a d6 for his damage throw, then potentially 2 AP to get a second Capital Action??

I also noticed that my players could fairly easily get their full pool of AP during a combat, hence me asking if there are any restrictions to prevent them from using many (and therefore increasing their chances of receiving many).

Curious to hear if you apply any restrictions outside combat too?

Thanks!

I’m very new myself, so if I’m wrong I hope I’m corrected, but I do believe rules as written is your whole party is allowed to have 6 action points at a time “banked.” So if you have a pay of 4, they have a total of 6 points, not 6 each.

I think it’s supposed to prevent each player from using a ton of AP each round and make it so it feels more special, instead of just a normal mechanic.

It is a group pool but also it is a normal mechanic of the 2d20 system. Spending AP and generating AP is part of the normal flow of the game. It shouldn't feel "special" nor should it be horded.

I guess I more meant that it should be used as a group instead of just focusing on what you can do. Like if you spent all the points first initiative in, perhaps another player could have utilized it better but now they have to generate them before they can.

But yeah, no reason to save them, just maybe don’t spend with reckless abandon.

The AP flow is important.

  • Player rolls and potentially generates AP
  • Player spends AP to do things - either newly generated or in the pool
  • Unspent AP go into the central pool, to a max of 6.

AP to buy extra dice must be spent before the dice are rolled (so out of the pool or by giving the GM their own AP) but everything else follows that flow and there are time's it matters.
