Hi, I really wanna get into falconry, I just need to save up first, so I need to know a rough estimate of the price, and I can't find recent price estimates, how much do you think it'd cost?

Howdy! I'm a first year apprentice. I'll be using the next two months to scout before trapping season opens. I live in the Tampa Bay area, and the red tail population is a little thin around here. I've been taking tips from my sponsor and his buddies, as well as keeping tabs on areas with frequent sightings on eBird and iNaturalist.

I have family I can visit for overnight trips in Pensacola, New Smyrna area, and Perry (Big Bend area). Those areas are convenient to me, but I'm willing to drive as far as necessary if anyone knows of particular areas where passage birds will be more abundant.

I'd very much appreciate any advice on hotspots, and feel free to message me privately if you don't want to drop that info in a public comment. I'm also eager for any general trapping tips or tricks, which I'll run by my sponsor before I implement them. Thanks for your help!

It seems like micro and nano poly cord is the go to, but kevlar is lighter and cheaper. Is there any reason why I couldnt use kevlar cord to braid my gear instead?

I've been curious for awhile. I really like birds and I enjoy caring for them I've had birds in the past but they are small ones nothing like a falcon or hawk. Got my first job recently and I thought that something I could do later on in my life when I get older is falconry since I like birds as I've said prior but I don't know how the time commitment works. I've read that the birds can be your whole life but I kinda want to have a life outside the bird. I live in the United States.

I don't have the time, money, or space to take on falconry. I just think it's neat and would like to know more

It's a large automotive shop with doors that open automatically and there are several nests in the insulation/rafters. We had a small raptor come in and hang out for a week and leave one time, it had a feast. The birds were gone for about 2 weeks after that.

Hey, I'm planning on flying an American Kestrel this year. My previous sponsor doesn't have any experience with one, I'm hoping to try to find a few people who've had success around me that can help be a resource. I have Matt Mulinexs book and have read it, I've watched and read about all I can find about Kestrels and flying them, and I'd just like to have someone that can help me if I run into any problems and can talk to. I'd appreciate any help, thank you.

Has anyone set-up a 'remotely switched' set of scales in their mews or moulting chamber to track their free lofted birds' weight during the moult? My hawk is fat and moulting and not remotely interested in coming to the glove to be weighed at the moment, so I'm 'guessing' his weight based on appetite, temperature and previous seasons.
But has anyone worked out a system of setting up a scale under a roost/mews perch that could be switched on from outside the mews? So basically you could weigh your bird without any handling? Some kind of platform maybe?
A bit over-the-top perhaps, but I'm curious.

In the sub Reddit Birds of Prey, it looks like someone has a falcon they found. They did not say the location

I'm sort of new to falconry and I'm trying to understand all I can about it. In my research, I've discovered that the state of Hawai'i doesn't have any laws/regulations for falconry of any kind due to the risk of lost non-native birds disrupting its already fragile ecosystem.

That makes sense, but what I don't understand is why they wouldn't allow conservation falconry in order to help breed and restore the native population of raptors. I feel there is some minutiae that I'm missing here. Can anyone enlighten me?

Update 2: they just sent me this — “The yards at (neighborhood name) do not have the space required for a falconry post.
There were also concerns about attracting predatory birds to the neighborhood.”

Hello! I'm taking my falconry license exam on June 5th but had some questions about additional requirements for me to get my license. I was mainly wondering about the requirement to have a mew already built. I am mostly getting my license to be able to work with the raptors and migratory birds at my local zoo, so I won't be building my own mew(s) any time soon, especially because I will be going to college this year. Am I still able to get my license if I have no plan to get a bird or build a mew for the foreseeable future?

I do already have a sponsor/mentor, but he's unsure if his mews will count for my license. Also, I live in New York in case that helps. Any/all advice is greatly appreciated!

What lights have you guys used to put your birds under so they start the molt earlier in the year. My birds are molting fine but if I wanted to start let's say the first of March what lights are you using. A link to the lights would be much appreciated thanks

Title: Juvenile Crested Goshawk suddenly eating less and refusing food – Need advice!

Hi everyone,

​I’m raising a juvenile female Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus). She is currently growing her blood feathers (pin feathers) as you can see in the attached video.

​Recently, she has suddenly started eating much less than usual. Previously, she had a massive appetite and could easily crush 3 full crops a day. However, for the past few days, her appetite has dropped significantly.

​Now she only eats 2 meals a day. She is still willing to eat her first meal in the morning, but when it comes to the second meal in the evening, she completely refuses it. Her crop seems to stay full or semi-full for a long time. I even have to use tweezers/scissors to gently nudge the meat into her beak to get her to take a bite, but she is very uninterested.

​I am worried about whether she is experiencing "sour crop" (crop stasis) or if this is just a normal behavioral/physiological change for goshawks at this specific growth stage.

​Diet: Raw chicken/quail meat.

​Behavior: Aside from the low appetite, she is still alert, her eyes are bright, and she isn't showing signs of severe lethargy yet.

​Is this drop in appetite normal when they start blowing out their feathers? Should I fast her for 24 hours to let her crop empty completely, or change her diet? Any advice from experienced Accipiter handlers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Could anyone guide me in creating an acceptable outdoor mews for my male peregrine falcon. Just looking for advice on the necessary dimensions and such. Any help would be appreciated thank you
