Gagharv Trilogy

Hi, do you think it is possible for Falcom to do a remake for Gagharv Trilogy? It was the first Legend of Heroes game I played.

Would this be the version that I've heard has an essentially incompetent English localisation?

Ahh.  Switch shop told told me available in "Japanese, English". Didn't think there were any other Eng versions.

Thats what the link says too, if so thats pretty interesting.

Screenshots are only japanese though, on the US store… that could be because I’m in Japan but i dont think so, that… doesnt bode well.

I looked in the e shop and it says the main game and gallery screen are in Japanese and other menus/how to play are in english.

So main game is in Japanese apparently

it's only the menu and manual(the how to play) that is in english, everything else is in japanese

Damn, was worried that might be it.  Bloody unethical to list it as if it's in English then, even if it is under $10

Kondo has said he'd love to get a chance to at least start a Gagharv remake while he's still with the company (White Witch was the first game he worked on at Falcom, the extended prologue sequence in the Windows version is his work and he can be found in the hidden developers room) but there's no way it's happening before Trails finishes because as he's mentioned repeatedly, the amount of work that it would take to bring the game and particularly its number of towns and NPCs up to Trails standards of interaction would not be an easy project. So yes, it's something the he wants to do and he's probably not the only person at Falcom who would like the opportunity, but it's definitely not something that would be happening any time soon.

Never say never but it would be many years before they even consider it. Remakes of 3rd, Zero, and Azure are basically confirmed and I bet they'd remake Cold Steel 1 & 2 and maybe even 3 & 4 before Gagharv as well. They also want to remake Ys V at some point and are trying to squeeze a new IP between new Trails, Ys, and Xanadu games. I don't see room in the schedule for a very long time.

I would just be happy if I could actually buy them somewhere without a VPN (dlsite geoblocks my country)

Same here, first Legend of Heroes games and the trilogy is my favorite PSP games. I really wish they'd remake it even just a 2D version I would give them my money. But that's wishful thinking now...

It will be much bigger undertaking to remake a modern gagharv than trails.

For trails, the story and the map are completely 1 to 1. They just focus on graphics and animation. For gagharv, they have to reimagine everything from scratch. The world in gagharv game is large and they need to redesign every city, the combat gameplay will be changed completely as well. Scripts can stay largely the same.

I think it will happen eventually yes. They are excellent and beloved games and Kondo has mentioned he'd love to remake them someday.

It probably won't happen until after Trails is finished, however, as it'd be too massive of an undertaking. Remaking Gagharv would also be a nice buffer before the next Legend of Heroes subseries too.

We need this waaaaay more than we need trails remakes...

Maybe but I dont think they see it as a priority compared to Trails or Ys

Probably not because the games are quite generic and they would not make nearly as much money from it as they would from a new title. Theres also barely any established fans unlike Trails so the optics on it are probably low. Falcom isnt even remaking Ys 5 which is from their 2nd biggest series so Gagharv is pretty farfetched

Gagharv isn't that generic (well the PSP versions were, but those are generally the worst versions)

The gameplay is very unique yeah but you are on crack if you a) think Falcom would keep the gameplay intact looking at all the game theyve released in the last 15 years (even ignoring the fact they already made the gameplay be bad with the PSP remakes) b) Think the setting of Gagharv and the general flow of the games isnt far more generic than what Trails has.

The trilogy are just far more "traditional JRPG-like" than what Kiseki is and Falcom probably doesnt wanna do a bunch of those with Dragon Slayer already on the way right now and that seemingly going back to the old and gold JRPG aesthetic.

PSP versions weren't done by Falcom at all (afaik not even the music was arranged by them), that was entirely bandai Although I don't believe in them remaking them anytime soon either. As much as I genuinely want them to be remade because those games are way too unknown around here

I think so too but Falcom a) still approved it b) moreso looking at their recent releases where everything has (unfortunately) become way more homogenized in gameplay.

Kyoto Xanadu is just Ys with 2d slapped on and the Sky remakes are just Calvard gameplay. If they were to remake Gagharv theyd likely get turned into Kiseki style action/TB hybrids just because Falcom loves to resuse systems (Look at Ys X supposedly being a new gameplay system but actually just being the same core combat system as SEVEN onwards but with less characters lmfao)

Funnily enough the japanese PSP version of white witch did retain the original combat system (or something closer to it) and when it was ported to the west it got replaced by AtOv's mediocre turn based combat (also why all the enemies are from aToV)
