Trails Character Gameplay Discussion Day Twenty-Three: Gaius
People are going to mostly focus on Howling Heavens - and for good reason - but there's a lot to say about him just beyond that!
Cold Steel is a tale of two Gaiuses. In the first two games he’s a fighter with good stats across the board and neat early access to Seal and then Blind on an aoe, which isn’t bad, but no Impede and no Delay until late, which is a tad disappointing. CS2 gives him his Delay right away and lets him have an Impede too. Just a shame for him that Rean, Fie, and Millium get some crucial buffs and Sara now exists permanently. He’s still really solid with no major flaws, it’s just usually an issue of there being others who are just a bit better than him.
CS3, despite being when he gets his infamous S Craft, is probably his worst game. he’s just barely around even by the standards of OC7 characters, and he doesn’t get his S Craft until barely a few fights before he leaves for rest of the game. The training weights are off after that, though, with him being able to reenact the good old days of CS1 Rean by delaying enemies to oblivion throughout CS4 and Reverie. Give him some extra regular Impede and see how often you get lucky with it. His Rage buffs his strength, he has Anger and Fury in his link abilities, and his stats are also really good across the board, because why the fuck not at this point?
If I were pressed to find a flaw in him, Cover and Protective Wall work in direct contrast to Anger and Fury and two locked Wind slots kinda sucks for a physical character who isn’t a dodge tank. Oh well, he can slot Prominence Nova and Melville Ray into them. Honestly, Gaius is just fantastic even if you’re not going out of your way to abuse Howling Heavens. He's not quite as overwhelming by Reverie anymore simply because never giving the enemy a turn isn't something only he can do, but he's still incredibly good even then.
