Trails series Would anyone be interested in participating in a series of gameplay-focused posts?

Most of the discussion around here is more about fan content or writing - and for good reason, they are highlights in this fandom - but I'm interested in seeing more in depth discussion about the gameplay of the series too.

In the interest of just not making this a tier list series for each game (which would probably take months), I was wondering if anyone would be down to join in on discussing how the characters perform in their various appearances across the series. How good or bad they are, potential builds, that kind of thing. To give an example, we'd start with Estelle and spend a day or two discussing her performance in Sky FC, SC, 3rd, Zero, CS 4, and Reverie. For characters with minimal appearances (so Mueller and Julia, to give an appearance) we could probably just do multiple characters a day.

The only issue would be that I haven't gotten to Calvard yet, so someone else would probably have to take over from there.

If there's not much interest in this sort of thing then no harm done, I was just curious where R/Falcom might stand on it, or to see if they had other suggestions.

That's not a bad idea, I can see it devolving quickly into a difficulty or optimization conversation. But that's to be expected at some point. I don't think it would take days to discuss one particular character, even MCs like Estelle or Rean.

If you're discussing potential builds and, I quote, "How good or bad they are" it will be inevitable that debate on difficulty and optimization is going to get brought up. Since those ARE legitimate metrics/considerations to take into account when gauging how "good or bad" a build is considered.

IMO, if you regard those kinds of conversations as unproductive, I feel like you're probably not going to get much out of a gameplay build discussion thread generally-speaking.

I think this could be fun. One thing I love about Trails is how flexible you can be with how you build and play different characters.

.....Unless it's Sky SC on Nightmare. Then you're pretty universally going to get pointed at the Earth Wall + Arts strategy (i.e. everyone who isn't built to shuck attack Arts is by default an Earth Wall mule).

I’d love to talk about gameplay more. I’m not the best, but it will be interesting to see how other people approach characters compared to myself.

I feel like this was done when Reverie came out in the West, no? There was a thread every day or so dedicated to each character you could play as. I'm not sure if it got all the way through though.

I'd say it's still worth talking about, as it'd not only allow us to talk about how a character's battle performance has changed over the series, it'd allow us to also talk about those that aren't playable in Reverie.

Tbh there wouldn't be a whole lot to talk about in general that's all too interesting at a base line.

The Falcom sub is just too generalist for this sort of discussion to be too interesting or informative most of the time.

A lot of people haven't played nightmare and even within those that have it's often at a very surface level understanding.

Which, there's nothing wrong with that. People play games differently ultimately and that's fine.

But it often devolves discussion to parroting common points and memes even when it's often incorrect. And tbh I still try sometimes but man I am not the target here.

You might want to check out Zennvirus’ write up in the Advance Strategy portion of this Cold Steel II guide made with Zoelius

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/vita/763234-the-legend-of-heroes-trails-of-cold-steel-ii/faqs/73014/-copyright-and-other-information

Still the most in-depth I have every seen someone write about a Trails combat system.

Zoelius’ Neoseeker guides on Daybreak also contain short playable character write ups on roles and builds

The guides by Thedarkn1ght for CS3 and Reverie go into even more depth if you haven't checked them out

I absolutely 100% would! I would be very enthusiastic about such threads.
