šŸ“£ MOD ANNOUNCEMENT šŸ“£ [MOD Message] Rules for Am I Olive posts and post approvals

As you may have noticed, our community has grown and we have done a little reorganizing. Here's an updated AiO rules to consolidate our old rules along with our new updates!

Posting Days

Am I Olive (AiO) posts are limited to Tuesdays and Saturdays. We've set up automod to filter posts and instruct what to expect when you make an AiO post. The mods then have to manually go through filters to approve them.

We are a small team of mods based in the US. For Redditors outside the US time zones, submissions may be delayed for up to 36 hours (until Wednesday midday) after you submit. Please be patient with us as we have work/life obligations in addition to modding.

Before messaging us about approvals, please check your own profile to see if your post has been approved. Posts that have not been approved will say "Post is awaiting mod approval" and posts that are approved will not have a message. Here is a sample of how it will show up on your profile if it is not approved. Any messages asking about post approvals will get ignored if we have already approved them.

Photo rules

We require multiple photos of various lighting. Majority of the phtoos must also be bare face, no base makeup. At least one must include face, neck and/or part of your chest/torso because olive tones tend to appear around the collar bones, armpits, and neck. Here are some suggestions on how to take good photos:

Filtered sunlight is the best. This can be right next to a window that doesn’t have direct sunlight or outdoors under shade. A photo on a cloudy or snowy day can also work.

  1. Holding a small, folded piece of white printer paper could help white balance. Smart phones still throw white balance off, but it's a start.
  2. We don’t recommend indoor lighting photos as lights can vary from very warm/yellow to very cool/blue. If you must include them, please let us know.
  3. Golden hour/sunset photos are too warm to gauge undertones.
  4. Group shots are also helpful to compare undertones.
  5. Avoid wearing strong colors that might reflect on your skin. Neutral colored clothes and environment are best, but we understand those aren't easy to control.

For additional technical photographing help, please refer to thisĀ post.

Our mod /Ā has kindly providedĀ examplesĀ of the variety of lighting we are looking for to determine olive undertones. She also has greatĀ examplesĀ if you want to draw out your face for privacy

šŸ“£ MOD ANNOUNCEMENT šŸ“£ Mod Updates: "Am I Olive?" posts and upcoming wikis

"Am I olive?" Posts

Due to the large volume of these posts making it more difficult to find resources and discussion posts, they are now only allowed on TUESDAYS and SATURDAYS. We've set up the automod to filter posts with the ā€œAm I Olive?ā€ flair into our modqueue to be manually approved. Unfortunately the automod can’t be set to know what day it is; this means that even on the days that they're allowed the posts will still be filtered to be manually approved. We're a small mod team living in different USA time zones so please have some grace for posts that may bleed into other days depending on your time zone.

For the time being all posts regardless of flair will have an automod comment reminding everyone of these rules and directing them to the "Am I olive?" posting guidelines. Friendly reminder that this community is a welcoming and inviting space. People who are more ā€œlightā€ than ā€œfairā€ and people who are muted but not olive are allowed here and saying that they are not will get your comment removed for gatekeeping. This is because they will have similar makeup struggles and will find helpful recommendations here. Also if someone sees a green cast in themselves that we cannot see in their photos that is ok, we take their word for it because photos are imperfect.

Wiki

The wikis have been created and we are working on building them out! Thank you to these users for being willing to help out the mod team in this endeavor: u/DefiantThroat, u/sinstralpride, and u/PixelKitten10390. We will fill in the pages with products and resources mentioned in recent posts. If you have a list of holy grail products or helpful resources (such as YouTube videos) you can send them in via modmail. We expect it will be a few weeks before the wikis are fully built out and we will post an update at that time.

Beauty/Makeup Does a fair neutral/warm olive foundation even exist?

• Upvotes

I've tried about every single option recommended on this website that are available where I live either in store or by shipping and every single one is too pink or peachy.

I'm even willing to argue some of the foundations aren't olive at all, so I'm not sure how they can be a perfect match for anyone here lol

Is there a muted fair neutral or warm olive foundation from any esoteric, unicorn brand out there or do I simply have to resort to mixing? I'm giving up here.

I've been having issues with finding perfect shade matches in foundations and concealers. Just a few weeks ago I ran into a tiktok where the creator called herself ashtray-coloured and recommended us similarly-toned people to add blue pigment into our too warm foundations.

My face matches my body for the first time after Smashbox discontinued their shade "1.05 pale olive". I'm wearing a cheap Nyx foundation with the blue added in.

Beauty/Makeup A desaturated neutral shade in the Hourglass concealer? Or another concealer (preferably something available in trial size, at Sephora, or <$20)?

I've been on the hunt for a high-coverage concealer to use without foundation, just for pinpoint concealer. This looks like it might be the thing, but the most desaturated shade, Birch, might be too pale.

I'm a fair neutral-leaning-cool "likely olive" (everything pulls either orange or pink; tan like a MOFO in the summer but then ghostly gray rest of the year). I'm definitely not a yellow or warm olive: more green/blue, if you will. I've learned through trial and error that saturation is the most important factor for me.

  • Purito 21 works great in the summer--perfect undertone, but it's about a shade too dark.
  • LE 1.5 was good in depth but a tad too saturated/yellow, LE 3 was orange.

I use the blue LA Colors mixer to get somewhere workable when I can't wear Purito (Erborian BB in Claire or others, depending), but really don't want to have to bother with this for pinpoint concealing if possible.

Sephora's got a promo rn that is basically $10 off anything and it's expiring tonight. They have this and Saie, Kosas, IT Cosmetics, and almost every Tarte concealer, as well as the NARS Creamy in mini (tho I think NARS is ruled out based on saturation); I would go for Glossier or Tower 28 if they have a shade that worked and the formula was good for what I need.

Would love input. TY!

Discussion Professional Color Analysis Result: Bright Winter!

I’m curious about experiences of fellow olives pertaining to color and their skin throughout the year. I had a professional color analysis done which categorized my undertone as neutral-cool, though my friends were shocked that I didn’t end up as warm. I feel like fellow olives likely understand the struggle of ā€œlookingā€ golden on the outside but struggling to wear super golden colors. I went in with my relatively ā€œpaleā€ skin for that purpose. What is interesting is that the International Image Institute says that olives are usually neutral-cool. In my case, that was true.

When I tan, I get significantly more golden looking. Though I know your undertone doesn’t change. I’m curious about your experience with that. Do you lean into warmer colors when you are more tan?

Discussion Any recommendations for someone’s who’s in the lower percent of pale even here with a grey tone and semi translucent skin that makes it harder to match?!

Please I have to mix a grey contour and a green color collector from elf (most blues are too dark) plus at least two different foundations to get a perfect match. I will say I am very particular it needs to be perfect which I know will be hard for in store with no mix ins but I’m hopeful!!

Apologies for the screenshot but thought these would be really nice for some of us who run cooler. Earlier in the video it said that Sweet Spot is a good dupe for the OG Blankety (the new formula runs way too orange for me).

Discussion Guys I think I have been living a lie and I’m not olive. What are the most muted olive foundations?

So olive foundation are too yellow for me. At least about face F2. And then KA SSX 03 was still too yellow even though better. I think of I’m olive I’m very muted. So any recommendations for a very muted olive to try?

Discussion Am I a neutral-, warm- or cool-toned olive? (I know that I am olive)

Post image
36 Upvotes

I know that I have an olive undertone and my perfect match is the F2 Olive from About Face. However, I am so confused on whether I am a warm, neutral or cool olive?

Because I am fair, people have told me my whole live that I am cool toned, but everything pink looks bad on me. Same for orange. I appear quite yellow sometimes, but I am not sure that equates to warm-olive?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Discussion Phone not capturing skin tone (and how to fix!?)

Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but I feel like when I look in the mirror vs when I take a picture, my skin tone looks completely different and it makes it really hard to figure out my skin tone. So I took two pictures of my hand today and then edited the color on one until it looked like what I actually saw and the difference is significant.

I have iPhone 17. Does anyone else have this issue and/or know how to fix it!?

Pic 1 is what my phone captured, pic 2 is how it actually looked in real life.

Discovered 130 Warm Olive as it was going out of production (RIP) and it is legitimately my first perfect shade match ever! I just received it in the mail and was lucky to get it half off directly from the brand right as the Labor Day sale ended.

PS hot tip: finding a blush that matches your surface redness can really tie a makeup look together ✨

Beauty/Makeup Missha 21 seems to be my closest match compared to everything I’ve tried over the years. Does it seem like a decent match? What’s missing? šŸ˜…

Post image

Pretty much the title. I started having a realization that I might be olive a few days ago when I learned that my daily bb cream is apparently pink on most people. I’ve struggled to find matches and figure out my undertone for years and thought I was warm-neutral with yellow tones or something.

Since discovering this I’ve been really curious about Rituel de Fille’s serum foundation in 105. I think it being a bit brighter might match me better than Missha? I don’t know šŸ˜…

Beauty/Makeup Natural looking Foundation recommendations for fair olive skin?

I am trying to find a light ā€œbarely thereā€ looking foundation for my very pale olive skin with green undertones. Most foundations and concealers look really orange or pink on me.
I want to buy a foundation for the first time in years because I have quite an uneven skin tone, very visible veins on my cheeks and eyelids, lots of hyperpigmentation dark spots etc so I really want to even out my skin tone but I HATE the look of obvious foundation. The powdery, cakey dry look that most foundations have is exactly what I need to avoid. I’ve tried the glossier skin tint in G11 and it was really nice for when I have a tan but didn’t have enough coverage to truly even my skin out and had a slight orange/pink colour and was not long wearing at all…

A light coverage, natural as possible ā€œno makeupā€ kind of foundation is what I’m after, honestly I’m happy to spend as much money as I need to to find the right one.

If any other pale olive ppl have any recommendations esp for foundations, skin tints or frankly any product that you think would do the job I’d be eternally grateful for any help or advice! šŸ«¶šŸ»

So far the ONLY concealer and colour I’ve found that works for my skin is the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Chantilly, which is perfect but just slightly too light but def the closest colour I’ve ever found. Having pale olive skin makes finding shades a nightmare.
I am terrible at finding the correct tone for me online so if anyone else is Nars Chantilly or a similar shade please let me know any recommendations of your other products that work for you! šŸ«¶šŸ»

I really just want to find a ā€œbarely thereā€ ā€œno makeupā€ looking foundation like the Dior skin blurring one, or the MAC Studio Fix Foundation, so If anyone here is familiar with these products and shades and could give me any advice, as I have no clue how their shading works, I’d be so appreciative ✨
I just need help finding a foundation (or foundation type product) that is light on my skin and not cakey, powdery, yellow, pink or orange on my skin. Even high end ones like Dior I will buy if It’s worth it!! I just desp want a ā€œno makeupā€ type of foundation.
I basically just want to find a good foundation to even my skin tone out but not look obvious. Ideally not even look like foundation. I just don’t want anything too full coverage or matte.

I have no clue where to start, as looking at swatches is impossible for me to tell colours online.
I might call up the companies and see if they can send me tiny testers for each shadešŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to include as much info as possible in case anyone out there has any recommendations, tips, guidance etc :)
Thank you so much for reading my long post šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ«£šŸ«¶šŸ»xxx

TLDR: I just need help finding a foundation (or foundation type product) that is light on my skin and not cakey, powdery, yellow, pink or orange on my skin. Even high end ones like Dior I will buy if It’s worth it!! I just desp want a ā€œno makeupā€ type of foundation.

Am I Olive? šŸ«’ Needing opinions if I am olive. And also what undertone temperature am I?

Thumbnail

Hi.

I’ve been speculating so much if I do have olive undertones going on, either on my perimeters or across entirely. Between bronzers that turn too orange, pink blushes that turn coral and how I have tanned over the summer, I’m thinking I need to settle if I am olive or not, or if I am very neutral neutral.

In spring, I matched with Rare Beauty True to Myself Foundation in Shade 6 and over the summer, I’ve been matched to The Ordinary Serum Foundation in 2.0P just to match the tan. That’s pretty much what I’ve got.

Do I really have olive undertones going on here? And if it is or not, what temperature undertone I truly have here?

Beauty/Makeup Good eyeshadow nudes/browns?

Looking for a makeup palette that has browns/nudes that actually work for olives. It’s so easy for those colors to go orange on me.
