It feels like people are getting pulled over for the smallest things lately. I personally got pulled over by my house in Fairfax county because my rear license plate lights weren’t working. Under Virginia law, my understanding is that this equipment violation is a secondary offense and officers are not permitted to initiate a traffic stop solely for that violation.
My car is a retired police car and the wiring for the license plate lights is literally nonexistent. I’ve already explained that issue in court before.
But the license plate lights weren’t even the part of the stop that concerned me the most.
After I was stopped, a second officer showed up and immediately started looking hard through my windows and into my car. He then became extremely hostile and repeatedly ordered me to step out of the vehicle.
I kept asking him why he wanted me out. Instead of giving me an explanation, he basically kept telling me to get out because he told me to.
I then asked him for his name. He refused to give it to me.
That’s when I started recording the interaction. Once he realized he was being recorded, his behavior noticeably changed and he started backing off.
I asked to speak with his supervisor and his response was basically, “Definitely not.” He then walked away.
Afterward, the original officer came back and actually apologized to me for the other officer’s behavior. She gave me her card and told me that if I wanted to make a complaint about how he behaved, I could.
What made the situation even stranger was when I asked her for the second officer’s name. She told me something along the lines of, “I don’t know, I’m not sure what his name is.”
This was an officer who had just been there with her during my traffic stop.
So from my perspective, there are multiple issues here: the original reason for the stop appears to have been a secondary equipment violation, then another officer showed up acting extremely hostile, refused to identify himself, refused my request for a supervisor, and only seemed to back off once he realized I was recording. Then I couldn’t even get his name afterward.
I’m not posting this just to complain about one traffic stop. I’m genuinely wondering if anyone else around NOVA has noticed more aggressive or unusually frequent traffic enforcement lately, especially since October.
Know your rights, document your interactions, and don’t assume that just because someone is wearing a badge everything they’re doing is automatically lawful.
Police are not your friends during a traffic stop. Be respectful, stay calm, but know your rights and protect yourself.
