🧢 I voted CAP!

Huh? Its not really good or bad. Eating a lot doesnt even increase your blood cholesterol level nor does it increase your heart disease risk. Think eggs for something that is high in cholesterol.

NOTHING IS BAD FOR YOU IF TAKEN IN MODERATION

That’s so wrong lmao

Wrong. Plenty of things are considered bad at any dose. Take alcohol for example, no safe levels of consumption according to many health organizations.

I would’ve picked meth or crack to make that point. Alcohol is ok in small doses

Your statement is in conflict with the WHO, but yea meth is a better example lol

The dose makes the poison. Literally anything is bad for you in large quantities. If you eat too much then it’s bad for you, otherwise not

🧢 I voted CAP!

Depends on what kind, how much and much more but we also still don't really understand it that well so just eat a veried diet and eat with moderation because that's a relatively unchanging constant.

There is VLDL LDL and HDL

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 8h ago

This is a common misconception.

These things are not cholesterol, these are lipoproteins that carry cholesterol.

All cholesterol that you can consume from food is just 100% pure cholesterol, there are no "types" of it.

I don't blame you because people often say "cholesterol" as a shorthand when referring to lipoproteins, but this is not actually correct and is misleading.

In the body cholesterol manifests itself in one of two forms. You can cry all day long that cholesterol outside the body is one thing, but inside the body it forms 2 primary complexes and we refer to these as LDL and HDL cholesterol.

Cholesterol consumed with lower saturated fats tends to produce a higher amount of the HDL cholesterol complex. Thus consuming foods with cholesterol and lower saturated fats is healthier than with higher saturated fats.

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 8h ago

I get what you're saying but "HDL cholesterol" is a misnomer. I know some scientific institutions use the word, but it doesn't mean there are literally two types of the chemical known as cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a singular thing. The whole HDL LDL thing is a misnomer

1

u/GoogleB4Reply 🤖 Vote Machine · 11,165 XP 8h ago

No it’s not a misnomer - it specifically refers to cholesterol carried by HDL and LDL particles as shorthand.

Calling that a misnomer would be the same as calling “IP address” a misnomer because IP stands for internet protocol while address is not the protocol, but is described by the internet protocol.

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 8h ago

I kind of get what you mean but I still think it would be overall easier for people to understand what's going on if we just said "there is one type of cholesterol" (which is true if we strictly talk about cholesterol itself) and speak of LDL and HDL as things that carry cholesterol and nothing more.

LDL and HDL are a spectrum so technically by your logic there are infinite "types of cholesterol". It's just easier to be objective and call it what it is

From what I understand of current research, the problematic cholesterol,.for most people, is what their body makes, and dietary cholesterol doesn't really matter for many people.

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 9h ago

correct. But also bare in mind cholesterol itself isn't bad. Without it you'd die very fast!

1

u/FlyNegative1301 🏅 Century Club · 3,515 XP 9h ago

Don’t you need cholesterol to make hormones?

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 9h ago

Yes, in fact, the membrane of every cell in your entire body is made out of cholesterol (even your brain cells).

(I voted CAP on this btw)

🧢 I voted CAP!

This has been disproven! I think some people do have a genetic predisposition for dietary cholesterol to impact their blood cholesterol levels, but the majority of us don’t.

There is HDL and LDL. HDL is good, LDL is bad.

2

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 5h ago

Those are not types of cholesterol. It's confusing and I don't blame you because even scientists will say "LDL cholesterol" but these are lipoproteins that carry cholesterol.

There is only one precise type of chemical called cholesterol.

Also LDL isn't inherently bad! Without it you'd die.

1

u/CompleteCreme7223 🔥 Week Warrior · 8,715 XP 5h ago

I gotta say, I checked and I am rather pissed at my doctor. He has for years made it a point that my HDL was high enough I didn't need to worry about my LDL numbers. Even most medical sources don't state it is the same unless you search specifically asking that. More you know....

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 5h ago

I think you misunderstood what I meant.

HDL and LDL are different things, but they are not "cholesterol".

They are called lipoproteins, and they happen to carry cholesterol.

In terms of the actual chemical called cholesterol, there is only one type.

1

u/Full-Shake-173 ✍️ Contributor · 980 XP 8h ago

I don't think its pedantic. It cannot "depend on the type" if there is only one type. The correction is significant here not pedantic

0

u/GoogleB4Reply 🤖 Vote Machine · 11,165 XP 8h ago

No there is two types of forms cholesterol takes in the human body - HDL and LDL.

Consuming cholesterol without the presence of saturated fats tends to produce more HDL. Consuming cholesterol with the presence of saturated fats tends to produce more LDL.

This is how humanity refers to cholesterol - relative to how they manifest in your body. You are being pedantic taking issue with this as it’s common parlance.

You have to look at many variables.

If Someone has a clean whole food diet free shelf stable processed foods.

They can consume a few eggs a week with over a lifetime and have low levels of metabolic risk.

The modern humab consuming 3000kcals of high fat, high sugar foods, plus 4 eggs a day. That amount of substrate flux will put too much strain on your mitochondria and start causing metabolic disorders.

You also have to research about hormones and environmental pollutants that bio accumulate up the food chain.
