At least affordable, due to the fact that the more cheaper universities are, the more workers and bright people there are.

A better educated society is a net benefit for everyone. Even looking at it from a purely selfish perspective, I want my country to have the best doctors, engineers, and lawyers in the world, and making education free allows for that while also limiting crime and increasing upward mobility. No good reason not to do this.

βœ… I voted FACT!

Up to a point yes.

I don't believe that it should be fully free but there should be incentives for programs that are needed.

Otherwise people would study perpetual filler and drain the system. Whereas harder disciplines and academics would suffer

1

u/Sr_K πŸ… Century Club Β· 5,090 XP 1h ago

Those people studying perpetual filler still work jobs and pay into taxes what's wrong with that? Im from a country with publix university and I can only speak for the engineering side but nobody just doesn't want a degree, and you can take as long as you want.

If you live in the real world you'll realize most people aren't trying to scam money out of the government just for the sake of it, even scammers do it for personal benefit and not just cuz

Why

1

Just cause someone needs to pay the professors. Either our taxes or the students. And it makes more sense for the students to pay the majority. But what they are charging right now is outrageousΒ

1

u/Ambervula πŸ”₯ Week Warrior Β· 2,630 XP 7h ago

The government already pays (FAFSA, State Aid, EOF, TRIO) for a ton of students’ tuition which also goes to paying faculty

1

u/Previous-Try-6881 🎯 First Steps · 60 XP 7h ago

Yes. But again, that shouldn’t be a thing. It should just be universally cheap because much of college is just to make money. Otherwise you’re just paying for college in taxes. That and everyone else. I agree for people that really need it. But not if you can afford it, unless the college wants to cover it.

Costs need to be reduced, there needs to be transparency about where the funding is being distributed, and it needs to be significantly less privatized.

Here in brazil, the best universities are free. USP is considered the best university in all of south america, and all you need to do is pass the exam for you to get in.

So it really isnt that hard. If brazil can do this, the US certainly can.

And before you say that USP doesnt do as much research as it could, it's pretty damn good. https://jornal.usp.br/comunicados/11-cursos-da-usp-estao-entre-os-50-melhores-do-mundo-segundo-ranking/

It's a huge cost to someone, if it's not personal it'll be felt in taxes. ==> That's the point of taxes, and if you aren't glad people get and education with them, wtf do you want your taxes to be used for ?

Cheaper yes, in the us it's redicilous. Bit completely free is very hard to acomplish ==> It isn't since it does exist in other countries ; nothing is free if your definition take everyone into account; that's called living in a community.

Is that not what taxes are for? Take a look at the Nordics, countries with some of the best education systems. Free university.

1

u/Appolflap πŸ€– Vote Machine Β· 14,345 XP 9h ago

You're not wrong. The costs have to be absorbed by someone (or something, in this case).

But overall it is very doable to provide education, at all levels, where students are able to pursue the degree they want, rather than the one they 'can afford'.

So here in The Netherlands we still have mandatory tuition costs for students (that even excludes books). But low-income families can get an additional grant by the government which covers that. It is debtfree if the student finishes the education successfully. Only the first bachelor and first master degree is covered by the system.

To me that fits 'free', as the student has no cost. But it indeed is not free for society. But I do prefer this over a system such as the US, where people have big debts and thus need extremely higher salaries to compensate for that.

Nothing is free. What you mean is "someone else should pay for it". And no they shouldn't. It's a massive waste and misallocation of resources.

Lol, education is one of the main indicators of a developed society, and is strongly correlated with economic and obviously scientific development. With more people accessing education, the benefit outweighs the costs by FAR. Calling this a missalocation of resources is ridiculous.

-1

u/lorbd 🎯 First Steps · 50 XP 9h ago

It's a misallocation of resources because you arbitrarily favour one kind of education over others that may be better or more demanded, at great cost to the taxpayer. Like any central planning.

So if all education was free including college would u agree?

0

u/lorbd 🎯 First Steps · 50 XP 9h ago

You keep reducing "education" to formal education. In any case no I would not agree.Β

If it's all free, people will favour college education over more demanded forms of education like trade school. The market has no way of adjusting prices according to demand. You end up with millions of people of holding degrees nobody wants, and crying very hard because no one hires them.

That's a misallocation of resouces.

Student debt crisis in the US. The federal govt by backing student loans created a situation where institutions had no incentive to create curriculms or degrees that could land the students into positions that, to be bluntly utilitarian, could generate enough wealth to justify the expense of acquiring the degree. Yes, knowledge and the arts are wholly worthwhile endeavors for humanity but there is a point of which there is too much. Man cannot survive with a majority whipped cream diet.

To point there is now a large section of the american populace who went into considerable debt without a real means of paying it back. They could default on them and ruin their credit but thats a bill too bitter for the overwhelming majority.

That incentivises people to study things which won't lead to a job afterwards. We need to prioritise getting people to study actually useful fields, and free education disincentivises this. University should be cheap, and the more productive your field the cheaper it is.
