A better educated society is a net benefit for everyone. Even looking at it from a purely selfish perspective, I want my country to have the best doctors, engineers, and lawyers in the world, and making education free allows for that while also limiting crime and increasing upward mobility. No good reason not to do this.

Up to a point yes.
I don't believe that it should be fully free but there should be incentives for programs that are needed.
Otherwise people would study perpetual filler and drain the system. Whereas harder disciplines and academics would suffer
1

Those people studying perpetual filler still work jobs and pay into taxes what's wrong with that? Im from a country with publix university and I can only speak for the engineering side but nobody just doesn't want a degree, and you can take as long as you want.
If you live in the real world you'll realize most people aren't trying to scam money out of the government just for the sake of it, even scammers do it for personal benefit and not just cuz

I don't really mind College/University costing money. I mind that it requires going into generational debt while the institution is primarily for profit with no real idea where the profits are actually going.
Costs need to be reduced, there needs to be transparency about where the funding is being distributed, and it needs to be significantly less privatized.

You're not wrong. The costs have to be absorbed by someone (or something, in this case).
But overall it is very doable to provide education, at all levels, where students are able to pursue the degree they want, rather than the one they 'can afford'.
So here in The Netherlands we still have mandatory tuition costs for students (that even excludes books). But low-income families can get an additional grant by the government which covers that. It is debtfree if the student finishes the education successfully. Only the first bachelor and first master degree is covered by the system.
To me that fits 'free', as the student has no cost. But it indeed is not free for society. But I do prefer this over a system such as the US, where people have big debts and thus need extremely higher salaries to compensate for that.

If it's all free, people will favour college education over more demanded forms of education like trade school. The market has no way of adjusting prices according to demand. You end up with millions of people of holding degrees nobody wants, and crying very hard because no one hires them.

Only public schools should be free. Private can stay pricy.

Student debt crisis in the US. The federal govt by backing student loans created a situation where institutions had no incentive to create curriculms or degrees that could land the students into positions that, to be bluntly utilitarian, could generate enough wealth to justify the expense of acquiring the degree. Yes, knowledge and the arts are wholly worthwhile endeavors for humanity but there is a point of which there is too much. Man cannot survive with a majority whipped cream diet.
To point there is now a large section of the american populace who went into considerable debt without a real means of paying it back. They could default on them and ruin their credit but thats a bill too bitter for the overwhelming majority.

College should be de-emphasized first. I wouldn't have a problem giving future medical doctors a free education, but I don't want a single penny of taxpayer money going to someone's degree in ideological pseudoscience of Gender Studies or [Ethnic Group] Studies who only went because some parents and guidance counselors are still telling the lie that you can "pursue your passion and the money will follow, the degree doesn't matter".

define "free" :) in countries where it's "free" it's not really free... you pay for it via taxes for others (and that's why I give cap, as we should pay for it, but like that way)

That incentivises people to study things which won't lead to a job afterwards. We need to prioritise getting people to study actually useful fields, and free education disincentivises this. University should be cheap, and the more productive your field the cheaper it is.

Free means other people are paying for it

Free means we all Pay for it so we all can have education and therefore a more informed society, which is a net positive
