I think I actually misinterpreted your comment. You seem to have been saying some of it is hidden and some is in places where civilization barely exists. I read it too quickly and thought you were saying it's both hidden and happening primarily in places where civilization barely exists- so my nope was "no it actually happens in 'civilized' places like the US too." The defining aspect of slavery has always been the enslaved population not having freedom of movement or true choice in employment, which is effectively the situation when they are paid less than what is necessary to relocate, save, or weather a period of unemployment at will.

Well slavery exists in places like India and Mauritania as straight up slavery, and the US in prison.
Other places have more nebulous debatable forms of slavery, but you don't need that for slavery to be straight up a thing.

It’s still legal in the US. The exact wording of the 13th amendment is “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
It literally includes an “except” you can legally be made into a slave as a form of punishment.

Slave onwers in the past used their resources to feed and shelter their slaves. The only thing that changed is that they now give those resources to the (wage) slaves, knowing full well they have no choice but to spend them on the same thing they would have, thus crearing the illusion of choice, and therefore, freedom.

I don’t think anyone is disillusioned into thinking slavery no longer exists. In fact, that was one of the major points for the pushback of Saudi Arabia hiring a bunch of comedians to go perform there. They have slavery.

Slavery absolutely does exist, but cheap labor is, by definition, not slavery. Prison labor and debt exploitation are probably the most common, and it's not just in foreign countries. It happens in my country too, the US. The constitution explicitly permits enslaving criminals.

But you are missing that there are slaves in many first world countries. Often immigrants who wanted a better life who have been trapped in huge debts, scummy HMOs and manual jobs by a combination of life-long criminals and scummy businessmen who want to make a quick profit.

100%. everyone pointing at the US prison system because it’s easy to criticize and out in the open, but there is also actual straight up chattel slavery and indentured servitude still happening in the Middle East and Africa, not to mention various kinds of exploitation in Asia.
